[Sugar-devel] 0sugar status report

2010-02-16 Thread Aleksey Lim
Hi all,

I've finally managed to make some progress in 0sugar.

== Activities ==

Activities that are ready to try, they carry all 0sugar dependencies but
later updarting process will be like for regular 0install packages:

http://people.sugarlabs.org/~alsroot/tmp/CartoonBuilder-9.xo
http://git.sugarlabs.org/projects/cartoon-builder
uses toolkit/python dependency to use new toolbars on 0.82+

http://people.sugarlabs.org/~alsroot/tmp/Speak-12.xo
http://git.sugarlabs.org/projects/speak
uses toolkit/python dependency to use new toolbars on 0.82+
gst-plugins-espeak to not run execute espeak command(thus speed up
activity) on XO-1

http://people.sugarlabs.org/~alsroot/tmp/GComprisGeography-13.xo
this is just a sugar wrapper around 0install feed with new sugarized
GCompris-9's geography activity
http://services.sugarlabs.org/gcompris/geography.xml

Changes in activity developers workflow after adding services is
described here
http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/Documentation_Team/Services/Activity_Developers_Guide

== Services ==

There are several examples of services:

http://git.sugarlabs.org/projects/0sugar-packages
just a list of native packages that could be used as dependencies in
sugar services (but there are several services with that 0install
binaries, like vala, libgee and some packages that were built to run
GC-9 on XO-1).

http://git.sugarlabs.org/projects/toolkit
vala based sugar-toolkit replacement which was started for GC needs
but for now only toolkit/python is useful which contains new design
toolbars(pure python) for 0.82+ sugars.

http://git.sugarlabs.org/projects/gst-plugins-espeak (0.3 branch)
C based project which is accessible from service feed

http://git.sugarlabs.org/projects/gcompris (gcomprixogoo-sugar branch)
project with huge service spec file, for 100+ sub services
http://services.sugarlabs.org/gcompris/#Siblings

The initial info about packaging sugar services

[Sugar-devel] state of feature patches

2010-02-16 Thread Tomeu Vizoso
Hi,

in the review queue we currently have the following patches that
provide enhancements, as opposed to fixing bugs:

http://dev.sugarlabs.org/ticket/1458 - Write - export as PDF

This one liner should go in, brings good functionality with little risk.

http://dev.sugarlabs.org/ticket/1592 - enhanced color selector

Patch affects only the color selector, it's not big, but couldn't try
it because have not been able to find the corresponding patch for
sugar-toolkit. How bad do we want this in 0.88.0?

http://dev.sugarlabs.org/ticket/1659 - replace Xephyr with VNC

I think Sascha has made that the server is killed when the viewer is
closed, but the patch in trac doesn't seem to have been updated. I
think this is more of an invasive bugfix than a feature or
enhancement.

http://dev.sugarlabs.org/ticket/1680 - sugar-base: add sugar.dispatch.DbusSignal
http://dev.sugarlabs.org/ticket/1681 - use sugar.dispatch.DbusSignal
in sugar.datastore.datastore

I'm not sure why we need this.

http://dev.sugarlabs.org/ticket/1630 - Support for mobile broadband
provider database

Not too invasive, should affect only to the 3G feature. Patch not too
big, I don't know how much needed is this in the field.

Comments, corrections, etc?

Thanks,

Tomeu

Are you referring to the patch to xo-colors.py? It is attached to the
ticket (http://bugs.sugarlabs.org/attachment/ticket/1592/xocolor.py)?

[Sugar-devel] Release policy and upgrades of sugar on laptops

2010-02-16 Thread Urso Wieske
Hi

I have the follow question.
We are currently doing translation for THE language pap.
We are working hard to get THE job done for THE NeXT release of sugar.
At THE Same time we are going to place an order of olpc laptops which
shiuld be delivered by THE end of february or march. I have been told
that the XO 1.5 will be delivered.
Question: if version 0.84 is shipped with these laptops, is it
possible to upgrade the XO to the version of the next release of
April? Can someone tell me how this is done or where to get this
information?

Question 2:
If we really deliver our translations on February 28, will our
translations really be incorporated with the next release of April?
What's the current status of development? Is the software development
on schedule?
Question 3: we might still be translating on etoys (big file). Is it
possible to deliver after march 1st?

Thank you
Urso

Re: [Sugar-devel] Release policy and upgrades of sugar on laptops

2010-02-16 Thread Chris Ball
Hi Urso,

Question: if version 0.84 is shipped with these laptops, is it
possible to upgrade the XO to the version of the next release of
April? Can someone tell me how this is done or where to get this
information?

There's some confusion between XO releases and Sugar releases here.
Sugar releases happen every six months, and XO (OLPC OS) releases
happen less often -- they aren't strictly time-based, but major
releases have happened roughly once a year, and minor bugfix releases
happen as they're needed.

So, it's not the case that Sugar releases are incorporated into OLPC
releases immediately. (In fact, for the XO-1.5 we chose to use Sugar
0.84 even though Sugar 0.86 had been released before our final release
happened, because we wanted a Sugar release that had seen more time
for bugfixes.)

You should talk with OLPC directly about how to handle your particular
situation, but I expect that you'll need to update the machines with
your translations when they arrive; we can give you some pointers on
how to do that.

I would like to simulate the XO-1.5 on my XO-1, to see how my activities
perform on the XO-1.5. (I'm particularly interested in how the fonts
display.)

What are my options?
