RE: OT: RE RE etc. Steamup timing WAS Re: PCLS web site up ...

2000-09-01 Thread Susan Parker

Hi.

The month of May would be better for us as we are planning to come over to
the States during that time next year. We are already planning on staying
in Sacramento for a few days (research at the CSRRM), plus I want to crawl
around a few locos with a measuring tape, so the opportunity to combine it
with a steamup would be most excellent.

We were in Sacramento last year's July ('99) and it was very hot (for us
Brits). So much so we had to buy hats! (I got a nice Panama from a Front St
store). Indoors was okay though.

Best wishes,
Susan.

P.S.
Does anyone have the formula for calculating the "tractive effort" for a
live steam locomotive?

Susan,

Go back to sslive steam files--messages from Michael Martin and Mike
Chaney--Feb 18/00. Let me know if you can't find these and I'll copy for
you,

Geoff.

Agreed. Having spoken to Richard about this previously, I should have
pointed out that he is probably the first one willing to make compromises
on this issue.

Personal comment. Thank you for the dialog over this
matter. Points of consideration were enlightening. As
to date, July is not a viable month for me, May is.
While only able to attend for a part of one day at the
Pleasanton venue, I do hope to spend at least two days
in 2001. I look forward to an event in Sacramento and
like others will spend some time at the Railroad
museum which I tend to visit bi-annually.

So lets not shoot down the idea until we have heard
 the whole story.

I hope I'm not perceived to be in that camp. Not the
 case. Also,
there is no "whole story" yet hence the requirement
 for feedback on
ideas to improve the event. I personally think that
 Sacramento will
make a better venue for the event than the bay area
 just on the
 airport/travel front, among other reasons.

Also, the operation assumption is that the event
 moves, with
Sacramento the most likely destination. I know for a
 fact that we do
not have a suitable bay area venue available to us
 this coming
spring. I should have make this assumption clear in
 my list of
 pros/cons.

Dave brings up a good point; it was my understanding
 in conversations
with Kevin that the venue he found is equally
 available/viable in May
or July. That's an important point to clarify.

Grover, who's whining? I miss your point. To the
 point; does it
matter to you if the event is in May or July?

Finally, you will likely agree with me that in many
 cases the written
word does not convey the meaning as well as a real
 conversation with
all the verbal/non-verbal cues that go with it. Let
 me state out
loud: I will completely support of any decisions
 that are made
relative to the steamup by PCLS and Kevin El
 Presidente. I am
extremely interested in seeing a major event on the
 west coast that
is sustainable for decades; I've invested time and
 money to try to
help make such a thing happen. I have opinions and
 will express them
but when decisions are made and it comes down to
 making this event
successful I will be there with full support. I
 can't wait to attend
the steamup in attendee/volunteer mode and spend
 more time with my
 friends at the event!

My next step is to contact all of the 2000 NSS
 attendees and let them
know that if they care one way or the other about
 dates to contact
Kevin or myself so that the feedback can be
 considered.

 Later!
