Yeah, the only reason I mentioned that is that freedesktop new account
creation can be _very_ slow :)

At this point I'm mainly wondering what machine will need ssh access to
which other machine (assuming we have a git server on one side and a
webserver on the other). I'd rather non of them can ssh on the other
side.

That's easiest, sure, but a remote ssh/pubkey pull should work fine as
well, afaik.

I don't know that granting commit access needs to be fast. The main
material change would be sending the signal 'patches welcome'. (Of
course, odds are you'll get 0 submitted patches :-/).

I'm happy to do the leg work on the commit hooks, if that would help.

If the git repository is on freedesktop, giving commit access could be
tricky (as in 'slow'). If it's on spice-space.org, should be doable, but
someone has to do the setup...

With the spam accounts destroyed, and new account creation having to be
done manually by an admin (instead of being able to do it from the web),
I think we should be good with respect to spam.

A git would probably have less spam :) Actually all of the non popular
platforms are probably better (then again, mediawiki had good spam
measures for a long time when Daniel was managing it).

If the idea seems sensible, then I'd propose that we work on the Wiki until
we feel it stands mostly on it's own, and when we hit that point, we shift
the main pages to reflect that.

The website/wiki content needs some reorganization for sure, and the
manual editing of the static website content needs to be improved.
The next question is if we want to achieve that with a wiki, or by
switching to a different 'CMS'. The wiki has the big advantage of being
already there. I think Marc-André favoured http://jekyllrb.com for the
static website part.

Yeah, I worked a bit with Jekyll, and it was nice. I also find plain
html + a nice css (e.g. bootstrap) surprisingly pleasant to work with.

If we do keep a static component, I'd suggest we establish a git tree
with git hooks that auto update (ala Github sites). And have patches

The website/wiki content needs some reorganization for sure, and the

Hey guys,

Now that the Wiki is in theory usable, I would like to propose that we
shift the bulk of spice-space.org content to the Wiki.

I'm willing to do a bit of work in the Wiki to help tidy some of this
up, but I think that would only be satisfying if I felt that it was
actually improving the user experience.

Right now, I find the Wiki and the main page to be a strange sort of
mirror, with both places having similar nav and similarly out of date
information.

If the idea seems sensible, then I'd propose that we work on the Wiki
until we feel it stands mostly on it's own, and when we hit that point,
we shift the main pages to reflect that.

Thoughts?

[Spice-devel] Wiki cleanup

2014-09-23 Thread Christophe Fergeau
Hey,

Our wiki has been ridden with spam for a while, I've spent some time
cleaning that up (removing thousands of spam users and pages).
I've tried to be careful not to remove non-spam users/pages but I'm
fairly sure I've made a few mistakes there, I apologize for that.

Please let me know if your account has been removed, or if some pages
have gone missing. You are most likely to be impacted if you created
your account or new content in the last year or so. I made a backup of
the wiki database beforehand, so it should be possible to get back
missing data...

Last but not least, to avoid getting more spam in the future, I've
disabled creation of new users in the wiki. If you want a wiki account,
you will have to email the spice-devel mailing list, or Uri or me if you
want to keep it private.

Sorry for any inconvenience, but the wiki is much cleaner now!
