The Offshore Tour Operator is a psycho-geographic GPS prototype that
guides you through the 800,000 addresses of the ICIJ's Offshore Leaks
database. The walks bring the participants to search for the physical
traces of offshore banking within the architecture of various
neighborhoods of the city of Brussels. Thus, the walks transform into a
real hunt for shell companies, trust firms, domiciliation agencies and
shadow finance offices and agents. At the end of each walk, a collective
discussion offers a platform to participants to share their experiences
and documents, in order to shape collectively an up to date image of
finance that challenges the very notion of 'offshore'.

-- Oscillation festival

The fourth edition of the Oscillation festival is dedicated to the
question what it means to address a public, and how, by changing the
site of a performance, the relationship between audience and performer
shifts. Inspired by the transitory nature of public space, many artists
are drawn to formats which resist the demands of the traditional
performer/audience dynamic. Experimental formats such as soundwalks,
itinerant performances and virtual events, allow work to move into
public spaces where it interacts with a changing and unstable
environment. A public is not necessarily a crowd, and experiments with
small scale and outside formats are proving resilient, and raising
meaningful questions about notions such as public and private,
environment and nature, aspects of introspection and connection.

Public Address System (PA), is an umbrella term for a set of
technologies that allow a person to address multiple people
simultaneously, typically via a system of microphones and speakers, such
as in a venue, train station, or supermarket. In each case, the system’s
design reflects and defines the mode of address. In the examples above,
a single speaker addresses many listeners who cannot speak back,
defining a power relationship. As systems of address are shifting
online, the model of a single speaker with multiple receivers has
increasingly fractured, producing new and often contradictory modes of
publicness. By taking the term public address as a banner for this
year’s Oscillation festival, we want to ask: what other systems of
address are possible, and what kinds of public might they speak to? By
experimenting with the system of address itself can we find other ways
of being public?

The festival will explore a number of alternative formats for sound in
public space, interpolated by concerts which try to unpick the question
of public address from within a more traditional dynamic. These
experiments are grounded in the research of historian Elena Biserna,
with whom we are developing a publication due in Autumn 2022. The
publication will serve as an epilogue to the festival’s four days of
walks, performances, talks and workshops.

[spectre] Flusser 100 ONLINE telematic dialogothon on ∏-node

Flusser 100 ONLINE telematic dialogothon
May 12, 2020, from 12PM to 12AM CEST
http://p-node.org/flusser

Please join us for a 100th birthday party dedicated to
Czechoslovakia-born thinker of communication and technology, Vilém
Flusser, with a series of presentations, videos, performances,
discussions and unlikely information streaming from noon to midnight
CEST at : http://p-node.org/flusser

For those who know Flusser’s writing, it is quite appropriate that the
measures implemented to control the current pandemic produce an
intensification of the telematic society Flusser already anticipated at
the dawn of the Internet in the late 1980’s, his insights can still help
us understand our rapidly changing condition today.

Our program is hosted and moderated by Baruch Gottlieb and Steffi
Winkler, and features many who have known and worked with Flusser, such
as Andreas Ströhl, Michael Bielicky, Marc Partouche, Gabriel Borba,
Miklos Peternak and Laszlo Beke, as well as a vibrant array of
contemporary scholars, artists, designers and transdisciplinarians, such
as Polona Tratnik, Simone Osthoff, Marc Lenot, Katerina Krtilova and
many others for whom Flusser’s thinking remains a vital resource.

We will be taking questions and other inputs,
through the chat at : http://p-node.org/flusser

There is more information here : http://p-node.org/flusser
or by email i...@flusser.club

Flusser100 is Initiated by Louis Bec & Baruch Gottlieb, produced by
Baruch Gottlieb with Steffi WInkler for Flusser.club e.V. in
collaboration with West Den Haag.

Thanks to ∏-Node and to all the participants, RYBN.org, Monai Antunes
Lefort, Benjamin Cadon, Vilem Flusser Archive Berlin, in recognition of
the founding work by Siegfried Zielinski, and dedicated to the memory of

Hosted on ∏-node within the ANTIVIRUS PROGRAM

∏-node is an experimental platform for the development of an hybrid
web/FM/DAB+ radio format. Through the interlinking of different
approaches, tools, technologies and networks a decentralized broadcast
structure is established where each of the network’s nodes serves to
both receive and transmit information. Such a structure seeks to break
with the classic one-way communication scheme, substituting it with a
horizontal peer-to-peer model.

∏-node wants to explore the many dimensions of radio – its physicality
(ether, radio waves and the electromagnetic spectrum), its spaces
(bandwidth, frequencies), its infrastructures (network of radio
receivers/emitters), its methods of production and editorial content
management (programming boards/teams, recording studios), its methods of
metadata reception (RDS/SDR), its history (free radio and pirate radio
movements), and its legislation.

Most importantly, ∏-node also wants to examine the future role and
potential of radio in a time when everything is going digital.

