Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] LMS 7.9 Nightly stops working after some time

2017-05-18 Thread deadushka

Hi,

When I tried to download LogitechMediaServer-7.9.1-1494667952.exe from
http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/?ver=7.9 my antivirus (ESET
NOD32 ver. 9) reported:

modyfied Generik.GMJBLPB trojan;
connection dropped;

Does anybody else have this issue or is it just false alarm?

I wouldn't even say this is a vulnerability. If you leave the door open,
then anyone can enter your home. Is this a vulnerability in your door's
design? No. It's wrong use :-).

That said: there's no doubt LMS wasn't designed to be secure.

opened up to the internet, why is that for the Hues?

It's not the Hues. It's anything. Nowadays I'd recommend not to expose
anything to the internet unless you know exactly what you're doing.
Unless you know your systems are all up to date, latest patches of
everything installed etc. And you can almost bet this is never the case
for consumer electronics.

Worst case they can only switch lights on and of, or is it possible to
corrupt the bridge that way?

Worst case they know about a vulnerability you (and Philips) don't know
about, which allows them to do anything they want on your device.
Imagine another bug in the web server used which allows installing
executables on that bridge.

Even simpler with LMS: one of its "vulnerabilities" is the ability to
install plugins through the web UI. Such a plugin can do _anything_ in
the context of the user LMS is running under. On Windows this often is a
service user which has access to all/most files of the system without
anyone being logged in. A hacker could easily install a stupid, simple
bot as part of your LMS installation.

Be imaginative, a security hole opens other opurtunities . That's the
first mistake assuming that everyone's uses the software as intended and
gives it sane inputs .
A flawed IOT (internet of things ) could give away for example your wifi
password etc . Like some so called smart lightbulbs actually do .

For example script injection only works because someone assumed that in
a field in a web form marked "name" 100% user would actually just write
thier name and not for example paste in code snippets :) and watch the
fun .

- Picture.Gallery

But strangely enough,__they_always_get_re-installed_, even after
disabling "Auto Plugin update" (I work with a dutch version) or after
removing the URL with extra storage space for plugins.

Even stranger, the plugin detects al lot of my picture folders = Gallery
Paths (not Always the same) and start collecting zillions of my photos,
eventually choking in one of them (my guess)

The skin is then changed from standard to classic and the server keeps
crashing.

As long as the plugins remain uninstakled, the system is stable as a
rock, and then suddenly it decides to reinstall them and the system
crashes.

I hope this sheds a different light on the problem. I am struggling with
it for months now, and I am loosing my patience a bit :D.

I hope you can find it or give me some tips to prevent the two plugins

You configured your router to make LMS available to the world. Most
likely you did so to be able to access your music from the office or
similar. Unfortunately not only you at the office can access your LMS,
but me, too. And all the rest of the internet.

I use a program called Muso (

I need the Cache folder in a location accessible by an outside program.
Anything else you can think of that would allow me to solve this issue,

Not saying this is the cause, but my experience with PLC (powerline) has
been constantly terrible over years. I have 4 places that have been
equipped with all generations, from 85Mbs to 2000Mbs and no brand has
ever showed good stability, at least as soon as you have more than 3
(sometimes 2) plugs. Worse has been when UDP frames are used, that's a
total disaster with regular "blackout" of a few seconds. I hate these
devices, but at least they forced me to test some of my plugins more
resilient to network temporary outages and lots of dropped frames :)

The cache folder is defined as a subdirectory of the install directory
of the package. This means if you want to change the cache folder
location to a different share, you would have hard code the path to the
cache folder in several files. I don't see why this would be beneficial

Have you checked the storage manager in DSM? Is the information of the
first disk OK? Install Storage Analyser - not the same as the Storage
manager(!) - and run a report. See if that gives you some more
information about this issue.

No, it was not Streaming at that time - but I had the logfile-Viewer
open in my browser which refreshes every couple of seconds.

In the meantime I had another server-stopping - Logfile was full of
Errors from MusicIP-Plugin not being reachable, which it was at that
time. I have the Impression that the Network/http-core of LMS just stops
working. Any Idea on how to debug there?

