Painful! I'm just not thinking like a criminal, I guess. In my head,
having the repository at a static IP seems like a good way to get
caught, but of course whoever is hosting that IP has to be cooperative
as well. And certainly there's malware out there that phones home all
the time, so in hindsight my point makes no sense.

Wouldn't installing malicious plugins involve either putting malicious
code into a repository (which seems like a good way to get caught though
not a certainty) or having write access to the appropriate directories
on the target computer? And if someone with bad intentions has write
access to the directories, wouldn't involving HTTP be extra work for no
extra reward?

I'm curious how many malware authors are targeting HTTP on internal home
networks. Is it safe to say that relatively few people are running any
kind of server at all on their home networks? And, if the numbers are
indeed low, why would HTTP be a tempting target compared to something
using a more direct approach?

I can't decide if this is a near-complete non-issue or if I'm somehow
missing something painfully obvious that I'll eventually regret. Are
there currently Bad Things out there in the wild that are taking
advantage of insecure home HTTP? I realize that just because there may
not be now doesn't mean there never will be, I'm just trying to
understand what the current real world risk is. The claim that
interfacing with LMS via HTTP may be a serious enough security risk to
require mitigation caught me completely by surprise.

I'm probably an outlier in that I have several things running internally
using HTTP. It's interesting to me that NONE of them, including some
pretty hefty stuff like TrueNAS, are using HTTPS for their interfaces.
Are the people behind TrueNAS, piHole, LMS and whatever else I can't
remember at the moment simply *lazy* or are they reasonably certain that
they aren't creating a security risk?

I assume there's browser-accessed software out there that uses HTTPS
over the home network because someone thought it was worth it, but I
have yet to see *any*. (Again, I'm not claiming that's a scientific
survey, I just find it interesting.)

[SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] https for internal network?

2021-10-19 Thread atrocity

A friend is finally getting his music online and is looking at LMS
alternatives due to the fact that, as far as either of us can tell, all
communication via the web interface, smartphone/tablet clients, etc. is
vanilla http and not https.

I don't recall ever reading complaints about this here before and am
wondering if anyone else views this as a real problem. His concern is
that somehow malware will ride in somehow and...I'm not entirely sure.

One specific complaint he has is plain text login to the server, which
makes me wonder if there's any reason to have a password in the first
place if you aren't opening ports (bad idea!) and aren't trying to keep
kids out.

Is he overreacting or are we fans just accepting the risk because
everything else about LMS works so well?

He's talking about going to dark side and getting $ono$ on the
assumption that it's more secure.

Any and all advice is welcome.

I've noticed that as well, the issue is global.

While I've definitely had this happen over the years, it doesn't happen
to me anywhere near as often as it happens to you. And while I most
closely associate the problem with playing on a Touch, I *think* I may
have seen it on a Pi running Squeezelite and JiveLite, but it's been a
long time and I can't swear to it.

In my situation, it's always been while playing files from my own
library, and most of mine are FLAC. One time that really stands out was
when playing the 3-CD live Crowded House set several years ago. I had
fallen asleep, and woke up to hear that gapless playback was very
obviously gone. Everything should flow on that album, but didn't. The
artwork and metadata was also consistently one song behind. I had
specifically played that album, it wasn't randomly put on the playlist
by any of the available options for doing so.

Most nights I use TrackStat + CustomSkip to play Never Played Albums all
night long on a Pi. So the playlists are large and the music continuous,
but as I say, I don't tend to see the problem there and can't be sure
that I ever have. It's definitely happened repeatedly on the Touch,
though.

The fact that others have pointed out that skipping "forward", which
actually restarts the currently playing track, fixes the problem
certainly makes me think that all of us seeing this are seeing exactly
the same issue.

Frankly, if this happened to me as often as it does to you, it would be
an absolute deal-breaker.

I've seen it, definitely. And although you may not notice if you aren't
listening to something where it matters, when this happens to me it also
destroys gapless playback.

I've fixed it in the past by skipping forward, which actually restarts
the currently playing track.

It's happened off and on for years but it's rare and I've never seen it
put anything useful in the log.

Looks like a WAV with ID3 tags. I don't know if that's your problem, but
it's certainly not standard. Just as a test, convert it to FLAC and see
if there's any difference. I believe that FLAC by default does not keep
anything it considers non-standard.

Yes...bad wording on my part. I meant that I had discovered the two-step
process before reading your post and am happy that you were able to give
me a very useful all-in-one method.

A curious thing with some (but not all) YouTube videos: You can download
lower-resolution video with better audio, higher-resolution video with
lesser audio or -silent- video at even higher resolutions. So if you
want to make the best version of that "Atom Heart Mother" performance
for yourself, you need to download the silent video, then download one
with reasonable audio, demux the audio and mux it with the better video.
Fortunately, it almost takes longer to explain than to do.

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! This works perfectly! Thank you also
for your comments about the ffmpeg documentation. I made a good living
as a mainframe programmer for decades, so it's always more than a little
embarrassing when I try to read documentation and find that I just don't
get it.

Thank you also to JohnB: MP4Box also worked as long as I did a two-step
process by first going to an .aac file, then converting that .aac to
.m4a. Given how fast it worked, I'm confident there was no re-encoding.

That in turn gave me the idea to try a two-step approach with ffmpeg,
and that also worked. Telling ffmpeg to go MP4->.aac->.m4a made LMS
happy, but obviously any true one-line solution is going to be
preferable. I've encapsulated it in a bash script file with lots of
comments.

Now I'm off to score a copy of that record and play with the YouTube
plugin.

Thank you everyone again very, very much!

