Update!

After looking into this some more, I explored my profile's Mail folder,
where I discovered that the Inbox.msf file for that account was empty,
while the Inbox file itself still had plenty of stuff in it. I just shut
down SM, deleted the .msf file and relaunched SM, and all my mail was back.

So it seems like it's a problem with the .msf file not regenerating
properly.

Maybe Ken's mother's encountering the same situation: her email isn't
really deleted, just hidden.

Hope this helps!

Exporting feeds

2011-11-16 Thread S. Beaulieu
I have a new job and am trying to export all my feeds so I can get them
there (I'm stuck with using IE/Outlook, so I can't just copy the whole
folder). Problem is, SM's feed export function doesn't export all feeds.
None of my Twitter feeds, for example, get exported.

Since Twitter doesn't allow subscribing to account feeds without having
an account anymore, I can't just re-subscribe. That's why I wanted to
export them. (And no, I don't want to open a Twitter account just to get
the feeds!)

So what do you suggest?

Please verify that your email address is correct in your Mail
preferences and try again.

I've encountered that problem before and it's a Yahoo server problem,
not a SM one.

Basically, Yahoo doesn't want us to use their servers to send mail
originating from non-Yahoo addresses. Any non-Yahoo addresses must be
approved by them.

Trouble is, they now require that all emails originating from a Yahoo
email address go out through a connection using the same email address.

Let me try to explain that better.

It used to be that you could configure the SMTP server with one Yahoo
address (let's say outgoi...@yahoo.com) and its password and use it to
send email originating from any Yahoo adress (like outgoi...@yahoo.com,
outgoi...@yahoo.com, etc.). Made sense: Yahoo is Yahoo after all. Not
anymore. Now, Yahoo requires that the SMTP address matches the email's
sender.

So, basically, the solution is to add a separate SMTP server for each of
your addresses in Seamonkey, making sure to link each address to its
proper SMTP.

On the third menu bar on the email screen there is a dropdown
menu box called "View:" . When one clicks on the triangle in
the box, instead of a normal drop down list of choices,
the drop down list has a ball/bullet at the entry currently
selected, if it is All or Unread, and blank in the space on
the menu.
If one moves up or down between those two entries they fill
or blank respectively.
The other choices appear to behave normally.
Also if one chooses one of the other views, the bullet goes
away and it doesn't come back if one goes back to 'all'
or 'unread' without completing a choice.

Either I don't understand what you are saying or I'm not experiencing
this behaviour. My View drop-down works perfectly fine and its "bullets"
too, with no blank space.

So my request is actually: Either remove the capability to create
folder structures, or make it reliable.

What kind of unreliability are you talking about? I'be been using the
same mbox file (folders and all) since 1997, successively moving from
various versions of Netscape to Thunderbird, then to SeaMonkey. I never
had any sort of problem, corruption or otherwise.

Of course, I compact my folders regularly and don't keep thousands of
emails in my inbox (that's what the folders are for), so that might have
something to do with it.

From my experience (since I manage all my relatives' computers and
they've gone through the same mbox evolution as I have), I've never seen
any problems with that file format (unlike Outlook's notorious "let's

Unselect Message/Deselect on Delete

2011-08-22 Thread S. Beaulieu
I used to use Unselect Message to prevent Mail from automatically
opening the next message in line when I delete a message. Why that is
the default behaviour with no way of changing it has always baffled me.
After all, it forces you to read spam, for example.

Anyway.

Now that I upgraded to 2.2, it's no longer compatible, even with the
Compatibility Reporter. So I went to look for a replacement add-on. I
found Deselect on Delete, available for Thunderbird. I asked if they
planned to port it to SM, to which they replied no (see
https://bitbucket.org/squib/deselect-on-delete/issues). I tried editing
the file myself, but that didn't work (let's face it, I'm not that good
with that type of coding!)

So, is there anyone who'd be able to port it so it would be compatible

I think the problem here is one in communication. You try to do the
gentlemanly thing by replying both to the group/list/whatever and to
Daniel (or any other person), eliminating the obfusccating part in the
process. Doing so, though means that Daniel's address is openly
communicated through the g/l/w, which goes against his wish of keeping
it from spider bots. So by trying to be gentlemanly, you actually are
going against Daniel's wish to keep his address private. Add to that the
fact that he now gets the same reply *twice* from you (once the g/l/w
and once in his email) and I think you can begin to see why it annoys him.

So that's why he thinks you are going through a lot of trouble to annoy
him since if you simply deleted his address from the reply field (rather
than editing it to deobfuscate it), it would be less work for you and
nicer to him (or anyone else).

In 2.0 (and I expect in 2.1 also), you can define separate identities
for each account, and each identity can have its own sig. You need to go
in Edit -> Account Settings, then click on your account's name. You
should then see a Manage identities button. Click on it, and there you
can add identities (for example, one for business, one for personal, one
for nonprofit).

Once you're done with that, you can select the proper identity when you
compose an email by clicking on the Sender bar at the top of your email
writing window, which will allow you to choose which identity to use.
Once you select it, you'll see its signature appear. If you change
identity at this point, the sig will also change.

Otherwise, if there is a problem with this in your SM version (2.0) it
won't be fixed for that version since the new version (2.1, which is

automatically and allows to easily restore them.

