Nope, mine doesn't. Reveal my mail headers and see.

So make sure that SM 1.1.X is not running, launch SM 2.X and make
sure you can reproduce the problem. If so, start a new thread for
that question (since it's not on topic in this thread) - more people
are likely to look at it then.

Good luck, and I'll watch the other thread in case I can provide any

I would double check with someone before making any changes. SM 2.X

Well, I use IMAP, and it seems this is not an option there (since
IMAP leaves the messages on the server anyway) so someone else will
have to help you with that.

By the way, don't you already have that set? If you don't, then when
you "Get new messages" with 2.X, it will remove them from the server,
such that you won't be able to get the messages in your SM 1.1.X

I suppose you are aware that composer's goal is to produce web pages.
The code to involved for this isn't the same as for word processing.

Drive a 4 wheel driven jeep when in heavy accidented terrain.
Drive a sedan while on a smooth motorway.

Bernard, I'm not convinced that your metaphor is correct. For the OP a
page-is-a-page; in fact lots of people use MS Word to compose web pages
since it can output html code. Lots of people love to "publish" via web
pages. More and more people "read" web pages ;-)

Ahh yes but to put it mildly, Word makes absolutely lousy html Code.
Don't believe it. Borrow a Copy of DreamWeaver and go to Tools menu and
choose Fix MS Word HTML. The html in word is used more for embellishing
text with bold, italic. underline They only place it renders properly is
to dowload it and open again in Office.

If your document is going to "live" as a web page, your word processor
should produce it.

I think the OP's question makes a lot of sense, especially in terms of
cloud computing and assuming that resources (e.g. speed) are not a
concern.

Which is more of a kludge: putting "links" into word processors (as we
know them) or putting Table Of Contents into Composer?

I see the OP's question as correctly portending the merger of word
processing and web page composition until there is no longer a
distinction.

sorry sorry sorry - my use of "ms word" is a red herring! pls ignore.

In an ideal world word processor should produce validatable html code.

I have to try OO the next time I'm using a current version. See how well that
does. But Composer, at least the recent one, is good enough for most of what I
do. My needs are simple. ;-)

Bill, don't know if it matters but your header indicates you're using
SM 1.1.16!!

Different machine, this one is used only for a few groups and filling
out forms. Until the last few days the forms capability in 2.0.x has
been less than I need, although the add-on from Phil Chee seems to have
fixed that and I plan to migrate. Of course the forms will not migrate
and I will have to do them all over, so I'm being hesitant about it.

Thanks for taking the time to check, but I really was on a 2.0.3 machine
when I saw the problem.

O.K., Bill how aboutWhen you were on SM 2.0.2, you had it set to
check for updates each week, and, just a couple of days after SM 2.0.2
did a check you heard here that 2.0.3 was out so you, manually,
downloaded and installed the update, then several days later SM (that
was 2.0.2) was doing its weekly check and found the update to 2.0.3 was
available!

i.e. before actually doing the update, SM did not check to see what
version it (itself) was.

Could this fit with your situation, Bill??

Almost. I didn't manually download in the "get the tarball" sense, but it's
certainly possible that I clicked "check for updates" and applied 2.0.3 from
there. I normally disable the automatic upgrade, but clearly the check was still
there. ;-)

In any case it's a possible cause, and when 2.0.4 comes out I'll make careful
notes of what options are set if I get a similar reminder.

I'll add to this thread if I have more info. Thanks for the ideas.

Sure, and a few of the people who do know the groups exist really miss
the old form manager.

I have mixed feelings about that statement, because it's true, but there's more
than that. Because if the new forms manager would solve the problem of filling
in forms, people would have grumbled but would not have been so intense. Yes, my
opinion, I don't claim any divine origin for it. ;-)

But the new "form manager" is more of a "form fields" manager, in that it not
only lets you make choices on every field, but it forces you to do so. At least
in my attempts it didn't treat a form as a set of values, but a group of sets of
field values. So it didn't really save much time, because all of the fields with
multiple possible values needed to be visited.

Now we have an extension, it works, I think I have found a technique to use is
much better, and when I am sure I'm doing an intended use and pass it to Phil to
make sure he agrees, then I'll write it up and pass it on. Until then I won't
lead anyone into something which may fail in a corner case.

