Jeff, are you using the SM from the website or a Ubuntu modified version??

The way I did it and it worked just fine was via UbuntuZilla repository

echo -e "deb
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/ubuntuzilla/mozilla/apt all
main" | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ubuntuzilla.list > /dev/null

sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com C1289A29

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install seamonkey-mozilla-build

--
Take care,

Jonathan
---
LITTLE WORKS STUDIO
http://www.LittleWorksStudio.com

Got this:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install seamonkey-mozilla-build

E: Malformed line 1 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ubuntuzilla.list
(URI)
E: The list of sources could not be read.

Not sure what's going on here.

The generating the source list command was a one-liner so maybe with
wordwrap messed it up. You can edit it directly to fix it. In a terminal:

sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ubuntuzilla.list

# SeaMonkey PPA should be one line below, deb with 3 arguments

deb http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/ubuntuzilla/mozilla/apt all
main

CTRL+X to save the file then rerun:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install seamonkey-mozilla-build

--
Take care,

Jonathan
---
LITTLE WORKS STUDIO
http://www.LittleWorksStudio.com

Still getting the malformed first line error. I don't know what's happening.

This is the only line in the file:

deb http://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/ubuntuzilla/mozilla/apt all
main

Sounds like you have a control character somewhere in the file. Here is
my working copy you can download from this link:

Save the file to your system then move it

sudo mv ~/Downloads/ubuntuzilla.list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/

Although if you are using SM 2.5 you should have no problem.

He is in 2.25 and not 2.5 :-)

It is 2.25 I just need someone to explain how to see binaries, If I go
to a binary group it is just pages of gobbledygook how do I turn it in
to whatever it is.
I once tried to research how to use yEnc if that is what you use but
got
no where.

You can't see images in newsgroups in SeaMonkey at this time. See bug
893776 linked to above.

You probably will never be able to see multipart yEnc binaries in
SeaMonkey due to bug [119964 – (yEnc) Support yEnc encoding (including
multipart)](https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=119964)

I use Pan for viewing yEnc binaries and .nzb downloads.

[339983 – Add .nzb support for binary files on
USENET](https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=339983)

I downloaded pan and if I double click on a movie binary for instance it
does not open it but lets me save it. I then have a file that ends with
par 2 file but what do you do with it?

Par2 files are repair files if needed.

See [QuickPar for Windows](http://www.quickpar.org.uk/)

If I right click on it it has an opportunity to decode with yEnc but if
I click on it it says can not open yEnc

You probably need to install a yEnc decoder.

I did, I have been at this on and off for years I see pages and pages of
gobledygook that every one but me has no problem with but I have had no
success, that is why I asked for help in plain english.
It appears that I am supposed to forget sea monkeys reader and use pan,
but I still get nowhere.

Re: SeaMonkey more secure than Firefox

2015-03-04 Thread pjdkrunkt
What a ridiculous steaming pile of garbage. The entire premise upon which this
"study" and it's conclusions are based is 100% backwards. Most software
companies do not publicly report security vulnerabilities until they are fixed
and that fix is released.

Also, a great many of the vulnerabilities in Firefox are discovered by Firefox
developers and community members and patched before anyone on the outside even
knows about them. And one path of inquiry into a vulnerability will often lead
to the discovery of other related possible vulnerabilities which also end up
fixed. There's even cases of vulnerabilities created by new code in
development builds that is fixed long before the code that created the hole
appears in a release version. Security contests like PWN-2-OWN make all
discovered vulnerabilities known to the software developers before results of
the contest are published, giving firms a chance to fix them... note that IE
scores on PWN-2-OWN are sometimes redacted for these reasons.

So instead of high numbers of published vulnerabilities representing "unsecure"
software, it generally represents the exact opposite... active and aggressive
security testing and fixing.

So what's the least secure setup? Anything that hasn't been updated.
Especially if it's Windows running IE and Java.

I normally determine the FF equivalent of SM by adding the bits of the

therefore SM 2.26 is equivalent to FF 29

Don't know how the extra bit works in ... maybe SM 2.26.1 is
equivalent to FF 29.1 and SM 2.27 (if there was one) would have been
equivalent to FF 30.

Interesting! I found a chart at Mozilla listing the products.

Removed FF 29.
I agree with Geoff. May install 28.xx on another laptop tomorrow
Then eventually SM 2.23 or so on this machine.

SeaMonkey 2.23 is over a year old, having been released on 2013-12-12.

I would install SM 2.32. It has all the security vulnerabilities fixed
that your Firefox is vulnerable to.

Thanks Walt.

I like the interface of FF27 but not so much FF29.
Is the interface of SM 2.25 much different from SM 3x.x?
From what I have read, each new version takes away more user control.

I'm not too concerned about security.
This old XP3 and SM1119 machine has never gotten a virus in
its 10 years of XP incarnations and hardware upgrades.
The two w7 machines with everything are always getting nasty
stuff even though they are only used for work and supposedly secure.

Nope.

I've also seen this kind of thing as a security measure on pages that

You probably need to read those newsgroups as HTML rather than plain
text. That way, you might see images, if that is what the stuff that
looks like random garbage really is.

random delay after forwarding or, less frequently, sending an email. I
get a small status window that says the email was forwarded and with a
progress bar green line running anywhere from 35 to 100%. SM is in an
uninterruptible wait state in that I cannot select another email or do
anything else on the system. If I select "Cancel" in the status window,
Windows says the app is not responding and it can cancel SM. Cancel
frees up the system. The message has been forwarded; I can verify this
by forwarding to myself and checking on another system. If I just wait
for 90 seconds instead of doing anything with the status window the
progress bar goes to 100%, the status window disappears and the message
I am forwarding gets posted with a little blue arrow to show it was
forwarded. Everything returns to normal. At this point I'm thinking it
has something to do with Win 8.1 since I did not experience this delay
on our previous XP system. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Test it in Safe Mode which disables all add-ons.

Tried forwarding in Safe Mode and the same thing happened on the second
email I forwarded.

No, not forward but switch SM to Safe Mode. Have a look at Help->Restart
with Add-ons disabled.

Sorry my last post wasn't clear. Yes, I started SM in Safe Mode, went to
Mail, and forwarded two emails to my wife. The first went with no
problem, the second experienced the delay I described in my original post.

I recently observed a similar problem at another California state Web
site, the site for the California Secretary of State. With a new
politician in that office, the site was substantially redesigned. Now,
existing RSS feeds no longer work; and new RSS feeds cannot be setup. I
tried to report this problem via the Webmail page for the site's
Webmaster, but my inputs kept blanking out. I then sent a postal letter
to the Secretary of State about both problems. I have not yet received
a reply.

I'm not in CA, but this sounds like a cookie issue. Are you blocking
their cookies?

I've also seen this kind of thing as a security measure on pages that
accept credit card info: if you back up, you have to re-enter the card
data. This way, if you walk away from the computer after the transaction
is complete, someone else can't walk up and use the back button to read
your data.
