"Additional plugins are required to display all the media on this page"

2012-02-17 Thread Philip TAYLOR

1) Cannot be copied, so makes reporting issues with it
more difficult than need be;

2) Fails to indicate which plug-ins are required,
instead inviting the user to "Install plugin ..." with
all the concomitant risks that that might involve.

Any site that requires a plug-in that the user does not
have currently installed. Since I have no idea which
plug-ins anyone else has installed, there is little
point in referring them to any specific URL. This
one (taken at random from Youtube) demonstrates the
problem on my machine; whether it would do the same
for those who already have the necessary plug-in
seems moot.

I'm sure Philip knows, as most of us do, how to install a particular
plugin. What he's concerned about -- and I have been, too -- is that
"Install plugin..." seems to be asking the user to write a blank check.
It doesn't say "learn more..." or something, it seems to want permission
to install some unnamed software with no understanding of its source or
nature. How many sane people will do that?

Some confusion, WLS. I am not asking "How do I install
Flash", I am asking (a) Why can't I copy the text
"Additional plugins are required to display all the media on
this page" in order to simplify fault reporting, and (b)

why does Seamonkey (2.7.1) not tell me /which/ plug-in
it is proposing to install rather than asking me to blindly
authorise it to install whatever plug-in it chooses ?

Hope he solves his problem.

I just disabled all my plugins, restarted SeaMonkey and the video at
that link still played for me. View Page Source shows the page encoded
in HTML5, so is probably using the tag somewhere.

The missing plugin issue is being addressed. In the road map for the
second half of this year.

Actually, for limited bandwidth IMAP is a rather good choice, since you
don't run the risk of downloading 20mb attachments by accident. You
don't even have to download the message *body* if you know from the
header that it can wait until you are somewhere with better/unlimited
bandwidth.

I suppose for some accounts that could be true. For my work account on
my phone I have it set to not download any attachment over 50k unless I
say. POP downloads anything new and takes a few seconds to check the
account (on thing to check, only new files I have not downloaded). IMAP
must check though all the folders on the IMAP account and so take around
90 seconds for my work account. It must also sync up anything that has
changed and that I have done locally which takes another 30-120 seconds.

That's strange. I have no problems with Gmail. Perhaps your saved
password is corrupted?

Go in Tools, Data Manager. Type "gmail" in the left-hand search box.
Select "gmail.com". Now go to the right-hand pane, select the
"Passwords" tab. Delete the relevant passwords (note that there should
be two passwords -- one for POP and one for SMTP).

Now try downloading from Gmail again. With no saved password, it should
offer to save again

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately it didn't work. I deleted the
passwords as you directed. The next time I opened SM Mail it again
requested the password for GMail without any option to save the
password. I would welcome any other suggestions.

These two paragraphs worry me and confuse me.

So you download the Setup .exe from our website, save it locally then
try to run the installer. It doesn't work? (if so how do you get it) and
then System Restore (why, what is the error message/problem to cause that)

As soon as the installer gets to the screen to finish and I select

It sounds like in your case this is a function of the former issue.
(application.ini is certainly in in the .exe installer)

Image Zoom is not compatible with SeaMonkey 2.7.2

Version 0.4.6 Released December 26, 2010 78.8 KB

Works with Firefox 3.0 - 10.*, SeaMonkey 2.0 - 2.0.*, Thunderbird 2.0 -
3.1.*

You could try editing the install.rdf file so the min version is 2.1 and
max version is something higher like 2.9.*

That worked for me.

Sorry for the delay here, my time got really squashed...

Anyway, on my machine its at:

C:\Documents and Settings\Justin\Local Settings\Application
Data\Mozilla\SeaMonkey\SeaMonkey\updates

Where "Justin" is my windows username. And some of these folders are
marked "hidden".

Thank You.

I have experienced the "XUL Runner" error message box "Can't read
application .ini" every time I have tried updating since Ver.2.5
(frustrating enough so that I am about to switch to IE for the first
time ever, and I've been around since the pre-Netscape days), but I do
not have the file folder on my system that you referenced.

What OS are you on?

How do you update SeaMonkey?

How do you install SeaMonkey manually when its broken?

Be as specific as possible.

Windows XP SP3

I always update by downloading the latest version from the Seamonkey.org
website and running it's installer program.

I have not been able to install it at all since Ver 2.5. (I always have
to do a system restore using Acronis True Image) to get back there.)

"Launch Seamonkey", the screen flashes quickly (one time it looked like
a pop up was opened for checking extensions) ans then in less than a
second vanishes taking the newly installed desktop icon with it.
Subsequent attempts to launch bring the "XUIL Runner" error message.

It sounds like in your case this is a function of the former issue.
(application.ini is certainly in in the .exe installer)

Callek,

Perhaps the OP has a Windows XP sr3 configuration change in his system.
Maybe he is using a restricted user account.
Maybe his Firewall, or AV is blocking the running of the .ini file.

I run the same system and have no problems installing any SM updates.

Hmm. When you enabled checking, you reset the
extensions.CheckCompatibility pref to its default (true) value. For some
reason, the Reporter does not provide UI to reset it to "false."

BUT, I think it DOES set it to "false" when initially installed. So, you
might try REMOVING the Add-on Compatibility Reporter and then
reinstalling it.

Failing that, you can manually set the pref to "false" in about:config.
I remember doing so in the early days of SM 2.1.

What surprised me on checking about:config is that there are now
something like 50 variants of that pref, apparently to deal with
specific cases. I don't know if those are part of the new "compatible by
default" approach, or if the Reporter set them. They are all set to
"false" in my copy.

Do you have gmail in the "never remember passwords from this site" section?

Hmmm . . . AFAIK that section disappeared with the advent of the Data

None of the above. Absolutely no changes to any programs or OS settings
have been made in the time before or after encountering the problems
updating since ver. 2.5

It is as I posted. The downloaded program seems to install until I try
to actually launch it, then it does what I stated earlier. The repeated
error message that pops up after trying to launch the completed update
each time means I cannot get back into Seamonkey at all unless I restore
my system to its previous configuration with ver. 2.5. I can either do
a complete system restore or else just restore The entire 2.5 Seamonkey
programs folder and Profile. Barring that, no Seamonkey.

As soon as the installer gets to the screen to finish and I select
"Launch Seamonkey", the screen flashes quickly (one time it looked like
