I have never had issues with embedded artwork and OGG/Vorbis files. Are
you sure that you are using Vorbis-tags and not ID3-tags? Because the
latter is not recommended for OGG/Vorbis, although technically it
sometimes will work.

Talking about recommendations: CDex really is not a good idea to use for
ripping these days, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CDex for more info
of the reasons.
Besides the security issues, it is technically also substandard and will
not guarantee bitperfect rips of your CDs. There are many better ripping
tools available.

I indeed remember some issues in the past when playing files with huge
embedded artwork, although from my memory this wasn't only with
OGG/Vorbis files. As I keep my artwork external as well, I haven't
investigated it in more detail.

Agreed! One possible simplification might be to drop the 7.7 branch

For CLI software installs on Debian based systems apt, apt-get or
aptitude are the tools to use for over twenty years now, they were
developed specifically to resolve dependency problems during installs.
Direct use of dpkg is only for specific use cases. in therefore don't
quite understand your first comment: 'which don't yet support etc...'

Afaik apt is to be preferred above aptitude these days.

How is your Touch connected? Via ethernet or Wifi? The first thing I
think of is a network issue.
On all my devices gapless playback of FLAC works fine, I don't have ALAC
files or that many gapless mp3-files to test.

I have gapless playback issues with Ogg/Vorbis files & Squeezelite based
software players however, but a thread on this forum about that issue is
completely silent.

A lot of people (including myself) on this forum are using pCP as a

- What's the media scanner? Should I try it?
- I don't care.

Same here. Tried it a long time ago, but wasn't satisfied with it. It
als caused a hanging media scanner sometimes from what I remember (there
must be a thread or two about it on this forum), so removal is fine with
me. Do we also have to rename LMS to Logitech Music Server then? :-)

[SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] LMS rescan problems

2018-10-28 Thread zordaz

Since using Xubuntu 18.04 I am having problems with rescanning my local
music collection.
Scanning via the gui using the 'Looking for new and changed media files'
works fine.
The option 'Clear library and rescan everything' however results in a
hanging scan process or an incomplete scan result (sometimes the former,
sometime the latter).
When hanging I need to manually kill all LMS processes via the Linux
command line, a prober restart of LMS doesn't solve the hanging scan
process.

When hanging server.log says:
[18-10-27 00:14:10.9152] main::main (205) Starting Logitech Media Server

I plan to upgrade my Xubuntu 18.04LTS installations to 20.04 when the
first point release is there, and my first impression when reading this
thread is that it should be possible to install some compatibility
packages to run applications / services with classic init scripts. Have
you looked into this option?

On a sidenote: in my opinion the time has come to seriously consider
using LMS in a container when running it on regular Linux installations
based upon Ubuntu f.e.. I know the community over here is already busy
with it and although I know it is not ready for prime yet, I strongly
think it is the way forward for LMS for that type of installations.

Tonight I have done an upgrade from Xubuntu 18.04 to 20.04 on one of my

running without issues or manual Linux configuration. It can also be

So I guess the OP's system is indeed missing some compatibility INIT

A full LMS rescan on Ubuntu 18.04 has never worked on my machine either.
There are few threads of this subject on this forum without a solution.
I think it is a bug.

When you have a 'hanging' full rescan you must kill all LMS processes
manually behore restarting LMS. Aborting via the webgui of LMS doesn't
work.

My workaround for rescanning is choose the 'look for new and changed
media files'.

Hopefully it is solved after upgrade to version 20.04.

LMS 7.9.3 has been running on Xubuntu 20.04 for a few months now,
without issues (I still have to test all library scan function however).
I don't use custom start scripts, only a manually added line to
/etc/rc.local because LMS is started before the network is up. This has
been an issue since the day Ubuntu started using Upstart and nowadays
Systemd instead of classic init-scripts. It might be necessary to first
enable /etc/rc.local on your system depending on your configuration.

Code:

  # 07/05/2015: added logitechmediaserver restart due to incompatibilities with
upstart

  /etc/init.d/logitechmediaserver restart

[SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] File location of playlists

2020-10-06 Thread zordaz

I have a perhaps simple question, but so far haven't found the
solution:
When creation a new playlist in LMS 7.9.3 the playlist m3u-file itself
is apparently not saved in the configured playlist location, but
somewhere else.
Only my older playlists files (more than a year old) can be found in the
configured location.

