Teufelsberg is also the name of the (now abandoned) spy station built by the Americans on top of the hill during the Cold War. White too, and another regular destination for my ‘color walks’. En route, I began to notice the white mushrooms that grow profusely nearby, often having shapes that seemed to replicate the geodesic domes of the spy station. The affinities encouraged associational thinking: the work of Berlin-based photographer Karl Blossfeldt, for example, whose well-known images of plant details seem to evoke varying architectural styles; and more obviously, one of the dominant images from the Cold War era - the mushroom cloud generated by the atomic bomb. In contrast, my ‘Red Walks’ took place on the busy streets of the city center. Guided by the color, my starting point was a young woman at a bus stop with vivid red hair extensions. Women with dyed red hair going about their business became one theme. Another was how a color traditionally associated with love and eroticism has become vulgarized in the sex shops of Berlin. In addition, I began to think about a type of politics in Berlin that is often designated red. Fresh and promising if one concentrates on the revolutionary challenge of Karl Liebknecht, Rosa Luxemburg and the Spartacists in Berlin at the end of the First World War. Less so if the focus is on the institutionalization of revolution, including the legacy of the Spartacists, that quickly characterized the authoritarian regime known as the German Democratic Republic, with its capital in East Berlin. Each series has a different emphasis. Retrospectively, the ‘White Walks’ deal with time, corroding a familiar distinction between the long duration of natural history and the short duration of political history. Dazu werden etwa 20 Künstlerinnen und Künstler eingeladen sich mit dem Areal und seiner Geschichte auseinanderzusetzen und auf die spezifischen Begebenheiten des Ortes zu reagieren. Historische, geografische und architektonische Eigenheiten des Teufelsbergs werden unter die Lupe genommen und musikalisch umgesetzt. Klangobjekte, Soundperformances, Workshops und Audiowalks verwandeln das Gelände rings um die ehemaligen Abhörgebäude für drei Tage in eine begehbare Open-Air-Soundinstallation, die für ein Wochenende lang entdeckt, durchwandert und an der auf verschiedene Weise teilgenommen werden kann. We can provide to the partner with all the content to make a real exhibition if the partner has their own VR glasses, monitors and projectors. We will select lecturers and hold conferences. We will make international publications in the media. From the partner's side: Finds a location for the event for 2-3 weeks (interested in partners who already have a location or can get it for free). Administer the exhibition. Are engaged in promotion in the local cultural environment. Promote visits to the exhibition offline and online. If quarantine restrictions or lockdown are imposed, the event can only take place virtually. Partners will receive 4,000 EUR to promote a virtual exhibition. "CASA JASMINA" is a project in the business space of domestic electronic networking, or, "the internet of things in the Home", a new way of housing related to open source . The prize will focus on the use of electronic art inside the private domestic space: "HOUSE GUESTS". stallation: an eighteen-minute-long, practically unedited registration of the freezing process of soap liquid. Soap only freezes at very low temperatures, because the water remains protected by the soap acids for a very long time. Within a number of minutes, the colourful soap slowly sinks down in the film of soap, until a vacuum of a very thin layer of water remains, in which frozen crystals whirl round. Only at a very low temperature, an accelerated freezing process occurs, during which ice crystals transform into fractal-like patterns. The video is accompanied by a soundtrack composed by Assmann and Strijbos, with a mixture of soundscapes and recordings of self-made instruments which they developed in earlier collaborations. Liquid Solid was made possible with the generous support of the Creative Industries Fund NL, Gemeente Rotterdam and The Finnish Society of Bioart. AKITOSHI HONDA - CRYSTAL STUDY is an installation which turns the non-perceivable process of crystallisation into an artistic light installation. The earth is developed in decade and is even still developing every minute, every second: we can say it is crystallisation. For a human being it is difficult to sense phenomena such as global warming in real time, because the timescale is too long and the change too small. Since long ago humans have tried to observe such intangible environmental phenomena., for example Stormglass (aka FitzRoy glass, which developed in 19th century for the weather forecast. This device reacts with chronological change from temperature, atmospheric electromagnetic noise, which changes in a long time scale that humans can’t observe or feel clearly. In this project, the crystallisation process in Stromglass is translated to a human perceivable phenomenon in an aesthetic way with help with modern technology. A glass tube is filled with a special liquid which reacts with temperature, the electronic magnetic field, etc. This reaction happens on a molecular level and is impossible to observe with the human eye, but laser light makes this process visible. Light scattering and absorption is represented as a light pattern. Such phenomena are also applied in the scientific analytic method known as spectroscopy. /// SOLID PHILIP SILVA & FELIX E. KLEE - STM – scanning tunneling microscope – is a device with subatomic resolution. A needle, just one atom wide at its end, is moved very close to a sample. It is then scanned over the sample’s surface. For determining the distance between needle and surface at each point, a tunneling current is measured, a quantum mechanical effect. The result is an image of the surface. Each spot in the image corresponds to one atom. In the context of the installation, the microscope is used as a realtime video generator. It outputs the superposition of two states. Graphite is a crystalline state of carbon with hexagonal symmetry. Superimposed on the scan of graphite is disturbance caused by the presence of observers of the measuring process. The device is very sensitive. Only when quiet it is possible to see a clear image of the crystal. For building the microscope, Philip Silva and Felix E. Klee collaborate with Luka Karoli, an electrical engineer and Ana Bulović, a biophysicist. The team’s mission is to provide a cheap device for home use and trigger the nanotech maker revolution. Chaos theory, swarm behavior and processes of emerging life in the biological world (morphogenesis) are the three dimensions in which the selected projects unfold the beauty of modern algorithms. Using their fundamental rules to set a visual language, these works challenge the audience to look inside the intelligence of the 'Mother of Design': Nature, while anticipating the contemporary debate underlying the science and technology that makes it possible to bring those representations to the next level by means of an Artificial Intelligence (A.I.): the ultimate state in which the algorithm generates its own creative behaviour. The algorithm refers to the synchronisation algorithm of fireflies. The installation consists of a bunch of small robots which comprise a self-organised system, which is a characteristic feature of swarm intelligence. Each robot communicates by an input/output system such as a laser-beam and light detector with an algorithm inspired by the synchronized blinking of a firefly. Robots generates rhythm and make sound by solenoids and emit laser-beams. Synchronisation emerges not by conductor but by communicating with each other. Conditions such as the size of place or density of robots and small change of parameters make dynamic effects to the composition. LaserBugs attempts to create an artificial nature phenomenon as new way of audiovisual experience. Combined with the installation, Krisjanis Rijnieks and So Kanno collaborate to show the simulator of LaserBugs. This simulator was used by So Kanno to examine the behaviour of the robots before making it real, and has been reprogrammed by Krisjanis Rijnieks as a projection mapping. TeZ - PLASM PLASM is an immersive, audiovisual installation that evokes an endless voyage through a continually transforming biological landscape. Inspired and informed by the work of computer science pioneer Alan Turing in mathematical biology, PLASM aims to explore and revive Turing’s research into the chemical basis of spontaneous pattern formation in the natural world (morphogenesis). Large scale moving images and ambisonics soundscape immerse the visitor into an ever evolving environment of organic forms resembling living cells, tissues, organs and other lifelike formations. Through its continual generative system, PLASM exemplifies Norbert Wiener's famous adage that "We are but whirlpools in a river of ever-flowing water. Not stuff that abides but patterns that perpetuate themselves." Ran Ancor - Second Brain Second Brain is an emotional machine that expresses the meaning of emotional experience rather than physical reality, through the modulation of different colors, revealing its moods, temperament and personality. His work explores the relationship between nature and humanity and employs a