[freenet-support] Which java VM, how to make it secure...

2005-10-11 Thread Level 13
I've recently upgraded to the latest version of Freenet (5105). The
Java VM I'm using is 1.4.2_07-b05. Should there be any improvement if
I upgraded it to a newer version?

Furthermore... If I want to be more restrictive about allowing
java*.exe to access the internet, do I just copy java.exe and
javaw.exe to another location (perhaps Freenet folder), adjust the
corresponding lines in FLaunch.ini to point to the new location:
JavaExec=C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_07\bin\java.exe
Javaw=C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_07\bin\javaw.exe

...and only allow the java*.exe in the new location to access the
internet (instead of allowing it for the default C:\Program
Files...java)?

1.5 is probably faster, not necessarily more secure...

I think the current problem is with the way start-freenet.sh starts the
node under jdk 1.4.x. If I run 'java freenet.node.Main' manually it
starts w/out a problem. Haven't tried figuring out why..

 At least one developer says we should use anything but Sun 1.4.* and

If you are referring to Matthew Toseland, you should know that he has
never actually tried using Sun's 1.4 JRE ;-)

 Is there a Freenet policy on this?

I use Sun's 1.4.1 JRE exclusively and have experienced no problems on
any of the platforms on which I use it.

To my knowledge, there is no firm evidence that Sun's 1.4 JVM is causing
any problems.

 Does it just depend which Java the programmer of the most recent patch
 happened to use?

It largely depends on your platform. On OpenBSD, for instance, the
only JVMs from which I can choose are Kaffe or a Linux JVM running
under Linux emulation. The latter does *not* work, which means I
must use Kaffe.

On Linux, I'm using Sun's JVM and it seems to be tolerable.