2017-11-14 Diskussionsfäden ~rybn
[ english ]

THE GREAT OFFSHORE

The Great Offshore is an exhibition that invites us to a journey into
the depths of the offshore industry. The exhibition gathers documents,
narratives, photographs and objects collected during several trips in
some of the most notorious tax havens: Dublin, London, Switzerland,
Liechtenstein, the Channel Islands Jersey & Guernsey, the US state of
Delaware, the Bahamas, and the Cayman Islands. The collected documents
are arranged like an encyclopedia that aims to frame the infrastructural
and systemic aspects of the tax evasion industry.

The Great Offshore is produced by Espace multimédia gantner, with the
support of DICRéAM, la Gaîté lyrique and FNAGP (Fondation Nationale des
Arts Graphiques et Plastiques).

The exhibition will be held in Espace multimedia gantner, from the 18th
of November, 2017, to the 27th January, 2018.

THE GREAT OFFSHORE

The Great Offshore (Le grand large) présente un ensemble de récits,

Hello humans

This Thursday, November 10, at 19h at the Goethe Institute in Paris, we
invite you to celebrate with us the fiftieth anniversary of the first
chatbot, Eliza, during a performance lecture BOT OR NOT?

https://www.goethe.de/ins/fr/fr/sta/par/ver.cfm?fuseaction=events.detail_id=20853400

It was 50 years ago, humans spoke for the first time with a computer in
natural language. Eliza is the ancestor of "chatbot" contemporary and
virtual assistants who invade our messaging services. With the advances
in artificial intelligence and the conversation becomes automatic, it
becomes difficult to distinguish human robots.

In continuation of research on digital identities started when Streaming
Egos project, the "Bot or not" evening brings together algorithmic and
human speakers at a round table to explore this hybridization underway.

The conference-performance borrows one of the oldest cat protocols, IRC
(Internet Relay Chat).

One evening while both entertaining and informative on the eloquence of
chatbots, artificial intelligence and the power of algorithms.

With Jeff Guess, Marie Lechner, Nicolas Maigret, RYBN Maria Roszkowska,
Gwenola Wagon, Algolit, Fleury-Fontaine, Emmanuel Guez, Vincent
Bonnefille, Eliza and others in flesh and bot.

Thu, 10.11.2016, starts 19h00
Goethe-Institut Paris

Samedi 27 août. Première journée des conférences.
*9h30 – Accueil petit-déjeuner.*

*
10h30 – Bernard Aspe.

_

МАТРЁШКА is a steganographic music release distributed as a .MKA
(Matroska) file.
Like Russian nesting dolls, the main sound file contains an hidden file
that itself again contains another file, and so on, until the very last
file,
which contains the encoding/decoding software,
specially made for the purpose of encapsulating all the data.

One can retrieve the data and reconstruct the various files by analyzing
the binary code,
and by using Appending Insertion or LSB Steganography techniques.

[spectre] Workshop on Software Defined Radio - Musichackspace - 16, 17 july 2016 - London

2016-07-11 Diskussionsfäden ~rybn
*
Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th July 2016,
11 am to 7 pm @LimeWharf*
*µFM - Hybrid analogue and digital MicroFM radio broadcast workshop for
raspberry pi
*
During the last past years, the radio world has witnessed the rise of
numerous initiatives related to the hybridization of traditional radio
means with digital standards and systems, nourishing and renewing the
classic radio-amateur practises and approaches /such as pirate satellite
brazilian radios. [1.] /But even if technical protocols such as Software
Defined Radio (SDR), streaming and p2p decentralized practices have
opened new perspectives, it is mostly the recent new political
approaches of radio, such as Kogawa’s MicroFMor the Telecomix Internet
radio initiative [3.] that have unveiled new exciting territories.
Nowadays, radio is -in its digital transformation, far from the
unidirectional relationship with the listener of the FM band. It is open
to very local broadcast and wild transmissions over large spectrum,
carrying both sounds and data, and offering to rethink its architecture
on the principles of rhizomatic and meshed networks.Following the Π-Node
experiments [4.], this workshop proposes to explore the use of RTL-SDR
antennas, primary conceived for TNT television reception [/dongle based
on the RTL2832U chipset [5.]/and subverted to the reception of various
signals from the radio spectrum from 20MHz to 2000MHz.The antenna will
be receiving waves of data messages, encoded through Minimodem [6.]. A
Raspberry Pi will be transformed in a radio transmitter, using the GPIO
4 and the PiFM software [/7.//]/Participants will use and connect those
tools and techniques, in order to create a chain of radio data relays,
and trying ultimately to subvert it by various means (radio
interferences, sound transformation, data capture and text substitution,
etc…).

*On the hybridisation of digital communication networks and analog radio
protocols
*
This talk aims to introduce a few chosen actual digital radio
infrastructures, networks and initiatives in the perspective of artistic
practices. Starting with the very beginning of the amateur radio
movements that have emerged with the radio itself, the talk will also
cross roads with the birth of offshore pirate radios, the movement of
radio libres and their connection with the minitel in Paris and Bologna,
Max Neuhaus, John Cage and the experimental uses of radio in sound arts,
optical network of data transmission in Czech Republic, the Frei Funk
movement in Germany, micronations and data heavens. The talk will end
with a presentation of various actual approaches of radio, from the
realms of miniFM to the communication networks of high-frequency trading.

