Any chance you are leaving messages on the server indefinitely? Check the
server's Inbox. If that is full, incoming messages will bounce.

For newsgroup accounts, I did settings to make the news servers send only
unread messages. Any newsgroup messages that got marked as read will
not be
sent again. In about:config, this is the setting:

mail.server.server.downloadUnreadOnly -> true

X is the number of the server for that account.

Good to know. Can I assume that if for some reason you have to remove
the newsgroup and then re-subscribe the "read" messages will come down?
I would want then to come back in if that were the case.

If you have to remove and re-subscribe, then it will be as if you had never
subscribed.

Bruce, SM keeps a record of which messages you have read in each group of a
news server that you have subscribed to. For instance, for this news server,
news.mozilla.org, the file is news.mozilla.org.rc.

If a message number is missing, in a news group, that indicates to SM that
that message is unread, so the message Subject: in the Threads Pane, is
bolded. Ensure that you have not set the relevant *.rc file to be Read Only,
as that would cause SM to think you have not read any of the messages in
that group.

As you're on Windows 10, you may need to adjust your File Viewing settings,
in Windows Explorer, so you can display the files buried down in your SM
profile!

HTH

Thanks, but the issue mysteriously ended. Not sure what was up, but it's all
good now.

I can't give you a definitive answer, but a 550 error is a refusal to relay

Well, sure. In a newsgroup one may have read the first post days ago.

Not if you set the application to download only unread messages.

I have been inside and out of SM and I do not see an option to only
download unread messages.

Probably because you don't download any messages (Read or Unread) until
you actually click on a message that you want to read.

Unless, of course, you have selected to download every message by
setting up File -> Offline -> Download/Sync Now to actually download
messages from the news server onto your hard drive so you can read them
whilst offline!

Which is kind of useless

My question was answered by WaltS48 on 10/21 so I'm going to leave it at
that.

Bruce, as mentioned elsewhere in this thread, if you set View->Threads

Doesn't this solve your problem??

Microsoft Answers is NOT a newsgroup. It appears to be a Web-based
forum. You mention an NNTP bridge. What is the NAME of the NEWSGROUP
at the NNTP end of that bridge?

You're correct. Microsoft answers is not a newsgroup. MS dropped the
newsgroups in 2009 and created MS Answers to replace them.

If you were familiar with the old MS newsgroups, they were the focal
point. Someone came up with adapting the newsgroups with what was called
the CDO for Window. It was the Web end of the newsgroups. What we have
now is exactly the opposite.

The server name if you were to set it up is simply 127.0.0.1 using Port 120.

Here is a screenshot of my folder tree. 127.0.0.1 is named Answers.
