I wonder what other uncatalogued parts exist

RH also made a Baldwin valve chest casting which fits over the
squarish and rather model-like standard cylinders. It was made for
the SRRL 24, but they will sell them to you for your standard RH
cylinders (at least, they would at one time).

What does the Ruby have in the way of piston seals?

Haven't looked inside yet, but the usual is Viton o-rings.

-vance-

Just a note here regarding seals, o-ring or otherwise. Having just worked on an Aster
Baldwin, that
interestingly enough seems to have die cast zamac cylinders, I was surprised to find
that Aster used 2 cup
type seals back-to-back for piston seals.

Re: viton seals. Note of caution. If the viton ever gets over heated as in a fire, it
will has a by-product that is
really nasty, hydrogen floride.

I thought Roundhouse used a silicone o-rings in their later locos. The early
Asters,Schools and such, used
graphited string which seemd to work well although a bit more work initially.

I believe I have the right word. It is the device they put inside of a vein
or artery, and expand it with a balloon, to open up the vein if it is
clogged. The Wire EDM cuts a special pattern of holes, slots in the needle
so that it will hold its circular shape as it is expanded. Nearest example I
can think of is the Chinese finger trap, push it together and it expands.
The comments at the time were that the cuts, holes were all computer designed
and controlled as they were getting cut. There was about half of the
original metal gone. Very impressive to say the least

You guys were talking about the valve gear and desired improvements.
Norm Saley, Orlando, has modified his Sammie. He's moved the eccentrics
inside the frames and added rocker arms to get the motion to the valves.
This makes for a much improved locomotive, visually. You can see a photo of

Must have got the idea from Tom Cooper, The two pre '90s Merlins I own
have the same type of pistons-teflon or a similar material and there
appears to be no wear at all. Water is an adequate lubricant except for the
piston valves. Even when I burned up the cylinders (not uncommon for me!)
on the Hunslet the pistons were OK.

By the way Gary--what are you doing with a Baldwin--I thought you were

I'm an old sailor as well and the rhyme used to be:

"Green to green and red to red, perfect safety go ahead."

Fine if you've vessels moving in any direction, but trains run on a
fixed track.

What about red at the front and green at the rear. If you see a green
light then you know it's moving away from you and you're safe. Vice
versa for red - jump out of the way!

Just my five pence worth.

Re: Wood Cab for Sammie

2000-03-25 Thread VR Bass

Dave,
thanks for the additional info. If it involves "too much" work to
replace the original cab, then it's not going to be something most
people will undertake, and those who could would be much more
likely to build their own replacement cab instead of buying one. It
sounds as if removing the RH cab will also entail bracing the back
end of the saddle tank somehow, as well, which would require
metal fabrication on my part (adds considerably to the expense) or
the owner's (most have proven unwilling to learn sheetmetal skills
on demand, for some reason :-).

Plus, I'd rather not start drilling holes in your (or any other borrowed)
engine just to see how the cab would all have to go together. If
someone else who owns the engine wants to do so and send me
the specs and dimensions, I can easily draw it up. But I got a Ruby
first, and can't spend the money on another engine (which fills a
basically identical slot in my roster) right now. So, it'll have to wait, I
guess.

thanks,