[spectre] On Hypozoology, Meeting with Louis Bec - 8 December 2015, Paris

2015-12-01 Diskussionsfäden ~rybn
On Hypozoology
Meeting with Louis Bec, Zoosystemician
08 December 2015
19h00 to 21h00
Jeu de Paume, Concorde, Paris
http://www.jeudepaume.org/index.php?page=article=2515

_

In the frame of the online project "ADM XI", which proposes a taxonomic
study or a classification of trading algorithms, the Jeu de Paume and
the RYBN collective have invited Louis Bec, artist, scientist and the
only zoosystemician on earth, to discuss the fundamentals of his research.

The classification of living things by the living beings can be
considered as one of the first experiments of modeling undertaken by the
human species to make comprehensible a strangely heterogeneous world.
Taxonomy has thus gradually become an act of creation of potential,
additive, adaptive and predictive, universes, all the while attempting
to apply grids on a elusive reality in the interest of producing an
objective reading. Current scientific classifications, based on the most
recent discoveries of molecular biology and genetic engineering, have
generated virtualities that depart from original nature. In order to
explore the consequences of this virtualization within the
classification of living organisms, Louis Bec develops a virtual
Hypozoology, a weird and eccentric zoology emerging from beneath the
appearances where an exotic and unusal living organism evolves : the
Upokrinomene.

Taxonomy is, for Louis Bec and prolific means for artificial creation,
as Nelson Goodman describes it, an efficient "way of world making‚". Bec
will illustrate his talk with digital modeling, videos, classification
diagrams and schemes.

_

Louis Bec was born in Algeria in 1936. As a zoosystemician and
researcher he describes artificial life from the angle of epistemology
appealing to the methodological side of modeling, bioinformatics and
technozoosemiotics.

1988), "Elements d'épistemologie fabulatoire" (ed. by C.Langton, Santa

ABOUT PIXEL LAB | LABORATOIRE OUVERT

Within the context of la Gaité lyrique's Laboratoire Ouvert residency
program, Mal au Pixel has proposed from May 2014 to April 2015, a cycle
of open meetings, gatherings and workshops offering critical points of
view on current, emerging or future technologies. Artist and researchers
have been invited to transmit their know-how during a workshop, in areas
such as liquid data transmission low-tech systems to organic matter
based computers, celestial bodies tracking devices, Tempest based
radios, or even, cybernetic ghosts detectors.

In Parallel, Mal au Pixel and the Pixelache Network have conducted from
2013 to 2015, a cycle of international meetings and workshops. An
initiative gathering five European structures dedicated to open source
and open hardware : Pixelache (FI), Piksel (NO), Pikslaverk (IS) and
Access Space (UK). These collaborations aimed to build and feed a
database of resources and documentation on organizing festivals,
 supported, the European fund Grundtvig.

Pixel Lab has been developed as part of a larger EU Grundtvig supported
project called Open Sourcing Festivals, co-produced by five experimental
art, design and technology organizations from the Pixelache Network and
focused on open source culture. Open Sourcing Festivals is a mobile
circuit of workshops and seminars organized across Europe during
2013-2015 by Piksel (NO), Pikslaverk (IS), Mal au Pixel (FR) and
Pixelache (FI). In the process the partners have been gradually working
towards 'open-sourcing’ the knowledge embodied in their respective
workshops and festival production, in order to share it with a broader
range of users. A database of resources and documentation is under
 construction and accessible at http://opensourcingfestivals.eu

 The artistic context of Access Space;
A talk by Jake Harries, Creative Producer

At Access Space, people interested in art, design, computers, recycling,
music, electronics, photography and more meet like-minded people, share
and develop skills and work on creative, enterprising and technical
projects. Access Space runs Refab Space, a DIY FabLab, developed and
completed in 2012. With its suite of rapid prototyping tools, for
instance, a laser cutter and 3D printer, this benefits artists, business
start-ups and the community as a whole.

As well as working with artists, academics, creative technologists,
programmers, other professionals and students, 50% of the participation
in Access Space’s activities are from people in danger of exclusion and
on the margins of society, including: people with disabilities, homeless
people, ex-offenders, asylum seekers, refugees and people with mental
health issues. Through Refab Space, Access Space engages with self
starters and entrepreneurs as well. One of the strengths of Access Space
is that it brings people from different backgrounds together. We aim to
inspire people to do new creative things; we aim to make a positive
impact on people’s lives by helping them to get out of their comfort
 zone in a supportive environment.

We operate at a very low cost with a minimal carbon footprint through
our innovative model, which combines free, open source software and
 locally sourced recycled computers.

Alternative Finance Residencies by artists at Access Space 2014
A talk by Jake Harries, Creative Producer

Jake will introduce the Access Space artist residency programme, with an
emphasis on the work of the two most recent resident artists.