And one or two of those are not satisfied with the extensions(s) they

You will never satisfy everyone, and I hope no developer gets depressed by that,

letters. I need to know how to make the gray letters in 2.0.3 black so
that I can click on them to make them take me to the items clicked.
That is how it now works in 1.1.8.

When I click Edit>Mail & Newsgroup Account Settings... on the 2.0.3 mail
page, I see all of my accounts listed. Thus, the account information
made the migration okay---but it appears to be turned off in the "Go"
area. Does this make sense?

I hope this clarification will help--if now, let me know and I will try
again.

Also, I am not finding the setting that I need to fix so that
downloading messages to 2.0.3 will not remove them from the server.

Thanks for the continued help.

That would be going too far, IMHO. You do *not* have to check the
task manager each time you want to launch SM. If when you launch
SM, you don't get the version you think you should, use the task
manager as a way to see if you currently have an instance running.

Really though, if you don't have the SM 1.1.X quick launch configured,
and there are no browser windows visible (on the window or in the
task bar) then you're probably good to go.

Note that you don't *need* to run both versions at the same time. In
fact you probably don't want to do this at all. Unless you feel you
need to do this for some reason, just don't do it.

Your plan should be to eventually have just one version of SM on
the computer. As soon as you are comfortable with SM 2.X, then
stop running SM 1.1.X (and fix up the 'leave messages on server',
etc.).

You shouldn't have to worry about the location of the profiles. Each
version of SM will work with the correct profile. If I were you, I
would just ignore the profiles for now.

installed. When I click it, it keeps asking me if I want to make it my
default browser. When I say no, it reverts (I think) to 1.1.18.

No. This should not be happening. See more below.

Well, I have made a little progress at this point.

I now know that the mail ICON I have on my desktop belongs to 1.1.18.
It is located as follows:
C:\Program Files\mozilla.org\SeaMonkey\seamonkey.exe" -mail
As I stated my earlier message, C:Program Files\mozilla.org\Seamonkey
contains information pertaining to 1.1.8. I based this fact on going to
Windows Explorer>C:\Program Files\mozilla>selecting Properties>looked at
the Created date of Monday, Feb 04, 2008, 12:20. That tell me that the
ICON on my desktop (before this message) belongs to 1.1.18.

I next clicked the web page on my desktop for 2.0.3>clicked Help of the
Web page>clicked About SeaMonkey>and the window that opened displays
"SeaMonkey Version 2.0.3." I now know that I am in the new SeaMonkey
version. I next clicked Windows>Mail & Newsgroups>and I was taken to
the 2.0.3 mail page. Note; All of the items under Go on the mail page
where my newsgroups and inbox are listed are grayed out. Thus, I now
know that my last message on the newsgroup was prepared on 1.1.18 not
2.0.3 as I thought.

Now I need to learn how to make the items listed under Go on the 2.0.3
mail page turn black.

  I say
this because--when I click Help and then About SeaMonkey (subsequent to
clicking NO to the default question) I see a window that opens to
1.1.18. I'm not sure what is going on at the moment. I think I am
sending this message using 2.0.3--but I'm not sure of that
fact--because, after clicking help, I again see 1.1.18.

When you go to Help -> About and see 1.1.18, then you are running
version 1.1.18.

See information above.

If you believe you're launching SM 2.0.3 and are getting 1.1.18, then
something is not set up correctly.

See information above.

This could be one of a couple problems that I can think of off-hand.
First, how do you have the shortcut set up on the desktop. Shortcuts
can point to an executable, or they can be "web" shortcuts, where
they just reference a web resource (like an HTML file) and allow
the system to determine the application to launch.

My Desktop ICONs point to executable files.

When you go to Properties on the shortcut, do you see the full path
to the seamonkey.exe executable in the Target field? If not, then
this may be your problem.

For 1.1.18 I see the following: "C:\Program
Files\mozilla.org\SeaMonkey\seamonkey.exe" -mail

Second problem is that when one version of SM is running, trying to
launch the other will just give you a new window to the currently-
running version. For example, say SM 1.1.X is currently running (even
if it's just the quick launch icon) and you launch the 2.X version
of SM, you will just get a new SM 1.1.X window.