When using the 'locate' command via linux CLI no file with the newly
created playlist name is found. I only find several m3u files in
/var/lib/squeezeboxserver/prefs/ with generated names, which seems the
active playlists for the players in my house.

So where can I find my new playlist-files?

Tnx. I indeed discovered a permission issue with the playlist directory.

playlist is visible and works without a clear warning that something is
wrong with the underlying files/directories.

I stumbled upon this by accident because my children complained about
'disappearing playlists', which at first I didn't understand at all.
Therefore imho this is a bug and not a feature.

LMS is running OK here on Xubuntu 20.04. I always try to stick with the
defaults, so I don't think there is a structural issue with LMS as
described in github.

The only problems I am having are old (and have been around for years):
1) Since Upstart and Systemd are used in Debian/Ubuntu, LMS by default
is started before the network is up, which causes issues with thinks
like online radio stations, Spotify etc. My /etc/rc.local workaround is
fine, but not very nice. A structural solution would be better.
2) Full library rescan doesn't work since Ubuntu 18.04, it results in a
hanging scan process. Incremental scans works fine, even with an empty
database.
For both issues several threads can be found on this forum without a
proper solution.

As upstart is not used anymore in Ubuntu in favor of systemd, the effort
in solving this should indeed be put into a systemd unit file. As I am
not a coder or scripter I was never able to solve it properly myself, so
hopefully somebody can come up with something which can be incorporated
in the official LMS packages.

This issue is probably not that general and might be related to my own
configuration. On the other hand, I tend to use defaults and are having
this scan issues on more than one Xubuntu 18.04 (and later)
installations.

It might be a permission thing, but then: why does an incremental scan
works fine? And I can't remember any change in permissions when
upgrading from 16.04 to 18.04 two years ago.

Because of a post in

I have resurrected this old thread and tested a full rescan on Xubuntu
20.04 last night. It still doesn't work here, the scan hangs after
scanning the music files (is hanging for 12 hours now). Scanner.log and
server.log doesn't give much info, but I can post it here if needed. Is
logging with more detail possible?

As posted earlier: an incremental scan works fine and is finished within
a few minutes.

I am running LMS 7.9.3 on a Intel Dual Core mini PC with 16GB ram and
approx 80GB free diskspace, in the past it run on a system with 8GB Ram.
That should not be the bottleneck.

I will trigger a full rescan with detailed logging later.

After disabling the video/image scanner the full scan indeed works
again. The video/image scanner seems related to the uPnP/DLNA Media
Interface plugin, which I have used in the past, but not anymore. It
this plugin enabled by default/out of the box?

One question remains of course: why does the incremental scan works
fine? The root cause isn't found yet, but might be related to the
plugin.

Is it worth digging into this deeper? If so: I am willing to help/test.
It will probably mean experimenting with the now-by-default-disabled
uPnP/DLNA plugin as well.

Can you please clarify your problem in more detail? Because the .deb

needed for LMS. So I think you mean something else.

Do you get errors when installing? Do you get other messages? Or do you

Yep, that's the relevant thread. A few years ago the official repos were
closed down due to issues to maintain them.
Personally I still miss the good-old Debian-repo because it was a
perfect (and still preferable) way to integrate the updates within your
os and package manager.
The current approach is workable though.

And when using Docker with a LMS container you are still able to use an
automatic update mechanism with f.e. Watchtower.

I remember trying setting up a Debian repo/PPA for LMS myself, but
simply didn't have the time to figure it all out. I think the same
should be possible for Yum. It is all community effort over here, so the
main constraint is time/resources from the members involved.

Is this bug already solved in other branches? Can't find it in the Git

manually for updates via the plugin page.

Indeed, nothing to sweat about. But I don't visit the plugin page that

Understandable, especially for 7.7. But what about the 7.8 branch?
Currently I don't see a future for that branch. On most platforms
-within one or two years- it simply won't work anymore is my expectation
(same for 7.7 btw).

Once upon a time I build several Linux binaries&packages myself, I know
it can be a hassle Is there a reason why this is something you must
do solely? I mean, there still is a decent community around over here...