Artist trader Kate Rich's residency, Creative Accounting, on the
darker macro arts of economics, drew on a wild expanse of research from
the mainstream to the outlier, to map out some swathes of established
economic thought on paper for a birds eye view of the habitat. These
maps had no pretence of depicting reality, but instead laid out truths
that economists hold to be self-evident. A careful reading of the system
is essential in order to disrupt or even navigate it.
Kate Rich has run Feral Trade, a trans-parochial grocery business and
underground freight network using the art world as a transportation
resource since 2003, and is banker at the artist-run Cube Cinema in
 Bristol.
 Feral Trade (http://feraltrade.org/)

Artist yarn bomber Ruthie Ford's residency, The Crocheted Pound,
explored the subject of value in the arts and crafts as she worked on
making a series of crocheted 'coins'. Onto each coin was embroidered its
value: making time x hourly rate + materials- showing the true value of
making crochet. Over the weeks these coins stacked up to form an
installation within the space, and the value was contrasted with the
price of similar items available on the internet.
Ruthie sought to answer these questions: How do you value crochet,
knitting and 'home craft' skills? What value would you give the crochet
skills you have learnt? What skills/ goods could you offer in exchange
for these skills? Would you be willing to work in exchange for your
skills? We still need money! How can skill exchange and working for
 money work together?

#9 | MODULAR ACOUSTIC FORMANT SYSTEM

Halldór and Þráinn (say Phrainn), artists and members of Lorna
organization (Reykjavik, Iceland) are musicians who create their own
acoustic instruments with the use of digital crafting tools (laser
cutter, CNC, 3d printers ...). They are also investigating together the
filtering effects of variously shaped cavities on sound, using a modular
acoustic formant system they have developed.

For this workshop, they will test various cavities as to turn them into
sound filter digital effects, with use of the software Vowel (developed
by Paul Falstad to digitally model the human vocal tract as an acoustic
filter). http://www.falstad.com/vowel/

Workshop open to everyone, no pre-requisite.
Participants are invited to bring their laptop and any resonant object
of their choice.

#8 | LITE2SOUND
---

“LITE2SOUND is a portable sensing device that explores the hidden sounds
of light. Not a synthesizer at all, it is more like a microphone.
LITE2SOUND reveals unusual sounds by responding to rapid but invisible
changes in brightness. Beyond the ubiquitous grid hum transmitted by
lighting, there are many other sounds. Near video screens, one often
finds a clear pitched tone with variations depending on what model it is
or even reacting to changes in the visual picture on a CRT. LED
alpanumeric displays in metro rail cars create a blend of sharp singing
tones, an optical consequence of lines of code executed by microprocessors.

In technology-saturated spaces, musical chords hang in the air as
ambient sources harmonize together. Serendipity rewards the curious with
soundscapes that weren’t intended to be heard. Even nature creates
content for LITE2SOUND’s reception, if one looks in the right places.
The signal level can vary from mic level to line level depending on what
you’re observing, and how strongly the light source is modulated. You
can’t usually judge this with your eyes; some light sources appear
bright but aren’t modulated deeply. Other sources can appear dim or dark
but are strongly modulated, such as infrared remotes and LED message
signs. Other lights are bright but not modulated at all, like status
LEDs on some electronic devices, and any LED running on DC power.” (Eric
Archer)

LITE2SOUND was created by Eric Archer (http://www.ericarcher.net) and
has been redesigned by him for the purpose of this workshop. The
LITE2SOUND PX features a headphone/line out jack, a slider volume
control and automatic gain control to compensate for different levels of
ambient light. In this workshop, the participants will each build a
LITE2SOUND PX. The kit consists of a PCB and roughly 40 parts. Expected
time to build the device is 1-2 hours. Basic soldering skills are
helpful, but a quick introduction to soldering will be provided at the
start of the workshop. After the build, we explore the sounds of
different light sources, both inside and outside. Participants should
each bring a pair of headphones for this purpose. The workshop will be
hosted by Hans Kristian Senneseth and is suitable for 10-12 participants.

#7A | Presentation Case Pyhäjoki

‘Case Pyhäjoki – Artistic reflections on nuclear influence’ was a
trans-disciplinary artistic expedition, production workshop and
presentation events on the 31st of July to the 12th of August 2013, in
Pyhäjoki, North Ostrobothnia, Finland, where the sixth nuclear power
plant of Finland was planned to be built at Hanhikivi Cape in Pyhäjoki.
The aim of the project was to explore artistic perspectives on the vast
changes planned in Pyhäjoki, through the planning of a nuclear power
plant at the site, and this way of considering energy production and
consuming in the world. Artists can not only reflect upon and depict
social phenomena and socio-economical relations, but can also situate
themselves in between politics, activism and science. Can art make
changes? If so, what would be the creative tools of activism?

#7.B | Workshop DIY Geiger Counter

Learn how to make a Geiger Counter and measure the radiation caused by
nature or human activities. Artists Martin Howse and Erich Berger have
designed an easy to build Geiger Counter for Case Pyhäjoki, and have
made a Geiger Counter building manual based on this design. The manual
is available at casepyhajoki.info/casepyhajoki_geiger.zip

BIOGRAPHIES
---

Mari Keski-Korsu is an trans-disciplinary artist. She explores how
ecological and socio-economical changes manifest in people’s everyday
life. How macrocosm becomes microcosm and visa versa? Her works have a
political nature with a humorous twist. Often, the starting point of the
work is in location, a place and people’s relations to it and
collaborations with different kinds of communities and individuals.
Keski-Korsu’s practise is for example interventions, documentary,
performance, virtual worlds, photography, live visualisations and
installations as well as mixtures of all these media. She is interested
in relations in between art, activism, politics and science.

