Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] What OS do you recommend for the LMS
Another vote for debian: it is ported to a lot of platforms. So basically you can take your setup and config files on an Intel VM and re-deploy that on an ARM machine, or the other way around. Go with VortexBox. It's optomized to run as a SqueezeBox server and have everything pre-installed. You can even upgrade to the latest squeezebox by pressing the upgrade button in the web user interface. Saves time and "command line poking" you get squeezebox server that always works. rip, tag, get cover art All you do is insert the CD! http://vortexbox.org agillis Lead Developer VortexBox agillis's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=21140 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=107761 ___ Squeezecenter mailing list Squeezecenter@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/squeezecenter
Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] What OS do you recommend for the LMS
I'd have to admit to being biased by history.. Debian has for a long, long time had a far superior package management system to any of the redhat variants. I'd always choose a Debian based setup over a centos or fedora for this reason alone. It comes down to the quality of curation of the online repositories in my eyes. The second reason is that a base Debian install is *tiny* and comes with nothing at all, so the ethos is very clear - install only what you need, when you need it. Redhat offers minimal installs too but it's not a default choice for redhat admins. -Transcoded from Matt's brain by Tapatalk- -- Hardware: 3x Touch, 1x Radio, 2x Receivers, 1 HP Microserver NAS with Debian+LMS 7.9.0 Music: ~1300 CDs, as 450 GB of 16/44k FLACs. Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] What OS do you recommend for the LMS
The distros build around LMS (Vortexbox, Daphile) usually include all kinds of stuff, like SW players or clever ripping programs, but my experience from Vortexbox is that it feels a bit "monolithic" and I do believe they work best when running on "bare metal". As long as it's just LMS you want and none of the other stuff I'm not sure it's the most practical solution. For running LMS in a VM I'd stick with something vanilla and just make a minimal install. LMS is available as Debian or RedHat packages, picking a distro that stays true to it's heritage in either of those camps should make installation and maintenance easier. CentOS and Debian have been mentioned in this thread, both seem like excellent candidates, or why not Ubuntu LTS. No need to be at the bleeding edge. alfista's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32396 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=107761 ___ Squeezecenter mailing list Squeezecenter@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/squeezecenter

If exclusively for LMS, I'd take a look at 'Daphile' (https://www.daphile.com/#overview). Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] What OS do you recommend for the LMS
I run on LMS on a Mac and have had no real issues. I also believe mherger develops on a Mac so if you use any of his excellent plugins (typically his spotty plugin) then it tends to work with minimal manual steps. odw199's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=15387 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=107761 ___ Squeezecenter mailing list Squeezecenter@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/squeezecenter

Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] What OS do you recommend for the LMS
I've never had trouble with the Debian builds.. but the dedicated OS images seem to be focussing on raspberry pi rather than x86. An OVA would be nice, but I'm not aware of one. -Transcoded from Matt's brain by Tapatalk- -- Hardware: 3x Touch, 1x Radio, 2x Receivers, 1 HP Microserver NAS with Debian+LMS 7.9.0 Music: ~1300 CDs, as 450 GB of 16/44k FLACs. [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] What OS do you recommend for the LMS
Hi, at the moment I have an installation of LMS 7.9.1 on a QNAP 412, but the response time is horrible and I want to switch it to my VMware infrastructure. Is there "the" OS for LMS? Maybe the resource friendly one or the one with the easiest upgrade path and configuration? Any suggestions? Or just tell me why you use the OS you have now...
