4) I have seen evidence of sites not working with current versions of
Seamonkey, regardless of what kind of spoofing you do.  A couple of
months back, there was discussion of rottentomatoes.com, and in the
context, I did check there, and found problems that I couldn't bypass
with spoofing.  Apparently, they really do use some feature that's
been added to more recent versions of Firefox.

Smith

Thomas, a couple of days ago, in the thread "No access to Acronis site",
Cecil Bankston indicated that he was getting around some Browser
sniffing but just spoofing the Useragent string "Mozilla/5.0".

Could be worth a try!!

Tried it - Google appeared very different. I really have trouble with
YouTube and Facebook when I try any spoofing so far.

On what operating system? Windows, Mac or Linux?

Probably one with Firefox 84.0 which is the current version or Firefox
78.0 which is the current ESR version.

YMMV

I use Firefox Nightly, but keep SeaMonkey around to help with the easy

What was the key name? I don't see it in my about:config

I use Facebook Purity (FBP) and the display of the pages in FB is due to
an algorithm FB changed. The FBP site also offers a temp workaround on
their revertsite.com. BUT - it does not always work for everyone and it
will stop working for you after a certain amount of time.

I have tried in Firefox and Chrome and the new Edge. FB made the changes

(for me), I do not like th epush to make things look like the mobile

I often see this with certain newspaper Web sites.  It is a function of
the site.  I think in some cases it is intentionally trying to prevent
printing in order to protect the site's copyright.  Other cases are
merely very bad HTML.

On rare occasions, I can print what I want by disabling JavaScript (not
Java, which is different).  Otherwise, I [right-click > Select All >
Copy] and then paste into a plain-text editor (ususally Wordpad).  I
must then adjust the paragraph spacing and sometimes the font before
printing from the editor.

Sometimes I find that I can print an 'unprintable' or awkward page using
the "Print Friendly" add-on. On other pages, Seamonkey native printing
ability does a better job. I often experiment with both when trying to
print something of importance.

I installed Print Friendly on both browsers. I'll see how they work.
Thanks.

For bookmarks, have you considered adding comments instead of
color-coding? A comment can be something simple such as #, $, %, *, A,
x, etc, to flag the bookmark.

To add a comment:

1. On the SeaMonkey menu bar, select [Bookmarks > Manage Bookmarks].

2. On the Bookmarks Manager window, select any single bookmark and then
select the More button near the bottomm-left of the right-hand pane.

3. Now select any single bookmark that you wish to highlight. In the
Description area, type a character.

NOTE: The Description area appears only when a single bookmark is
selected. Whatever you enter will appear below the bookmark.

Alternatively, you can append -- with leading spaces -- flagging
characters at the end of the names of bookmarks. In this case, what you
enter will appear on the same line as the bookmark.

Whichever way you do this, the characters you enter will appear whenever
you export your bookmarks to an HTML file. I export my bookmarks every
time I terminate SeaMonkey. In my profile, I inserted the following
into file user.js:
user_pref("browser.bookmarks.autoExportHTML", true);
// automatically export bookmarks into an HTML file
The semi-colon (;) at the end of the first line is mandatory. The
second line is merely a comment -- indicated by the double virgules (//)
at the beginning -- to remind me why I have this.

I do use the description area for passwords. It's a great way to keep
track of passwords for each site. I also export my bookmarks to an html
file upon closing SM. I would just like some in red to designate
important ones. Copying them from html to Word seems to be one good way
to do it.

As for your passwords, there is no equivalent. I would question
printing out your passwords from SeaMonkey unless you are going to
deposit the printout in a safe deposit box at a bank.

On the other hand, if you have passwords for sites where you do not have
critical data (e.g., not personal or financial), you might try
something similar to what I do. When I set such a password, I first
enter it into a text file before entering it into SeaMonkey. My text
file does not allow colors, but you could use a Word file that allows
the use of colors. Just remember that this is not appropriate for
passwords you want to keep secure.

I have three lists of passwords on my PC:

* One is plain text for passwords for sites where logging-on merely
brings up the settings I want to use. These generally are for
site-specific forums. I do not care if someone discovers these
passwords.

* The second is also plain text but saved with strong encryption. This
too is for sites where logging-on merely brings up the settings I want
but could be subject to serious malicious actions by others. These are
generally for sites where I make purchases.