Yes...they behave normally everywhere except LMS...and even there they
play, they just won't go into the library. I'm used to the opposite,
where LMS is the most reliable option while everything else is iffy!

> Then try converting the file only copy single audio into an audio only
> output not an m4v.

I may be doing it wrong (in fact, obviously I AM doing it wrong!), but
that's what I'm attempting. I just want a standard audio-only .m4a
file.

> What ffmpeg command line are you using to convert ?

I went with a very simple:

Code:

ffmpeg -i 'infile.mp4' -c copy outfile.m4a

> Otherwise post an an example file to be examined.

Good idea! https://www.dropbox.com/s/ww59fqf7retp191/DIY.m4a?dl=0 is the
audio from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4Fu2MF8hcs. (And yes, I'm
going to just buy the record now that I see I can get it for a
reasonable price via Discogs.)

It seems likely that all I need to do is find the right set of options
on the ffmpeg command line, but looking at the extensive documentation
last night made my tiny little brain hurt. I'm pretty sure that a big
part of the problem is that what ffmpeg calls "metadata" and you refer
to more correctly as the file structure is being carried over from the
video file. I theoretically know how to override that, I just don't know
what values I need to use, if that makes any sense.

Thank you for your suggestions!

Worst case, given that everything else is happy with the file, I can
just convert to FLAC and waste a relatively microscopic amount of
storage space.

[SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Odd AAC/M4A Issue

2018-12-05 Thread atrocity

I've been fooling around with downloading videos from YouTube and
demuxing the AAC streams into M4A files. (Note: Not for piracy of easily
paid-for items, but for things like
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VtldnhbjmEs.) LMS will happily play the
resulting files via drag and drop or Music Folder, but will not
recognize the metadata and, I assume for that reason, doesn't add them
to the library after a scan. The files behave completely normally when
opened in Foobar2000, mp3tag and (shockingly!) even in iTunes.

I'm using ffmpeg to do the work and can immediately see via its helper
ffprobe that there are differences in the metadata. A "normal" AAC/M4A
file starts off with:

Code:

  major_brand : M4A
  minor_version : 0
  compatible_brands: M4A mp42isom

While the files LMS doesn't like start off with:

Code:

  major_brand : M4V
  minor_version : 512
  compatible_brands: isomiso2avc1

I plan to keep looking at the ffmpeg documentation to see if I can find
any obvious answer, but it makes my brain hurt, so I thought I'd ask
here first just in case someone else has encountered this.

I finally just created a Temp directory on my music drive and started
downloading podcasts to it, which means that I'm just playing a local

It's not very elegant and maybe it won't work for Twit, but it solved my

1. Even if it's inconvenient for the long term, can you try running
everything wired just for now to be sure it isn't a WiFi issue? If not,
can you change the WiFi channel on your router?

2. Are you by any chance running multiple servers via cloned MicroSD

[SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] AAC not fully gapless?

2017-12-27 Thread atrocity

I'm usually a happy FLAC guy but have been experimenting with AAC
because I'm helping a friend set up an iTunes library. I recently
encoded the ultimate gapless album "The Dark Side of the Moon" and am
hearing definite and repeatable little gaps/disruptions at track
changes. Those issues are not there when playing the same files in the
Windows version of iTunes.

Files were created from the FLACs using fdkaac in Ubuntu Linux with this
command line (the $variables are populated earlier and I don't believe
are relevant):

Code:

  flac -d "$file" -c | fdkaac -o
/mnt/WD8TBNAS03/TempAudio/Workspace/Convert/Travis/"$justfile".m4a --profile 2
--bitrate-mode 4 --afterburner 1 --transport-format 0 --gapless-mode 2 --title
"$title" --artist "$artist" --album "$album" --genre "$genre" --track "$track"
--album-artist "$albumartist" --date "$date" -

The original FLACs play back perfectly as do ALAC files created from the
same FLACs. MP3s created with the gapless option in LAME are better, yet
still ever so slightly imperfect.

Any suggestions? Is this a bug?

Thank you!

2017-07-03 Thread atrocity

mherger wrote:
> Totally off-topic... but may I ask why you need to switch?

Several reasons:

1. I keep a separate server for all-night use. It uses several of
Erland's plugins to cycle through never-played albums with a bunch of
genre restrictions. I'm not the best sleeper and find it pleasant to
have music going if/when I wake up in the middle of the night. That one
feeds a dedicated player in the bedroom.

2. MicroSD cards aren't especially robust, so I like to have one or more
backups servers in case one of them gives out. In the early days of my
SB addiction my worst fear was having a server or player die, but that's
no longer a serious concern.

3. My library is well over 100,000 tracks at this point, so running even
just a scan-for-new winds up interrupting the music during the final
steps. So if I have to do a scan, I like to be able to switch to another
server for listening.

4. I have a housemate with a separate server that only serves up his
music.

5. I'm insane.

I love the functionality of iPeng...and I never use it any more. In my
experience, it's fantastic if you don't need to switch between multiple
servers with big libraries. Unfortunately, I do need to do that and it
seems that iPeng insists on downloading/caching tons of data with every
switch. It becomes unusable for several minutes and can even cause the
music to stutter. At least, that's the case in my setup, though it
occurs to me that I probably haven't tried since going to faster NASes.

I also like using DTS to check for bit perfection, though I have no idea
if that's possible with AppleTV or your downstream equipment.

My main server is a Pi and it works fine with my library:

Code:

  Total Tracks: 102,463
  Total Albums: 8,517
  Total Artists: 17,991
  Total Genres: 269
  Total Playing Time: 7567:14:11

Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] A massive thanks to maintainers

The Squeezebox system is still the best, most reliable, most flexible
and user-friendly thing out there. I can't thank you enough.