As I mentioned the cachedir likely is part of the startup command. How
to change this, I don't know. You'd have to ask in a Synology specific
thread.

(And then I'm not even sure this is the actual problem...)

which exact setting should I change?

Before you do anything you do a backup. But you've already got one for
sure, don't you? :-)

Then search for "cachedir". Change that value to the new folder, delete
the symlink, restart.

If it re-creates the old cache folder, then that value is likely
overridden by the startup script. Where that is defined on your system,
I don't know...

Ok, through trial and error, I found the server.prefs file in
/volume1/@appstore/SqueezeCenter/prefs and copied it to a folder
accessible by Windows. I opened the file with Notepad on my laptop and
it looks like a mess, frankly. So, before I screw things up royally,
which exact setting should I change?

Thanks again.

The only folder I have Music on is /volume1/Media/Music and that's where
LMS and MusicIP are both set to look. Also, muso reports the correct
number of songs as well. The only one that shows incorrect numbers is
the LMS web interface.

Also, while I have your attention, there's a large discrepancy in the
amount of tracks reported by LMS. It tells me that I have 26,152 songs
whereas the real number should be 24,478. I know the real number is this
because MusicIP tells me so, as well as muso, which is a program I use

Here's my suggestion: instead of having a symlink to the actual folder,
why don't you change the cachedir value in the server.prefs or the

Sorry about that. I still have 247 GB available but that's out of 12 TB
total. So yes, I'm running out of space with over 98% full. Does that
matter?

That should be fine. But are you sure this is the partition where the
cache lives? Most NAS devices have a partition you usually don't get to
see, but on which system data like this is stored. This partition is
only small, compared to the accessible data partition.

Where does the cache live, and what does "df -ah" tell you?

MusicIP is running on the same machine on port 10002 an is operational
at the Moment. The issue occured in the past as well when MusicIP was
disabled.
LMS CLI works, "serverstatus" Returns:

LMS is obviosly not totally dead, currently my Radio stream started at
~6:25 still runs but WebUI, other Players and iPeng does not work.

telnet yourserver 9090

(replace "yourserver" with its IP address if you can't ping it by name).
If that connects, then LMS is still kind of alive. Then type eg.
"serverstatus" followed by the enter key. Would that respond?

No, LMS is really dead or at least unresponsive. No matter whether I try
the WebUI from a remote machine or on the LMS-Server itself. All
squeezeboxes get a connection error - only prevouisly started
radio-streams keep on running.
Is there any other way to interact with the server? Can I get status
Infos of the Server trough CLI? If so, how? :)

As all signs suggest network problems I wrote a poweshell-script that
pings all my squeezeboxes from the machine running LMS and logging all
lost packets with a timestamp. As all my squeezeboxes are on wifi there
will probably some lost packages, I hope to see what log entries
corelate to those lost packets.
Apart from that, even if a sequeezebox loses connection to the server
for a couple of miliseconds - why is the server dying on that
disconnection?

Michael, could you instruct me on what exactly to log in LMS to nail
down that issue? If I set everything to debug I'll get a huuuge logfile
as it takes 1-2 days for the issue to reappear.

Still having the same issue, last time it took about three days until
the issue reappeared. And again, I had the "request not
dispatchable"-Errors in my log.

These messages usually mean that a player has lost connection to the
server, but some client (web UI, mobile app, whatever) was still
requesting information for that player. Sounds like a network issue
between your player and your server.

"Can't connect to remote server - timed out waiting for data" either
that server is dead (which I can't imagine for TuneIn), or there's a
network problem.

I know, despite all the signs: there's not network problem. Really?

Still having the same issue, last time it took about three days until
the issue reappeared. And again, I had the "request not

If I find no solution the only thing that can do is to restart LMS every
night by script - but I'd like to pinpoint the root cause and not just
cure the symptoms.

Any more ideas from you guys? Any goot ideas on what to log on top of
the default logging settings?

As before, there was no Network outage - and even if there was one the

Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] LMS 7.9 Nightly stops working after some time

2017-02-13 Thread Michael Herger

First song is OK but when it come to second song, the script crash and
no informations about the artwork ?

I'm not even sure it has to do with the artwork of any track: in the log
file you posted it crashed returning a player icon.