* The third is a spread sheet that is also saved with strong
encryption. This is for financial services, modem, router, utilities,
Medicare, Social Security, ISPs, etc, sites where I could lose
significant funds or suffer identity theft. I change these passwords at
last annually, and no two sites have the same passwords.

NOTE: All three lists contain passwords that are NOT dictionary words.
They are random strings of letters, numbers, and symbols. I do not need
dictionary words if I have these lists.

Actually I do put a copy with the bank. I'm not clear on how you enter
your text files into SM?

Export your bookmarks into bookmark.html then modify this web page ...
It's a one-way action colors will not be present if you import
your modified html file.

AnyWay, what part of bookmarks did you want to have a red-color
attribute ?

When I print the whole list, I'd like some bookmark titles and extra
info about them to be in red.

Perhaps copy/paste the html file into WORD then select text and modify
the foreground color ?

I see that does work, but I have 99 pages of BM's. I only need a fairly
small number to be in red, so I'll have to play with this a bit. Thanks.

Export your bookmarks into bookmark.html then modify this web page ...
It's a one-way action colors will not be present if you import your
modified html file.

AnyWay, what part of bookmarks did you want to have a red-color attribute ?

When I print the whole list, I'd like some bookmark titles and extra
info about them to be in red.

Hi Ray,

this might be something different.

With my 2.53.2 page view works fine.
_But_ I observe the same login problem like you:

1. Visit walmart.com
2. ˋClick account icon (top right on page) → Sign inˊ
3. Type fantasy email address + nonsense password
4. [Sign In]
5. In Captcha dialog select "I'm not a robot"
6. solve Captcha (several tiled pictures puzzles might
    have to be resolved)
7. In new Captcha dialog restart from 5.
    and so on
I did several rounds there. There seems to be no end  

In error console after (first) step 6 tons of warnings appeared:
<https://imgur.com/a/hvEGtY5>

I tried the same with FF 73.0a1 (2019-12-25) (32-bit):
There after Step 4 an error message appears: "Your password and email
do not match. Please try again or". That sounds plausible   

So seems to be SM related.

Then it seems we are at problem #2 dynamic imports only available since
Fx 67. Might tackle it later but seems to need a bunch of prerequisites
. So you probably need to use another browser for now. New Edge Chromium

I finally solved this issue. First I did uninstall SM to see if that
would do it. It didn't fix it. I then looked at file associations for
URL files in this PC and my other ones. This PC showed SM for URL
files, while my other PC's showed Internet Browser.

SM did look right to me, but I changed it to Internet Browser to match
my other PC's. That was the solution - it changed things right away,
so now I can drag from SM to my desktop to make an internet shortcut.
Thanks for all the suggestions.

PERFECT !
Just a question: I am interested to look at my pc about "file
associations for URL files" - Where precisely is located this parameter
? Tell me the steps to find this parameter ...

Just type "file associations" in the search box at the bottom of the
Start Menu. That will bring up all the information you need. There are
links at the bottom of the screen that comes up that will allow you to
choose default apps by file type.

No solution found so far. I was able to take a shortcut that I had
made
on my desktop awhile ago, and change the target to a website I
wanted a
new shortcut for. That worked, but I still can't create a new one by
dragging to the desktop.

Is SM set as your default browser?

Yes it is.

Most likely it's a registry issue.
Can you create (drag and drop) any desktop shortcuts that work,
like from a Word Doc, Excel, graphics, etc?
Do IE11 drag & drop desktop shortcuts open with IE11?

Do the url shortcuts look correct with no added spaces, etc?

I can make shortcuts with other applications. It looks like it's only SM
that has the problem. URL shortcuts look normal, except for SM. When I
drag a site from SM, under Properties the file is called a "URL File",
at 0 bytes. The other normal shortcuts I have are called "Shortcut Files
(.lnk)."

Possible file or registry corruption.
Back up the system first, clone, image, etc.

If it were me I would run a surface scan of the hdd if a spinner.
Next I would run  SFC /SCANNOW  and then try SM.
If no good then I would reinstall SM over itself.
If still no good then I would save all SM personal data and
do an uninstall and reinstall.

So far I reinstalled SM over itself. That didn't solve it. I can go to
any folder on my PC and right click to "Send to Desktop (create
shortcut)". That works fine.

