Re: Pic of the New Accucraft Shay
Hello Everyone, Thanks for the information on the projected price of the Shay. Sounds like another engine that will lend itself very well to bashing. YEE-HAW! Pass the saw! Later, Trent P.S. - Tom and Kevin: There's you another Southern word (YEE-HAW) to work on for the next DH.
Re: Pic of the New Accucraft Shay
Regarding the new Accucraft Shay: Having seen the prototype a few weeks ago at the BAGRS show I can, without a doubt, tell you that it is worth the asking price. It is not a simple little 0-4-0 like the Ruby. It has a real "T" or "boot" style boiler which is more costly to produce than the standard type as used on the Ruby. The crank shaft is also more costly to build. As previously mentioned the bevel gears also represent more cost on the makers part as do the UV joints required to transmit the power to the trucks. I beleave that this Shay represents excellent value and should be selling like hot cakes on a cold morning as soon as they are available. GaryB

I'm curious which ones you're thinking of (esp. the geared ones, which require a lot more precision work on the trucks). > Of course, this is all speculation (and rumor mongering) that the shay is > based on the basic design of the Ruby! It uses the cylinders from the Ruby, but beyond that it seems to be a totally new design. Leaving aside the issue of manufacturing tolerances, the basic Ruby [cylinder] design seems to me a very good one. It's inexpensive to manufacture, it's easy to adjust and it seems to work well when the tolerances are right. But they may be running into the same limit I found with my "budget" boxcar kit. The basics of any product will cost about the same to produce, and the savings in leaving off details are surprisingly inconsequential. I guess the big question is, "Did they get the basic dimensions right, so you can turn it into a detailed scale model?" regards, -vance- Vance Bass Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA Small-scale live steam resources: http://www.nmia.com/~vrbass
RE: Pic of the New Accucraft Shay
Tony, You are probably correct about the majority of them being kit-bashed, however, with the lack of detail and the reported "Ruby" basic design it is built on, how will they justify a price tag of $1300? I will have to think long and hard about this one before I commit. If it were say between $700 and $900. Sign me up today! There are far better and more detailed engines available in the $1200 - $1400 range than this shay! Of course, this is all speculation (and rumor mongering) that the shay is based on the basic design of the Ruby! If it isn't true, then maybe it will be a winner! Re: Pic of the New Accucraft Shay
Discussed price is in the $1300 - $1400 range for a one up. Price will vary depending upond dealer. There also has been discussion on this thread of a group buy through a single point that could reduce the price. mp --- Trent Dowler <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Has anyone heard a projected price for the Shay? > Nice looking engine, but it > doesn't appear to be detailed to the point that it > demands a high price. > > Later, > Trent > > > "Charles W. Has anyone heard a projected price for the Shay? Nice looking engine, but it doesn't appear to be detailed to the point that it demands a high price. Later, Trent "Charles W.
