[spectre] The Really Wild Show: London residency open call
The Really Wild Show SPACE Studios, London 4 residencies for emerging artists working with contemporary technological culture. Deadline: Wednesday 18 January 2012, 5pm. 4 x one month residencies at SPACE in London between March - April 2012 preceded by a four day residential retreat 20 - 24 Feb. Borrowing the title from the 1990’s children’s television show, The Really Wild Show sets out a loose framework of ‘wildness’ and its existence in spite of or resulting from technological industry. This is not only the wild-ness of the urban fox thriving off our wasted fried chicken or the explosion of marine life around the waste outfall pipes from Dungeness B. It is celebrities in the jungle and BBC faked wild polar bear births. It is urban Blue Tits performing an ‘avian rap’ or “Ballard’s perverse (but tender) ecology of petrol, blood, semen, crumpled metal” (Sinclair, I, 2010, in introduction to The Unofficial Countryside by Mabey,R, 1972). And whilst we dream of a separate romantic wilderness, it is more and more apparent that nature and technology are not diametrically opposed but evolving together as part of a greater ecology. We seek proposals from artists questioning the perception and realisation of the 'wild' through the very technologies we now use to access and form our world. While it is important that artists are engaged with technology* in their work, we are more interested in how artists explore technology and its shaping of contemporary experience rather than demonstrations of new technologies and their possibilities. * We define technology as anything from a compost toilet to lasers or RFID technologies. http://spacestudios.org.uk/whats-on/permacultures/the-really-wild-show-call-for-applications Jim Prevett Emergent Technologies Producer http://spacestudios.org.uk 07951405466 __ SPECTRE list for media culture in Deep Europe Info, archive and help: http://post.in-mind.de/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/spectre

PRACTICAL UTOPIAS: The Ykon Game Saturday 23 June, 4-7pm The White Building. Hackney Wick The YKON game, developed 2009 and inspired by Buckminster Fuller´s World Game, is based upon a simple thought experiment: Imagine the world is brought to a complete halt. Everything stops. No more business as usual. With the world being frozen, you and your fellow players can tinker with the world as you please. What will you change? How do you convince others to go along with your changes? And what about the consequences? In short: The YKON Game is a workshop, party and therapy session in one. MIDSUMMER with YKON is the first event of the Practical Utopias series of artistic programmes on current utopian thought and practice around the world. The aim is to map and discuss utopian practices, locate potential that will inspire collaboration across disciplines, and help to establish a system to identify, support and kick-start practical utopias within our day-to-day life. [spectre] Reminder ///// Artist Residencies Open Call ///// Permacultures London
Deadline this friday! OPEN CALL FOR PERMACULTURES RESIDENCIES SPACE, London / The Big Trip / / Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow / Five residencies for emerging artists working with contemporary technological culture. ++ Deadline: Friday 24th August 5pm ++ SPACE is looking for applications from UK based emerging artists for two connected rounds of Permacultures residencies at The White Building in Hackney Wick. The residencies are for artists who question our understanding of the world through the very technologies that we use to access and form it. Two residencies will take place in Autumn 2012 (The Big Trip) and three residencies in Spring 2013 (Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow). Taking their titles from one short story by Kurt Vonnegut, these two connected rounds of residencies take their cue from storytelling, or more precisely, sharing stories in a world of endless information, and seemingly unsparing, efficient competition. This is storytelling within the world of the meta, of the constructed media realities, and the blurring of fact and fiction. Each residency receives use of the residency studio in The White Building, a fee, a production budget and support to realise new artwork. Selection Panel: Damien Roach (Artist). Marialaura Ghidini (or-bits.com), Jim Prevett (SPACE), Paul Pieroni (SPACE) Full details and information on how to apply: http://spacestudios.org.uk/whats-on/residency-artists/open-call-for-permacultures-residencies PERMACULTURES residencies are kindly supported by Arts Council England, London and Bloomberg through the Bloomberg ON partnership. [spectre] Simon Blackmore Talk | SPACE | London
Join us for drinks and a talk by the first PermaCultures artist in residence Simon Blackmore. Simon will talk about his previous work and his residency at SPACE. Thursday 7 May 6.30pm During his time at SPACE Blackmore adapted an open source rapid prototyping machine to convert electro-magnetic activity (such as electro-magnetic frequencies as used by mobile phones) into beautiful animated drawings. Blackmore creates sculptures with a lo-fi aesthetic drawing on influences from woodworking, hobby style electronics and open source software. The time consuming process of these works aims to question the role of the individual in relation to the mechanisms of a technologically driven society. Alongside his solo practice Blackmore collaborates with Antony Hall and Steve Symons under the name 'Owl Project'. Combining rustic woodworking, electronics and experimental music, pieces such as 'Sound Lathe', 'Log1ks' and 'ilogs' have been exhibited and demonstrated live nationally and internationally. http://www.simonblackmore.net http://www.owlproject.com/ London and Berlin based artist Nick Laessing has been selected for the next PermaCultures residency.
