Welcome to the group. Being in the Bay Area you have
the advantage a group of active live steam
participants very close at hand. Literally a
telephone call away. A couple are up in the North Bay
area. The local group meets quite regularly. Plan on
attending the steam-up in Sacramento, introduce
yourself to anyone and ask for help. After Sacramento
support will still be available. I do not run
alcohol, find other uses for the stuff, so can not
help you source, steam oil is readily available. I am
not familiar with San Anselmo outlets but Talbots in
San Mateo, The Train Shop in Santa Clara carry steam
oil, you can also order from Sulfur Springs, see their
website. Don't for get you will need a machine oil for
the various moving parts. I use 3in1 (Blue label)that
is available in almost every hardware store.

Hi Jonathan & Ken!
Living across the country in Maine, I can't be of much help to you way
out west!
But, welcome to the group, and the hobby. I expect you will become
acquainted with some of the nicest folks you will ver meet, through this
hobby. If you don't understand some of the technical terms or processes,
don't be afraid to ask, somebody here will have the answer for you!
And...if we don't know, we will make something up. (just kidding...of
course!)

 Welcome Ken,

What Aster loco do you own? There will be many folks who wil be willing to
advise and assist in Sacramento so please come. I have several Asters and
would be happy to confuse you as as much as anyone!

I have a special source of alcohol (no list-not tanqueray in this case!)
so I'll let someone else advise you on that. Syringes can be obtained
through Sulphur Springs which is an excellent source, they can also provide
steam oil. In the event you don't have a fan for raising steam, they can
help you on that too, I believe.

There other very qualified steamers closer to SF than me who can offer
advice.

Congrats on joining our hobby.

Geoff.

Dear Ken,

Don't worry about your doubts on getting your "new" Aster streaming. In
Sacramento everyone will be more than happy to give you a helping hand and
they will explain/show you everything you should know. I personally have
found that the live steam boys (nuts) to be the most congenial and helpful
people I have ever met through a hobby. And that includes Harley
motorcycles, ham radio, photography, and antique clocks. Have fun and
remember that you can't see the flames of burning alcohol.

No, Dale, not impractical at all. The Locomotive Works has a plan
for an 0-scale Pacific in live steam (castings are also available from
them). http://www.locoworks.com

There was a guy back in the late 1940s who did a live steam
engine in 0 scale using dry ice as the fuel!

New to live steam

1999-09-20 Thread Dale Wilde

Hello everyone: I'm new to this list and live steam, but not new to model
railroading. I have modeled HO for years and recently, well five years
ago, shifted to O scale. I started looking at live steam modeling about
six months ago, the major impetus was the purchase of a Smithy
lathe/mill/drill, coupled with the desire to move outdoors where I have
space to spare. I've been primarily arm-chairing live steam at this point,
I have the back issues of SitG covering Charlie Mynhier's locomotive
construction series and think I'll start by building that 2-4-0.
Ultimately, I would like to work on an O scale loco. I've seen very little
work mentioned using 1/48 scale, is this too small to be practical? It
would be great to be able to use my O scale rolling stock and possibly
kitbash an O scale locomotive kit like the Babbitt Atlantic to live steam.

I'm an electrical engineer, retired in 1990 from Los Alamos National
Laboratory. I live in Santa Fe, NM.