fundamental approach to artistic creation that seeks the inherent aesthetic and emotional potential of novel technologies. He currently lives and works in Berlin. LUIZ ZANOTELLO (BR) is a Brazilian media artist/designer based in Bremen. His work occurs within digital media studies, often through kinetic installations, poetic machinery and speculative interactions. He has exhibited at two editions of FILE in São Paulo (2011/2012), at the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna (2013), at the Dubai Design Week (2015), at the Resonate Festival in Belgrade (2016), as well as in different exhibitions in Germany. A designer graduated by the São Paulo State University in 2012, he is currently a masters student at the Digital Media program of the University of the Arts Bremen. GIOVANNI SALICE (IT) is an Italian artist/musician working in the field of sonic-media. He holds a degree in classical oboe. After this education, he studied electronic music and visual arts and, through the years, he increased his interest into film and installative art. He is currently working on microscopic sounds, Artificial Intelligence and field-recording. Montageexperimente im Kino Alejandro González Inárritus Im postmodernen Kino hat die Montage eine neue Bedeutung erhalten: mit ihrem Doppelprinzip der Trennung und Zusammenfügung von Bildern scheint sie dem Bedürfnis nach Uneindeutigkeit und Ambivalenz erzählter Zeit in besonderem Maße entgegenzukommen. Ehemals *geschlossene' Erzählungen können zu einer Vielzahl prismatischer Brechungen von Sichtweisen, Referenzen und Realitäten montiert werden, unterschiedliche Realitätsebenen können durch den Schnitt in Bezug gesetzt werden. Filme wie Nolan's MEMENTO (2001) oder Figgis' TIME CODE (2002) stellen Konventionen des filmischen Erzählens auf provokante Weise in Frage und zeigen, dass es offensichtlich ein neues Interesse an einer veränderten Sicht von Realität, auch im Kino, gibt. Unter einem Blog versteht man eine Web Applikation, die periodisch aktualisierte Einträge auf einer Webseite in chronologischer Reihenfolge darstellt, zugänglich für jeden Internet-Nutzer. Blogs können politische Journale sein, aber auch persönliche Online-Tagebücher, sie können Linksammlungen enthalten, Fotos, Kommentare und Beiträge von anderen Sites, seit kurzem auch Audio- und Videodaten. Das Themenspektrum reicht von obskuren Spezialgebieten bis zu allgemeinen gesellschaftlich relevanten Fragestellungen. A la différence des quelques futurs détournements utilitaires du site pour créer un peu d'esthétique sociale sur la place de la bataille de Stalingrad à Paris, notre idée était une mise en projections visuelles et sonores à l'entrée de cette capitale : des questions de la fluidité non pas seulement physique mais également des datas. Transformant ainsi cet espace délimitant les vieilles frontières refermées sur la ville, par une ouverture urbaine, à l'heure d'une sombre planétarisation que nous préparent certaines utilisations des technologies. I am no longer drafting a utopian performance which could have involved an immersive projection (cf. estimate drawn up with the UTRAM company) within Ledouxs Rotonde, and have been made possible by means of an inflatable dome (cf. study by another company), as conceived by me since 2001. He studied Art History and Philosophy at Keio University, where his graduating thesis was on concepts of the frame and the sublime, based on a critical reading of Kant, Derrida and Lyotard. During this time, he was also active as a DJ in the underground electronic music scene and formed a collective called smashTV productions which organized club events and salon style gatherings. After professionally working as a translator, researcher on alternative art spaces, DJ and construction worker, he moved to New York to pursue graduate studies at NYU?s Interactive Telecommunications Program where he received his Master?s degree in Physical Computing and Interaction Design. Since 2005 he has been involved with STEIM?s (Studio for Electro-Instrumental Music, Amsterdam) R&D lab. From 2007 on, he is STEIM?s Artistic Director, guiding the institution?s creative output and representing it?s activities through performing, curating and lecturing around the world. He has performed throughout Europe, Asia and The United States at various venues and international festivals including Club Transmediale Berlin, Warsaw Autumn, Japan Society NYC, The Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater (REDCAT) Los Angeles and FLOW Festival Helsinki. He has released 12 DJ mixes and 2 solo albums from labels in Lebanon and the UK and his work has been reviewed in the New York Times, All About Jazz, The WIRE and createdigitalmusic.com.