http://www.artsufartsu.net/

Erich Berger is a visual artist and trained as a communication engineer
and in philosophy. He has produced interactive art installations,

TEMPEST aura is a device for mapping the electromagnetic emanations of any
electronic device. Any transition of an electric signal between on and off,
between current and no current, will also transmit a burst of electromagnetic
energy that can be intercepted by a receiver and in this way all of our
information processing devices also leaks the information they process for
anyone to eavesdrop. TEMPEST aura takes images, much like a scanner, of an
electronic device you put on it's surface showing the aura of information and
 energy emanating from the device.

 http://wiki.ljudmila.org/Artist-in-Residence:_Bengt_Sjolen_%28en%29

Though the talk and the workshop, participants will
. discuss the tempest program, and electric /magnetic fields
. listen to tempest emanations from devices
. produce tempest emanations (e.g. arduino, eliza)
. experiment tempest attacks - eavesdropping old pc keyboards e.g.
. take pictures of tempest phenomena

Participants are invited to bring their computer and any electronic devices
 they want to scan.

[spectre] Pixel Lab #5 | ANDY BOLUS, GHOST DETECTOR

2014-10-07 Diskussionsfäden [rybn~]
Pixel Lab #5 | ANDY BOLUS, GHOST DETECTOR
---

in: Laboratoire Ouvert @ la Gaîté lyrique, Paris
*Sat. 11 Oct*, 5PM-7PM, talk/discussion
*Sun**. 12 Oct*, 2PM-6PM, workshop, 5 Euros

#5 | GHOST DETECTOR
---

For the ghost detector, a coil (like the antenna of a radio but with no
tuning magnet) is constructed using fine copper wire around a
cylindrical object of the users choice: preferably cylindrical in shape,
and preferably a charged object (one with personal meaning or of
natural origin. Examples include an animal bone, a sex toy, a
sacrificial knife, but really any cylindrical object will produce
results). The coil diameter and number of windings is variable and
experimental and will produce different results / capture different
parts of the radio and electromagnetic spectrum. Also using the
inverting or non-inverting inputs of the 386 will produce different results.

In place of the coil it is also possible to add a choke and diode (thus
the circuit becomes an amplified version of the Raudive diode), or the
play or record head from an old tape recorder. The results will vary
according to the head used, for example bigger heads out of reel to reel
machines will be more sensitive.
A volume control may be added using a potentiometer either at the input
(coil end) or output of the circuit.
The circuit may be constructed by soldering the components directly to
the LM386, or veroboard may be used.
Once the circuit is constructed (should take maximum 2 hours) you can go
on a ghost walk with your device and headphones (or a recording device
if you have one) to listen to hidden spooky sounds.

The static charge detector takes advantage of the fact that CMOS chips
are static sensitive to cause a flip-flop to switch according to the
positive or negative ions around the antenna, lighting one of the LEDs.
This can be constructed 'dead bug' style. The 3M resistor before the
antenna protects the chip against large static spikes. See schematic /
photo for construction details.

PARTS (Ghost Detector):
LM386
10 uf and 220 uf capacitors
Veroboard (optional)
Fine copper wire to make the antenna coils
9v BATTERY CONNECTORS
9v battery
3.5mm headphone socket
- An object to wrap your coil around to make the ghost detector antenna.
The small circuit and battery will also be attached to this antenna.
Headphones

PARTS (Static Detector)
CD4011
resistors 270ohm and 3Mohm
Capacitors 33pf
Diodes 1N4148
9v battery connector

OTHER STUFF:
- SOLDERING IRONS (one per person is ideal but can be shared if less)
- SOLDER (flux core, as thin as possible)
- Electrical tape (insulation tape) or gaffer tape
- glue gun
- Wire to recycle (for example old computer cables / Ethernet cable /
telephone cable)
- Cables 3'5mm mono to 1/4 jack if people want to plug their machines
into a mixer or amp and record.
- Mixer and amp

WHAT PARTICIPANTS SHOULD BRING:
a cylindrical; non-conductive object to wrap wire around to make an antenna,
preferably something personal and/or from a dead animal/person/plant.
Also headphones, and a 9v battery

Hasa-labs researches combines technological and artistic experiments.
They play with the imaginary surplus produced by the affective qualities
we tend to interpret into perceiving automatons.

Machines and technology are at the heart of Hasa-Labs artistic practice,
under the form of technological apparatuses that are at the same time
sculptures, objects, and installations - machines that are turned on
themselves, like vacuum cleaners cleaning themselves.

Such machines or devices fulfil their main function for its own sake. As
such, they oscillate between utilitarian and aesthetic demands. Besides
the aesthetics of the performative, Hasa-Labs focuses on the aesthetics
of curiosities, whose initial significance lies in their ability to
stimulate our imagination. Aided by this propensity for imagination,
which Stanislav Lem described as a “species reflex,” new types of
sense-fiction and other potential functions are generated.

#3 | Martin Howse (UK): *Earth Coding**Workshop*
-

/The shapes of the chasms themselves become verbal roots that spell
out the difference between darkness and light. Poe ends his mental maze
with the sentence -- I have graven it within the hills and my vengeance
upon the dust within the rock. A Sedimentation of the Mind. Robert
Smithson. 1966.

