Since I've been using different search terms each time I don't know whether the caching improvements would have had any effect in my tests. Either way I've very pleased to have LMS working again! itm's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17437 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=105787 ___ Squeezecenter mailing list Squeezecenter@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/squeezecenter

Was there anything specific in 7.9 that might have improved search response times from a standing start? A lot has changed wrt. searches in 7.9. First of all it's now using a fulltext search index. I'm not sure whether this helps with performance or not. But there is improved caching, some optimizations to the SQL queries, too. -- Michael ___ Squeezecenter mailing list Squeezecenter@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/squeezecenter
Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Keep-awake suggestions for LMS on Windows Server?
I did upgrade to 7.9, and have now disabled the scheduled search script. Searches are still pretty quick, so the improvement must have been down to either the cache size setting or the old release (or a combination of the two of course). Was there anything specific in 7.9 that might have improved search response times from a standing start? itm's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17437 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=105787 ___ Squeezecenter mailing list Squeezecenter@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/squeezecenter

Is there a good reason why you're still running version 7.7.5? That's a very old version now. Update your system to LMS 7.7.9 and you'll see some significant performance increases, as well as many usability enhancements and quite a few bug fixes. It's possible to keep your hard drive spinning just by scheduling a little batch file that writes a file to the drive, waits a couple seconds, then deletes it. I'm not sure that simply doing a directory listing on the drive will keep it alive, since directory listings are cached by the operating system. The only "speed up reason" for a scripted search is when you delete the cache folder and all the stuff has to be calculated to show up. After the cache is filled - and you always use the same scripted search terms there is no further improvement. Running a scripted search als causes the disk with the db is used and wake up - on your setup the d is stored in the OS drive not in the external - so this isnt helping you eather. IMHO the speed up is only caused by using more ram for lms. Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Keep-awake suggestions for LMS on Windows Server?
So far so good. Today's "first search of the day" returned results in less than 10 seconds, with no timeouts. Whether the improvement was due to the scripted searches running at regular intervals, or the change to the cache size setting, isn't clear. Many thanks for all your input - I now have a workable LMS setup again (I hope!) itm's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17437 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=105787 ___ Squeezecenter mailing list Squeezecenter@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/squeezecenter
Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Keep-awake suggestions for LMS on Windows Server?
Thanks for all the feedback - some really useful stuff. I've changed the cache size setting as recommended. I've also spent a couple of hours investigating the Squeezebox CLI, and have worked out how to run a telnet/VBS job on a regular schedule to do an LMS search. I've had it running every 15 minutes for the last couple of hours. So far all of my searches have responded in a few seconds, but the proof of the pudding will be the first search that I try tomorrow morning (I have the first "dummy" search scheduled to go at 8am). If I don't see a significant improvement I'll look into HDParm to see if I can keep the USB drive "warm". If all of that fails then I guess a hardware solution will be the next thing - a decent internal HDD for the music folder and possibly an SSD for the O/S as well. That's an altogether pricier solution of course! itm's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17437 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=105787 ___ Squeezecenter mailing list Squeezecenter@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/squeezecenter

During that time I could hear the -internal- > drive of the server getting hammered (i.e. not the LMS data USB drive). > I have a large collection (90k tracks, 6k albums). Yep, the OS drive contains the database itself. SSD is a Very Good Idea!! > The machine is an Intel Q6600 2.4GHz, with 4Gb RAM, running Win Server > 2008. There's nothing much else running on it. Q6600, whilst still a nice bit of kit, is a bit old now. The area it shows its age the most is random memory access (no on-chip memory controllers, plus DDR2 RAM). If you're worried about it, totally recommend a hardware refresh. Perl and database searching is all about pointer chasing and random memory access. Occasionally you can stumble on a HP Microserver for 100 UKP, or at least aim for anything with DDR3 and Nehalem or later CPU core. Second thing is a USB HDD (USB2 is likely on a Q6600) will limit the IOPS you can sustain. Finally, for the spin-down stuff (I agree with your diagnosis), you can use the windows version of HDPARM: http://disablehddapm.blogspot.co.uk/ Please note I've not tested this as I run it under Linux so be careful ... drmatt's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=59498 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=105787 ___ Squeezecenter mailing list Squeezecenter@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/squeezecenter

In addition to what has been said: check out the USB drive's manufacturer web site for some control/utilities software that might allow to set the sleep mode. reinholdk's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=36070 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=105787 ___ Squeezecenter mailing list Squeezecenter@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/squeezecenter

I've also noticed that, after the first search, subsequent searches are really quick (less than 5 seconds). Is is possible to script a search command which can be sent to LMS on a regular basis to keep it "fresh"? [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] Keep-awake suggestions for LMS on Windows Server?
I'm running LMS v7.7.5 on Windows Server 2008. I find that whenever I try to access my library for the first time each day the request times out, presumably because the HDD has gone into sleep mode and is taking time to spin up. I was wondering whether anyone had any ideas for keeping the LMS server active, so that it remains response to LMS requests from clients at all times? itm's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17437 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=105787 ___ Squeezecenter mailing list Squeezecenter@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/squeezecenter
