RE: [sqlite] Re: sqlite-users Digest 22 May 2004 05:23:11 -0000 Issue 115

2004-05-25 Thread Fred Williams
I think there are a number of extremely well designed and implemented "free"
product out in the market that are at the top of their heap, but are the
exception to the general rule. I think SQLite is possibly the best example
of that I have ever found in my entire career. But, SQLite is like most of
the other good "Free" products I have found, they are the product of some
individual who's primary focus in life is not software development, and they
come with source.

True, I'd like to have half the money and time I have thrown after
"commercial" products that were not as advertised. But, I don't feel the
answer to that problem is free. The market takes care of those products. I
know, I could send you a list of them, if you have DSL or better
connectivity. I have learned a very long time ago, if at all possible, buy
the source, at least you will have that to fall back on.

When you're saying "free," do you mean "free, as in a beer?" Or are you
talking about closed source free software? I came in late.

Sorry, Not paying too much attention to the authors in the thread. It
never ceases to amaze me the endless number of "software developers"
wishing to develop a "commercial" product using "free" software.

Similar to the all fired up young lady, extremely excited about being an
MSN beta tester. Who was admitting she was spending way too much time
testing for Micekysoft, and wondering why she could not get paid to beta
test. I proposed that maybe there was way too many like her willing to
do it for free.

Well, generally I think building a business on "free" products, for which
one does not control the source is like building a house on sand. It can be
done, but ... I would have thought your question was related to personal
use. If I can't afford a "commercial" full license product I think I would
first review my business plan.

IANALE, but my reading is a little different. I think that all its saying
is that you can't release your software under a license that forces the
-microsoft- libraries to be open source. According to www.gnu.org, that
shouldn't be a problem:
http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html#WindowsRuntimeAndGPL

Anyway, better solutions have already been offered so I'll say no more on
this thread.

Benjamin.

It looks like they only bar you from distributing their redistributables
under the terms of a viral license. You'd still be free to compile,
link, and distribute binaries of open source apps under other licenses.

Check the license! It is not really fair! Don't use this toolchain.
Oops, I hadn't read the license (nor used the software). The licensing
restrictions are rather agressive towards all Open Source software.
Read especially section 3.2. The EULA is here:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/visualc/vctoolkit2003/eula.aspx
IANAL, but the way I understand it, you can't link against their

or distribute your binaries under a license that requires that the

Sorry for suggesting Microsoft's "free" toolchain. I didn't know any
better.

Cheers,
Ulrik