/Through a range of guided, experimental activities, the two day Earth
Coding workshop actively explores links between contemporary technology
and the earth, attempting to define a new form of land art and examining
the following wide-ranging questions.

How can the earth as a process be tempted to compose software?

What signals can be transduced from the earth, using equipment of the
earth, revealing hidden process and how can these signals be exposed and
converted to brute code?

Finally, how can a dark interpreter, a shadow substrate be constructed
as an experimental situation, enabling earthy instructions to recode
that same landscape?

The two day earth coding workshop embraces whole earth process in an
attempt to approach these questions through the construction of a series
of experimental situations.

Participants will learn how to:

- measure and make audible and visible Telluric currents flowing through
the earth
- construct an earth sensing glove to insert and feedback audio signals
from the earth
- build an earth antenna/radio
- measure electrical power from an earth battery
- allow worms to compose poetry
- fashion fluid logic gates in the earth

On the second day there will be a field trip to a forest location near
Paris, where we will extend the first days experiments and discuss the
implications and possibilities of earth coding.
/
/Open to all levels.

DIETER DANIELS

A short ubiquitous lecture that will recount how the Crassula ubiquiste

and will end with the suggestion of a relationship free from communication.

Welcome to the Wireless World - Simultaneity and Ubiquity in Art and
Media from the 19th to the 21st Century
With the rise of radio technology in the 19th and 20th century, the
global simultaneity of wireless becomes the paradigm of a new
temporality. The time signal represents the first global transmission
to everyone -- long before the development of the radio. Here begins the
ubiquity of wireless media pervading the public as well as the private
sphere. The Eiffel Tour plays a central role in this development - it is
from here that the first time signal as well as the first European-wide
radio program was broadcast. At the same time, artists and
writers (Delaunay, Apollinaire, Marinetti, Cendrars) celebrated the
commencement of the wireless era in their images and poems relating to
the Eiffel Tour. Today, we adopt the coordinates of space

ILLUSORY TECHNOLOGICAL EMANCIPATION

Closing of Open Laboratory residency
with /dev/art, Dorkbot Upgrade! Paris
@Gaîté Lyrique

To wrap up their Open Laboratory residency, /dev/art, Dorkbot and Upgrade!
Paris offer a conference event on social utopias carried by technologies
(Open, Innovation, Sharing, Community).

One central topic is to understand how these utopias are embedded in the heart
of industrial transformations; The goal is to analyse hybrid structures such as
art/industry/science/technology and as such, theirgo-between roles in
harnessing dynamics and outsourcing, specific to immaterial economy.

* Usinette is a fablab and a hacklab. It's not an atelier, nor a factory.
Usinette is both a group and an approach (a manifesto on the reappropriation of
tools and techniques, and the dissemination of their related knowledge).
Usinette is also an experiment (in helping to implement public-spirited
fabrication workshops).

* Johan Söderberg is a researcher at Laboratoire Techniques, Territoires et
Sociétés (LATTS) and Institut Francilien Recherche et Innovation Société
(IFRIS) at Écoles des Ponts, Paris. In his research he looks at open hardware
projects where hardware equipment is being developed in the same spirit as free
software development. He investigates what infrastructure it takes to enable
user-driven innovation of tangible products. Of particular interest to him is
how new divisions of labour are re-established between users, and the role of
design in negotiating this process. Theoretically he is located in the
intersection between STS theory and social movement theory. His analytical
focus is on the users' ideas and values and how these influence the design of
the technology.

SIGHT SOUND FESTIVAL #4
Art + Technology
23 – 27 may 2012
Eastern Bloc - Montreal, Canada
http://sightandsoundfestival.ca/

For its fourth edition, Sight Sound explores the theme: Systems of
Symmetry. The festival presents a program of aesthetic and visceral
works - intimate and singular in their approach at crossing art and
technology - by over fifteen emerging and mid-career Canadian and
international artists. Sight Sound presents new and evocative works,
which invest themselves in digital culture as well as its illusory,
sometimes dysfunctional powers. Twelve audio/visual performances and
installations are presented - many for the first time - with a program
of conferences and workshops, all at Eastern Bloc.

The Collapse, Part Two:
FINANCE: THE POLITICAL STAKES
http://www.gaite-lyrique.net/evenement/enjeux-politiques-de-la-finance

At the hour of its separation from the so-called real economy,
finance has become a central actor in the global political landscape.
The economist and writer André Orléan describes the current state of
finance as an all pervasive “thought of life”.

Finance dictates most of the main political axes today:
austerity, rigor, dismantling of public policies, compression of
salaries, ...

Furthermore, it undermines the foundations of the institutions of our time:
currencies, sovereign states, Europe ...

We are witnessing a global collapse.

How did finance impose itself onto the political field?
Does its power come from its technical innovations, from the extreme
complexity of financial products?

What are the consequences of these innovations for the modes of governance?
How is the power between states and markets distributed? What are the
possible counter strategies against the power of finance?

With:
Franco Berardi, François Morin, Antoinette Rouvroy, Marc Swynghedauw.