Do you need perl version or w10 version ?

Windows (Perl is the same for all Windows versions, as it's part of the
build).

We've seen an increasing number of "Perl interpreter failed at ...

What makes the least sense to me is the order of the messages logged:
the "Cached ..." entry is created _after_ line 165 - where the script

event, if we've crashed already?!?

I'll have to run some tests.

Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] LMS 7.9 Nightly stops working after some time

2017-02-09 Thread constantint

Hi guys,
I had pretty the same issue after upfgrading to 7.9.0. Logfile throws
the same errors, web-ui isn't available any more etc.
Checkking top, squeezeserver ran svereal (10-20) processes which caused
haevy load on the system. The only way I coudl handle it, was purging
(!) the LMS and downgrading to 7.8.1 again like:
- stopping server
- killing all processes
- reboot without squeezeserver
- purge the server with "sudo apt-get remove --purge
logitechmediaserver"
- remove manually "/var/lib/squeezeboxserver" as it was blocked for
some kind of reason.
- then reinstall 7.8.1

Just removing 7.9.0 and reinstalling 7.8.1 did NOT work - same problem.
So be sure to completely deinstall all files.

So far so good, up and running again without trouble. I haven't
activated any other then the default plugins jet. On the broken system I
ran the 3rd part spotify-plugin from Triode and the Shairport2 plugin
from disaster123.

I run a ubuntu 16.4 LTS system, my cllients are three raspberrries with
squeezelite on rasbian jessie.

I will fiddle about the plugins and let you know.
Cheers!
C

seems you run some oldish plugins.

Re: [SlimDevices: SqueezeCenter] LMS 7.9 Nightly stops working after some time

2017-02-07 Thread ElwoodSC

I just unplugged the network cable for a short time to simulate a
network glitch - but that didn't stop the Server from working... I know
that unplugging a cable is different from packetloss trough a faulty
cable - but I'm quite sure that I don't have a network Problem with my
Server. There a many Services running on my Server (Hyper-V Host with
~10 running VMs) that do not Show any anomalies.
I now have disabled nearly all the Default plugins to a Minimum set of
needed plugins and will continue to watch what happens.

I'm still searching for:
- hints on which logging Topics I should set to debug to get more
relevant Information
- Nightly 7.9 builds from Mid 2016 (or, of course if available, any
other 7.9 build from that time)

Regards,
Florian

I was using my Homeplugs (Homeplug is the name of the standard aka
Powerline) as an example of a "network outage" not necessarily your
issue.
"Network outage" just means connection from server to router and
consider all possibilities (e.g faulty cable, faulty NIC). A way to see
if problem is network realted would be to check if any other application
on the server suffered a network "glitch" at the same time - to
defintively test you could set "ping" going and correlate LMS outage
with "ping" gaps/failures.

I've seen the missing string messages as well an could not make any sense from
them. LMS is freshly installed and configured with the LMS nightly from Feb.
1st - I'm of the Impression that there is something broken in the current
nightlies. The error occured about 5 months ago - at that time I already was on
nightlies.[/quote wrote:

By homeplug you mean Powerline-Adapters? If so that would not be
applicable as my Server is connected trough Ethernet to my
internet-router, a FritzBox 7490.

Does anyone have nightly 7.9 build from around mid 2016?

cheers,
Flo

Network outage could mean just no network connection from LMS server to
players etc. For example, my LMS server uses a Homeplug connection and
this drops out every so often ( a known but unresolved Homeplug issue)
and there are similar "Unable to get players" messages logged when that
happens.

That said, there are al ot of missing string message for DEEZER, SPOTIFY
etc which I would not have expected. It make em think there is something
odd in your installation.

2017-02-07 Thread ElwoodSC

No, there was no Network outage at that time - I think, I even watched
Amazon Prime at that time so Internet was available as well. And even if
there was a network problem LMS should not stop working, right?
I'm a little clueless on which logging areas I should enable to pinpoint
my issue - any tips for that?

The plugins are not yet sorted out, as I reinstalled two days ago they
are still on default.

Looks like there was a network issue at that time. When it happens again
check if you can reach the internet from your LMS server.

BTW, if you don't need the iTunes plugin, disable it.
