struts-user list spammed - RE: Improve your stepfamily life

2000-12-21 Thread Somdeth Souvanlasy

Looks like the some bastard added the struts-user mail list address to a
spam database.

If you look at the internet mail headers, it hit the struts-user list from
the following computer

...
Received: from zqn43X17V (1Cust124.tnt21.lax3.da.uu.net [63.28.123.124]) by
sem_mail.smkb.ac.il with SMTP (Microsoft Exchange Internet Mail Service
Version 5.5.2448.0)
...

Is there a way to remove the [EMAIL PROTECTED] address from
this list ?

Like annoying HTML repeats of what is in the text messages, usually
2 to 3 times as large (one message was 35 times as large as the
plain text version - lots of " "s for a table).

But then, if one person sends mail in HTML format, all Outlook users
who reply, even with HTML turned off, send in HTML format. I'd better
stop here before starting a flame war.

These don't actually use the local attribute in a Struts bean:message,
but come very close.

David Geary -

As you may know, Struts will automatically use the default locale for
the current user, so generally one would only use this to do something
like (excuse my French)

+ Parlez-Vous Francaise?
+ Do You Speak English?

Where each resource had it's own "Do you speak me" message. Usually,
the link would be used to reset the default locale, so that you would
not need to specify it in each bean:message.

Now the majordomo is waiting for a confirmation from struts-interest, which

Automatic/extended properties in Struts

2000-12-21 Thread Kevin Wang

I've made some changes in three files (attached and virus free :-) to let
Struts handle automatic/extended properties, ie properties that appears on
jsp but not defined by the actionForm bean.

It is based on 12/16 nightly build. Only simple properties are supported at
this time, as was the original nightly build. Tested on Orion 1.4. Watch
your server's System.out for extended properties... (printed from
ActionForm).

Let me know if you have problem getting them to work.

Re: How can I use a java variable that was defined in the enclosing template tag?

2000-12-21 Thread Hay Tran

Thanks Cedric for your help.

Does template:put can actually put an object other than String?
That is:
<% AClass aObject = new AClass(); %>
...

...

And, then, how are we going to get the boject back?

I guess that's where your proposal to extend the template tag comes in.

In any rate, I have a work around for now, which is to use the
request.setAttribute(...) and request.getAttribute(...)
to pass and retrieve objects between those files involved in the template.

It is not convenient, but, I guess that's what I have to do at the moment.

Again, many thanks for your help.

I'm in favor of banning attachments. We went though this on the JSP_INTEREST

misses them. Files can be hyperlinked from the messages to web sites, ftp

pretty annoying to people that don't have broadband anyway, especially when

I would find it disappointing if the list were to indiscriminately reject
all attachments. Many messages have sample code attached to them, and I find
that these are among the most valuable contributions to the list.

My employer's mail server, through which I receive the struts list, removes
all attachments with the .exe extension, and prevented this particular virus
from being transported. This could be done with a few other extensions as
well, such as .vbs; and others have suggested, a virus scanner could be run
over all attachments before mail is forwarded to the list.

At any rate, there are a number of solutions that stop short of banning
attachments altogether.

Geoff

I would find it disappointing if the list were to indiscriminately reject
all attachments. Many messages have sample code attached to them, and I find
that these are among the most valuable contributions to the list.

My employer's mail server, through which I receive the struts list, removes
all attachments with the .exe extension, and prevented this particular virus
from being transported. This could be done with a few other extensions as
well, such as .vbs; and others have suggested, a virus scanner could be run
over all attachments before mail is forwarded to the list.

At any rate, there are a number of solutions that stop short of banning
attachments altogether.

Best,
Geoff

I had
the same problem

look
for how many copies of struts.jar you have in your
classpath.

normally you should have struts.jar _only_in each
WEB-INF/lib of your application(s)

webapps
    application1

WEB-INF

lib

struts.jar

    application2

WEB-INF

lib

struts.jar
...

it
worked for us.

I've

struts_logic:iterate

2000-12-21 Thread Anand Joshi

Hi,
I am struts-user. I am trying to use id attribute of struts_logic:iterate
as a bean
But it gives me error in JSP as undefined variable when I try to use code
scriptlet as "if ( beanName instanceof SomeType) ..."
But struts:iterate allows me to use that ID as a bean and allows me to use
instanceof operator on it.
Can you throw some light why this would happen so?
and give me some link that describes advantages of logic iterate over
iterate.