François Morin (economist) will present the recent emergence of
globalized finance,

its logical expansion, speculative bubbles, and hypertrophy;

Marc Swynghedauw (physicist and programmer, Ex Quant)
will speak about the technical aspects of finance,
and the evolution of market behavior in the last decade;

Antoinette Rouvroy (Research in Law and Computer Science, University of
Namur, Belgium)

will explain the concept of 'algorithmic governmentality',
the links between data mining, mathematical models, prediction and power;

Franco Berardi (Italian philosopher and activist) will be speaking about
the relation between language, finance,
and poetical excess of the movement, in the framework of the research of
a strategy of autonomy from financial capitalism.

First part : Finance as laboratory : mathematical models in the age of
automation

http://www.arts-et-metiers.net/musee.php?P=1001id=474cycle=105lang=fraflash=f

Today, science, technology and finance have become completely
interlinked entities. The first part of this conference series seeks to
investigate the nature of those links and explore the architecture of
financial engineering today. How are the tools of analysis, decision
support, automation, and also, by extension, networks and security
improving? how has finance become the prime laboratory for research and
development in cybernetics?

_
with :

- Christophe Quester, regular contributor to Agefi, newspaper about
information technologies in the world of finance, investigates the
increasing complexity of information systems.

- Jean-Philippe Bouchaud, physicist and professor at the Polytechnic
School, is interested in mathematical models and algorithms in use
today. He studies the physics of disordered systems, the statistics of
market movements and financial risk modelization.

- RYBN will introduce his project ADM8, an open source automated trading
program.

In Famous Carousel #7 | Destruction and reassembly
http://www.in-famous.com

Mishmashes of packaging, Dada collages, sampling, remixing, circuit
bending, mashups, datamosh, the process of deconstruction / reassembly
has crossed through the disciplines and over into the 20th Century.
Following its transformation upon the emergence of the internet and the
general acceleration in the development of computer technology, it gives
a glimpse of new avenues, between analogue and digital, a romantic
eulogy of the fragmented and the dizziness of infinite open lists. To
explore the ways of this world of media, in famous carousel invites
artists / reassembler that capture, isolate and recombine sounds,
images, objects, data, sites, genres ... Experience of the multiple and
the single, the dispersion and the heterogeneous.

Christophe André: born in 1979, is an activist designer.
He followed a double training: after having earned his
engineering degree, he chose to leave the world of industry
to develop other modes of production, in the Ecole Nationale
des Beaux Arts of Grenoble. Denouncing the design methods
objects which incorporates the principle of planned
obsolescence to control and reduce the life objects,
forcing in this way the consumption, he now realizes design
freedom objects, to reclaim the know-how, share,
raising the abstraction that surrounds our objects of
every day life, in order that we become responsible actors
in the world that we shape.

In the framework of its research on the Large Group Interaction, the
EnsadLab develops, with multiple partners, an apparatus for group
interaction by implementing technologies for the capture of persons in
a crowd situation, using infra-red cameras, face detection,
identification, tracking, indoor geolocation…

To test this new control and interaction devices, a party is
organized : Discontrol Party. An innovative series of concerts
performed in an interactive environment keyed to the public’s
reactions. A live collective and artistic experience.

programme détaillé

/

24 Juin

impact dancefloor maximal.

CEEPHAX ACID CREW - Royaume-Uni - acid house, techno

ligne, œuvres collectives, netart, sofware art, code art, ascii art,
flash art, google art, twitterart, tactical media, locative media, art

Mal au Pixel festival consists of exhibitions, workshops, public
meetings and concert series.
For its sixth edition, Mal au Pixel program weaves open dialogs on
digital creation, through different public meetings : WJ-SPOT, Altlabs
and Artisans Électroniques (Digital Craftmen). We gather together
many role-player on the independant digital art scene, may it be
immaterial through shared Internet experiences, or physical with the
open-source solutions as cultivated in many independant labs.

We will further explore bio and social issues, by hosting the House
Of Natural Fiber (Indonesia) in a residency, for the Intelligent
Bacteria project, applying open source to microbiology and alcohol
distillation.

With the exhibition and meeting series Utopies Monétaires
Internationales (International Monetary Utopias), we will unveil
several researches on alternative currencies, from artistic
experiences to actual prototypes.

DRIFT, another main spot of the festival, invites four creative «
turntablists » for crossed performances : eRikm, Arnaud Rivière,
Martin Tétreault, DJ Sniff. The performance will be carved onto an
experimental record, being capable of random play.

In the Transmissions performances event, the artists play with
different radio wavelenghts and signals. The DIY Music concert will
showcase inventor of electronic instruments, such as Casper
Electronics. And with I-R-L event, the latest audivisual experiences
are put to the test.

And this new edition will offer the opportunity to meet up with the
different Pixelache nodes and to figure out an event in 2012... to
celebrate the network's 10 years.

See you there !

-
Derek Holzer is an American sound artist living in Berlin, whose current
interests include DIY analog electronics, sound art, field recording and
the meeting points of electroacoustic, noise, improv and extreme music.
He has played live experimental sound, as well as taught workshops in
noise art technology. He comes in Paris to present his project
ToneWheels.