Question being, will it backup the proper bookmark file (which isn't
accessed by anything else than SM when the problem happens) or the...

Disappearing bookmarks

2011-06-06 Thread S. Beaulieu
Occasionally, I've seen bookmarks disappear in SM, on various computers.
Usually, a simple restart is all that's needed and everything is back on
track.

So is not the case today. My bookmarks have disappeared in SM even
though the bookmarks.html file is in the profile and fully populated.

Yesterday, I "imported" those bookmarks again, reconfiguring the
personal bar and all, and all seemed well. This morning, though, my
bookmarks are gone again.

Sure, I can reimport them once again, but the fact remains that it's not
normal for the bookmarks file to occasionnaly go undetected like that.

What could I do to solve this problem for good?

Thank you.

Twitter through RSS feed

2011-03-01 Thread S. Beaulieu
I follow a few people on Twitter through the RSS feed in Mail. I have
noticed that tweets are automatically truncated in Mail after a certain
amount of characters, which isn't the 140 Twitter limit.

Take, for example, this tweet:
http://twitter.com/S_Bourguignon/status/42289963483660288

In Mail, it's cut short after "ce titre inapproprié et dén", thus
truncating the last 13 characters. Obviously, the whole 140 could appear
in Mail, but why doesn't it? Is there a setting I can change somewhere
to correct that situation?

It's not a huge problem since I can simply click on the tweet's link to
read it all, but it's definitely annoying. I'd rather have it all in Mail.

Re: Unable to change junk mail destination folder

2011-02-08 Thread S. Beaulieu
Update: I managed to solve the problem by erasing my profile, copying in
its place an older version of it I'd saved and then recopying all my
mail data files over those. This allowed me to change the destination
folder of junk mail *before* deleting the account to which it was
originally redirected, and then delete that said account.

It seems that the problem really was caused by that: suppressing an
account whose junk folder was the destination folder for all accounts'
junk mail. It screwed up something in the system, thus preventing me to
make any more changes to the junk mail settings.

I think this is a bug that needs to be corrected. Sure, deleting such an
account would leave junk mail settings "orphan", but it shouldn't block
the system completely. The settings should still be modifyable.

Anyway, I thought I'd report back this in case someone else runs into

Unable to change junk mail destination folder

2011-02-04 Thread S. Beaulieu
I just deleted an email account properly through Edit - Account Settings
- Delete. (The exact names my be off as my SM is in French—bear with me!)

Except I forgot that its junk folder was set as the destination folder
for all my other accounts. No problem, I figure I'll just go change the
settings in all other accounts. Except it doesn't work: I can change the
setting alright, but SM doesn't save it, no matter how many times I try.
I can't even uncheck the "Move new junk mail to" box. The drop-down menu
appears empty (in fact, all drop-down menus in that window appear empty)
and when I select the right destination folder, the OK button doesn't
work: I click and nothing happens. If I select a destination folder and
just leave this window with the X, then the setting isn't saved, of course.

Any ideas how to solve this? It's not a huge problem, since junk mail
simply remains in the main email window, but it's really annoying.

retype both in case I really mistyped, and it still doesn't work. So I
then decide to let it rest for a bit since I seem to have gotten
confused in all my passwords, so I click the cancel button.

Then SM is launched, with all my email accounts open. I tried to change
the password again, but it refuses to let me do so.

So on the one hand, the password seems to be all wonky and on the other,
SM lets me use its features completely, ignoring the protection that is
supposed to be afforded by the password.

So what's going on? Does anyone have an idea?

Are you sure you launched the right version of the software? Unless you
uninstalled 1.1.16, it's still on your computer as well as 2.0.11. If
the shortcut hasn't been replaced, than using it will launch the older

I do agree that it would be an improvement to be able to add more than

Well, of course. 1.1.X profiles are not directly compatible with 2.x

It doesn't save data without your permission since you activated the

data saved, then deactivate the feature.

Now you might want it to work differently. Fair enough. (I think that
something like the password manager could be a good idea for people who
do want to use the form data saving feature.) But it's not right to
imply that SM is based on M$-type tactics when it's just doing precisely

The 3 different E-mail accounts are hosted on 3 different servers
by 3 different providers (my ISP, GoDaddy, and a small company).

I also have on my laptop three email accounts hosted on three servers.
The thing is, in all cases, the SMTP account is the same one: the one
from my ISP. That is because GoDaddy and such usually don't offer SMTP
connections, just mailboxes. You need to provide your own connection to
access email (because GoDaddy is not an ISP, just a host).

What that means is, if I'm at home, I don't need to define a user name
and password for SMTP since they automatically detect that I am using
their network (duh, I'm home!). When I'm somewhere else, though, using
WiFi or whatever, that is not the case. They see I am on a different
network, trying to access theirs to send email. The email address I am
using is of no importance, even if it is myaddr...@myisp.com. They just
detect the network used.

In those cases, my user name and password for my ISP account must be
defined in SeaMonkey. That allows my computer to "tell them" that I
really am just one of their users accessing their server from another
network.

That is done in the navigator, in Edit --> Account Settings --> Outgoing
servers. Edit your settings there to put in whatever needs to be put in
(your ISP can give you this info if you don't have it, and it's usually
posted on their website).