Thanks

I'm totally confused. something must be terribly wrong with classpath or so. but don't ask me, I'm trying to fix it now for

two hours without any success.
Maybe somebody out there finds the error immediately.
By the way I'm using Tomcat 3.1.
The strange thing is, that I've set a couple of applications with Struts before.
Maybe it's really time for holiday :-))
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Re: How can I use a java variable that was defined in the enclosing template tag?

2000-12-21 Thread Cedric Dumoulin

  Hay,

You can't use a java variable defined in a page inside included page.
You need to define your variable in a scope (here request, but can
also be session or application).
An alternative to your problem could also be :
  <%String strToBeUsedByPageA = "Hello";%>

  and use

You can also have a look to my "extended template proposal" at
http=//gauss.ficsgrp.com/cdm. You will find more solutions to pass
values to
  an included template.

 Cedric

As an example, another solution to your problem is (with extended
templates) :
<%String strToBeUsedByPageA = "Hello";%>

  and use

  value = <%="strToBeUsedByPageA" />

Re: java.io.NotSerializableException again

2000-12-21 Thread Mikael Eriksson

Hi

I got the same problem, I had to make the following changes
(excerpt from a mail to Craig follows).

The change in MessageResourcesFactory is that I changed
the "setDefaultWriter" method to just set the writer to null.
I was not able to make the writer used to be serializable.
(It's a subclass of PrintWriter that did not have an appropriate
constructor and includes a ServletContext that was not serializable...)

So I lost logging, but at least I was able to get the example-app up
and running. Would love to see a serializable variant of the writer...

 Regards
 Mikael

Nothing in this letter is in any way BEA's official view on anything...
And so on

The classes I had to change was the following (from the 1216 build)

org.apache.struts.util.MessageResourcesFactory
Made the class Serializable (not sure if its really necessary)
Never allow setting of the defaultwriter, keeps it as null always

And the following classes where made Serializable:

All are in package org.apache.struts.action.
   Action
   ActionFormBean
   ActionFormBeans
   ActionForward
   ActionForwards
   ActionMapping
   ActionMappings
   ActionServlet

RE: A great Shockwave flash movie

2000-12-21 Thread Hines, Bill

I'm in favor of banning attachments. We went though this on the JSP_INTEREST
list. We started getting viruses, etc so attachments were banned and nobody
misses them. Files can be hyperlinked from the messages to web sites, ftp
sites, etc and downloaded that way. I would think that the attachments are
pretty annoying to people that don't have broadband anyway, especially when
some people insist on sending large files!

Best,
Geoff

Suggestion for tracking down non-existent forward mappings

2000-12-21 Thread Luke Taylor

Hi,

I keep running into problems where I return a particular "forward" from
an action, e.g.

return mapping.findForward("blah");

but have forgotten to add "blah" to struts-config for the action in
question (or have misspelt it, or added it to the wrong action 5etc.
etc.). The mapping then returns null and the performAction method of
ActionServlet does nothing. The end result is a blank page in the
browser and no messages anywhere in the logs. I'd been assuming that
something dreadful was going wrong deep in the bowels of my app-server
when in fact it was just a dumb mistake.

Would it be an idea to put in some debug logging to the effect that a
particular mapping hasn't been found?

All the best,

Luke.

Creating Wizards with struts 0.5

2000-12-21 Thread Rautenberg, Stefan

Hi all,

Using struts 0.5 in a Solaris/Jrun 3.0 environment, we got the
following problem:

We set up an input form in a wizard style with 9 different pages.
Each page should be able to lead to the next and previous page.
To do this each of those 9 pages has to submit it's form to the same
action and action form bean. Is this true ?

To recognize the actual page being submitted we need either a hidden
field ("actualPage = x").
Due to much data being submitted we need to submit the forms as
method=post.

And this is the problem:
Submitting the form using the struts:submit tag the corresponding
action and/or actionform isn't found.
Calling the action via javascript ("location.href =
AddEventTest.do?actualPage=x") both actionform and action is found, but the
input fields in the
Input form ("addEventActionForm") are not submitted.

 Our Form tag:

Our submit tag:
Next

Our action.xml entry:

Also a question is:
How does struts know which page caused a failure in the actionform's
validate method when there only one accessible input form is in this entry ?

We are still using struts 0.5 because our test with the 1.0 nightly
builds ran into a "DTD not found" message which we couldn' resolve yet.
Posting this in the mailing list earlier unfortunately brought no
answer :-(

However, the struts users guide tells about the possibility to
create such "wizard style" forms.

Any hints or help is appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Stefan

In HTML 4.01 a attribute "readonly" is specified for input fields of the
