AIM connection error after updating

2010-04-05 Thread Darren Moon

After updating from 2.5.8 to 2.6.6, at startup I get an error from AIM. The
error says "Received unexpected response from
http://api.oscar.aol.com/aim/startOSCARSession:useTLS=1 is not allowed for non
secure requests." Any idea why it would be doing this and how I can go about
fixing it? I logged in on another computer using the older version (2.5.8) and
it works fine.

Are you at a Sun (now Oracle) Campus, using the Sun WiFi, or using a
wired ethernet connection?

If you're at a former Sun (now Oracle) Campus, using the WiFi, and
unable to connect to the Beehive at all, there's an issue at a number of
Sun Campuses where traffic to the Beehive is essentially being blocked
by the network. If this is the case, you'll need to open a trouble
ticket with Sun IT.

If not, what error message are you receiving?

Have you read the Pidgin front page @ pidgin.im lately?

Take a look at http://pidgin.im. You didn't give us any error messages
or useful information, but I do believe it will help.

No, longtime Oracle.  But with the push upgrade the SSL

Installing Pidgin 2.6.6 with Spell checker failed.

2010-04-05 Thread Harold F. Ayers Jr.
My Windows 7 toybox had an older version of Pidgin installed (and for
some reason, Aspell wasn't installed at that time).
I noticed that Aspell wasn't installed while installing Pidgin 2.6.6, so
I selected it to install Aspell, but the installation
kept failing (unknown why, I'm guessing that the Pidgin website was
either busy, my connection was timing out, or

the Internet gods were mad at me again).
I was finally able to read the FAQ pertaining to installing Aspell
manually and got Aspell installed. The Pidgin FAQ

doesn't state how to get Aspell working with Pidgin (or VIS-A-VIS).

My question is ...how to get Pidgin working with Aspell?

Thanks

My guess (and what I would do barring another, easier solution) would be
to either try a repair install or uninstalling/reinstalling. I've never
had a problem with spell check installing but I haven't
installed/updated since the last release.

You need to have both Aspell and the appropriate language dictionary
(the language in which Pidgin is running) installed, then it should
just work.

I'm not sure this would be as useful as you're hoping, MSN, AIM, XMPP
(including Google Talk) all have no particular requirement to use one
domain.

Worse, Yahoo and AIM don't require a domain at all.

That function is not available for all protocols (and within the
subset of protocols that it is available, it may only be enabled when
the buddy you're talking to is using a client that advertises support
for images).