I do understand. I will attempt to make the fix you suggested during
our earlier newsgroup conversation as soon as I get the two versions
working.

Before you can launch SM 2.X, you need to make sure you have no
instance of SM 1.1.X running at all. If you're not sure, check
the processes in the task manager - you should see no "seamonkey.exe"
process running.

I have not been doing this up to now. I have been looking at the bottom
of my screen where all of the software items running on my system are
identified in own tabs. I will start checking the task manager before
clicking a SeaMonkey ICON.

Note that there is a way to run both at the same time, but this
requires some additional effort, which I didn't mention as you
said you didn't want to run them both at the same time.

I will make this change as soon as I know that both systems are loaded
and working properly--one version at a time. As you can see, I will
need some very elementary lever instructions on how this is accomplished.

Note: I allowed to installation to install in the default locations.

I have the following under Documents and Settings:

C:\Documents and Settings\Frog\Application Data\Mozilla\
  Extensions
  Profiles
  SeaMonkey
I believe the Extensions and Profiles Folders are connected with 1.1.18,
while SeaMonkey is associated with 2.0.3.

I don't know about where 2.X places it's profile info, so the above
may or may not be correct. I'll let someone else answer. However,
SM 1.1.X and SM 2.X will each use their own profile, so I don't
think it matters

I don't know about where 2.X places it's profile info, so the above
may or may not be correct. I'll let someone else answer. However,
SM 1.1.X and SM 2.X will each use their own profile, so I don't

That seems reasonable.

On your desktop, right-click and select New -> Shortcut
In the "Type the location of the item" entry field, enter the full path
to the "seamonkey.exe" executable. For the SM 1.1 icon, this will be
  "C:\Program Files\Mozilla.org\SeaMonkey\seamonkey.exe"
For the SM 2.X icon, this will be:
  "C:\Program Files\SeaMonkey\seamonkey.exe"

In the "Type a name for this shortcut" entry field, you can enter
"SM 1.1.18" for SM 1.1.X and "SM 2.0.3" for SM 2.X (or whatever you
like).

This should give you shortcuts to launch each version of the browser.

You can then add two additional shortcuts created just like the above,
except adding the "-mail" command line option, as in:

  "C:\Program Files\SeaMonkey\seamonkey.exe -mail"

and name those icons something like "SM 2.X EMail".

this because--when I click Help and then About SeaMonkey (subsequent to
clicking NO to the default question) I see a window that opens to
1.1.18. I'm not sure what is going on at the moment. I think I am
sending this message using 2.0.3--but I'm not sure of that
fact--because, after clicking help, I again see 1.1.18.

Note: I allowed to installation to install in the default locations.

I have the following under Documents and Settings:

C:\Documents and Settings\Frog\Application Data\Mozilla\

I believe the Extensions and Profiles Folders are connected with 1.1.18,
while SeaMonkey is associated with 2.0.3.

C:\Program Files\Mozilla.org\SeaMonkey (followed by a number of sub folders.

C:\Program Files\SeaMonkey (followed by a number of sub folders).
I believe this is associated with 2.0.3

Now I must determine how to do what you suggest. I am not sure that I
can understand your recommendation--thus, I will likely be back with
further questions.

Note that you generally can't have both SM 2.X and SM 1.1.X running
at the same time, so make sure you manage this (or look into the
command line options needed to make this possible).

I understand that both versions should not be active at the same time
until I make the change suggested in an earlier exchange we had on this

Ok. I did that (using about:config) and I can report this:

Could there be a limit on the length of a link?!

You probably mean SM 1.1.18. If not, you should probably consider
upgrading your 1.1 version to 1.1.18.

To launch SM 1.1.X and have it open the Mail & Newsgroups windows,
just pass it the -mail command line option, as in:

  C:\seamonkey-1.1\seamonkey.exe -mail

where C:\seamonkey-1.1 is the directory where SM 1.1.X is installed.

Note that you generally can't have both SM 2.X and SM 1.1.X running
at the same time, so make sure you manage this (or look into the
command line options needed to make this possible).
