X06 Logging Week 21st to 28th March 2011 
 
The Enigma2000 X06 Team are looking to Spooks members for some help in a
concentrated Logging Week for 7 days commencing Monday 21st March 2011. We
hope that you will join us in trying to track down more of these elusive
signals, both those on known and unknown frequencies.
 
A little background may help.
 
 
The Enigma2000 designator for the Mazielka series is X06.
 
Mazielka is thought to be a selcall system used by the Russian MFA to alert
out-stations, in advance, of forthcoming messages to be sent out in Crowd 36
or similar.
 
Up to 95% of these signals are sent out at random times on up to 350
different frequencies.
 
The signals take the form of  a repeated  series of 6 tones (at 840, 870,
900, 930, 970, and 1015 Herz) sent in under 2 seconds and in any sequence,
producing 720 variants.
 
The signals are usually transmitted in AM but are, generally easier to spot
in USB. Each transmission usually last 4/5 minutes
 
Apart from the 720 variants, there are other Mazielka tone combinations of
simple 2, 3, 4 and 5 tones which you may hear and, of course, the frequency
list  covers only those frequencies where we have already logged
transmissions.
 
You can also expect to find Mazielka signals all the way from around 4 MHz
up to 25 MHz but their random nature makes them difficult to pinpoint
 
Identifying a Mazielka signal is simply a matter of reading the tones in
order. For example 840 Hz (lowest tones) is designated as "1", 870 Hz as
"2", 900 Hz as "3", 930 Hz as "4", 970 Hz as "5", and 1015 Hz (the highest)
as "6".

Wow, that's a lot of frequencies to monitor. I am not familiar with
X06. But I'm willing to give it a go from the USA.

Although no specific times are mentioned at the website, are there any
times when it's more likely to hear X06? Does it just appear at random
times or have they started at times like on the hour or at 15 minutes
past the hour, etc? Are any of those frequencies more likely to be
active than others? Has it been heard recently?

Also, does the "4/5 minutes" length mean "4 to 5 minutes" or "four
fifths of a minute"?

Thanks Zack, that you want to be a part of our great logging community, 
which increases from day to day.

Yes, there are freqs, which are more used by X06, for example 16025 or 
14871 kHz ("156234" scale). There are no fixed times, but mostly you have 
luck (at least here in Europe) between 0800 and 1200 UTC. But we look 
especially for members of other time zones, when Europeans are sleeping - 
or working. We don't have many loggers from out of Europe, but there are 
some. With "4/5 mins" we mean 4 or 5 mins. Usually the times X06 is sending 
are random times, but there are cases, when X06 began on the hour more 
frequently.

Hi Zack and many thanks for the response.

To answer your questions first:

The frequency list is taken from our database and covers all the frequencies
X06 has been known to use in the past few years. These are ideal for
entering into a scanner which will rotate through these frequencies in 1 or
two minutes.

There are no specific times, and this is the great difficulty - the signals
largely appear at random but we notice an upsurge when there is a major
event such as the Georgia troubles in October 2007 and August 2008, the Anna
Chapman case in July 2010, the Moscow Airport terrorist attack in Jan 2011
and of course the terrible events in Japan last week.

There are usually signals to be found between 07:00 and 11:00 on weekdays.
This table is taken from the database between 1st - 12th March this year and
were all logged either in UK or Scandinavia

Thanks for the info!

That time period is mostly night time here and a lot of the
frequencies are below the MUF at that time (which has been around 10
MHz lately). I'll give a listen but I'm doubtful I'll hear much above
10 MHz. Possibly at other times of the day.