ToneWheels is an experiment in converting graphical imagery to sound,
inspired by some of the pioneering 20th Century electronic music
inventions. Transparent tonewheels with repeating patterns are spun over
light-sensitive electronic circuitry to produce sound and light
pulsations and textures. This all-analog set is performed entirely live
without the use of computers, using only overhead projectors as light
source, performance interface and audience display. In this way,
ToneWheels aims to open up the “black box” of electronic music and video
by exposing the working processes of the performance for the audience to
see.

Expand yourself

In the context of dematerialisation, the idea of re-embarking into the
physical world and renewing the feat of on-stage performances is
further spreading. The body, caught up in the tremors, is a powerful
ground of experimentation : in famous carousel is inviting performers
who explore the relationship between the body and sound (originally
anchored in the human body) and the technologies which interact with
the body to emphasize it, stretch it out, transform it and erase it…

ANTIDATAMINING, RYBN 2006-2009
http://www.antidatamining.net

Antidatamining is a series of visualizations of financial data
extracted from the web. Economy is represented by its main agents -
companies, groups and holdings, stock exchanges, banks and investment
funds - and their interactions : capital relationships, geographic
deployments, structuralization on market places. Beyond the current
crisis, its mediatic and polictic levers, Antidatamining is a
permanent monitoring device, which aims to highlight the structure of
the contemporary economy, seen as a complex dynamic system.

/
complexe.

[spectre] :::Chain Reaction::: The 3rd Upgrade! International meeting - Skopje, Macedonia

2008-09-12 Diskussionsfäden RYBN
Chain Reaction
11.09.08 - 14.09.08

The 3rd Upgrade! International meeting
in Skopje, Macedonia

It's our pleasure to announce the 3rd Upgrade! International meeting
Chain Reaction that will take place in Skopje, Macedonia from
September 11th to 14th, 2008. Growing from the Upgrade! International
community, this event takes the form of a city-wide digital art and
networked culture festival including exhibitions, screenings, live local
and streamed performances and a program of critical and active lectures
and workshops exploring numerous facets in the field of digital art.
Chain Reaction brings together artists, curators and art producers from
more than 20 cities worldwide (Asia, Canada, Europe, North America,
South America, South Africa, New Zealand)

The artistic program shows current tendencies in the use of hardware and
software development for artistic means. The artists presented here are
the emergent creative force on the international new media art scene.
Some of the works have been part of other exhibitions and festivals, and
others have been created exclusively for this event. One of the dominant
principles that have emerged in this collection of works is the blurring
of the boundaries between art, cultures, technology and physical
surroundings. This blurring is not about fading out; it is about
illuminating and distributing new kinds of practices. It is about
multiple modes of participating, navigating and deconstructing.

Chain Reaction explores issues of cultural development and growth in the
local region as well as within digital networks. Exhibiting works and
presentations from over 20 cities across the world, the organizers
expect this event to be a catalyst for dialog, future collaborations and
new cultural understanding.

The meeting theme Chain Reaction illustrates the network itself, the
way it works and functions, correlates and interacts. The
Upgrade!International started as a creative spark that gradually grew
into an international group of nodes influencing each other continually
through permanent communication. The meeting gathers Upgrade! nodes into
one core event in Macedonia and will hopefully cause a positive chain
reaction. Upgrade! network gathers annually or bi-annually, each time in
a different city for a festival by artists who participated in the
Upgrade! meetings around the world.

[spectre] [Sonom] - Farophonía Sintética

2008-06-21 Diskussionsfäden RYBN

Sonom - Farophonía Sintética
Santa Monica - Barcelona
- 19/20/21 june 2008

This multimedia installation by the group Sonom is a reinterpretation of
the Faraphonía de los Cuatro Elementos (roughly translatable as
“’Lighthouse-phony’ of the Four Elements”). It springs from the idea of
a lighthouse as a symbol that connects nature's four elements: from
land, it emits light, which travels through the air and reaches the sea.

In “Farophonía de los Cuatro Elementos”, Sonom creates an audiovisual
symphony that amplifies the perception of the natural elements that
converge around lighthouses. Farophonía is synthesised through the
creation of a hypnotic atmosphere based on audiovisual synaesthesia,
produced through the Faróphono and a Videofaro (Video-lighthouse).

By building the Videofaro, Sonom endows the lighthouse with the autonomy
to participate in artificially reconstructing the sensations and the
atmosphere that are generated in a lighthouse’s natural environment. The
Faróphono, a new kind of modular analogue synthesiser, synchronises the
Videofaro’s rotation rhythm and makes it possible to modify the
installation at the level of sound.

FAROPHONIA SINTETICA
INSTAL·LACIO MULTIMEDIA LIVE
OBRA DE SONOM (Barcelona)

Enguany
les obres que s'hi presenten s'inclouen sota el títol Llum i so.

SONOM.

Dijous 19, Divendres 20 i Dissabte 21
Farophonia Sintètica (Sonom)
Sonarama, Auditori del Centre d'Art Santa Mònica.
(Rambla de Santa Mònica, 7.)
Instal·lació autònoma: de 15h a 22h
Concerts Sonom live: 16h i 19h

http://www.maisonpop.net/spip.php?article776

espaces d'interaction ?