WFM, SM 2.49.5 on Win7 Pro SP1.

Your spoofed message header doesn't specify your SM version.

Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x64
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64; rv:52.0) Gecko/20100101
SeaMonkey/2.49.5

Works for me, too.

Check the properties of a problem icon to get its size. I have several
Internet shortcuts, none of which are as large as 300 bytes (BYTES, not
kilobytes or megabytes).

If it is larger than 300 bytes, it is not an Internet shortcut. In that
case, try opening it in Wordpad (not Word or Notepad). You might have a
copy of the HTML of the Web page instead of merely a shortcut to it on
the Web. That might mean you have dragged something other than a link.

Size is very small, around 154 bytes.

How do I do the same in 2.0.13? I would like to use the new ATT/Yahoo
mail.

I have added to about:config the following entry

Name Status Type Value
general.useragent.extra.spoof user set string Not Firefox/3.6.16

However the above may not be sufficient. You must also have your email
accounts correctly set and may also need to adjust your anti-virus program.

For my att Yahoo mail:
pop.att.yahoo.com Port 110
usern...@att.net

Outgoing mail:
smtp.att.yahoo.com Port 465

One other point. Yahoo mail is using SSL security. If you have an
anti-virus program that handles email security, you must coordinate it
with SeaMonkey.
For example Avast handles this on my system so SeaMonkey smtp has use
secure authentication unchecked and SSL/TLS selected. The Avast email
shield SSL accounts has an smtp.att.yahoo.com Port 465 SSL entry.
I have no security entries for the SeaMonkey POP server.

So far this doesn't work for me with the new Yahoo mail. Can someone
tell me what else to try?

BTW, I run SeaMonkey 2.0.13 on XP and on Win7-64bit.

Take a look at the PrefBar extension:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/seamonkey/addon/prefbar/, and look at
the settings for User Agent.

Although the UA strings provided are quite old (e.g., Firefox 2.0.0,
Mozilla 1.7.13, Netscape 6.2, IE 6.0), they provide the necessary form
for putting in current information.

The settings I most often use for spoofing are Seamonkey (as Firefox),
and Firefox 3.6.16 under Windows XP, specifically:

js:useragent=Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-US;
rv:1.9.1.9) Gecko/20100317 SeaMonkey/2.0.13 NOT Firefox/3.6.16

and

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.2.10)
Gecko/20100914 Firefox/3.6.16

I don't have IETab installed at the moment, and once in a great while, I
will spoof IE 6 with:

js:useragent=Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1);
appname=Microsoft Internet Explorer; appversion=4.0 (compatible;
MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1); platform=Win32;

I also have spoofs set up for Firefox 3.6.16 under Mac OS 10.6, Lynx and
Opera, although those generally proof-of-concept ones that I don't
usually use.

For knowing what to put, it helps that I have access to Apache logs on a
server, and so I can see what's actually being shown by various browsers.

A couple of additional useful links...

The general form of user agent strings (and includes examples):
https://developer.mozilla.org/en/Gecko_user_agent_string_reference. This
one includes notes that are current, as of Firefox 4.0 and Seamonkey
2.1, including Seamonkey making direct reference to Firefox.

David Ross' notes on defeating browser sniffing:
http://www.rossde.com/internet/sniffing.html

With versions of Seamonkey prior to 2.1, it's easy enough to spoof
Firefox, but it's one where it's better to not spoof, unless absolutely
necessary. If you're using Seamonkey, you want that turning up in logs,
so that developers can't say nobody uses Seamonkey (or for that matter
Camino, Galeon, or other Gecko-derived browsers). Thus, if you have to
spoof, the form that shows Seamonkey in the UA string is preferred, so
that that information is in the logs, and that the critical information
is not Firefox, but Gecko.

Thus, although you can set the the UA string in prefs.js, my preference
is to do it on the fly with PrefBar, and spoof only when needed.

Smith

I don't see useragent in prefs.js. Do you have to add this line as new?

I happen to be working in Yahoo mail today, and on one of my accounts,
I'm playing with the new interface.

I'm running SM 2.0.13 on Window, and Yahoo is complaining about both my
default identity, and the one I normally spoof with, using PrefBar:

useragent=Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1.9)
Gecko/20100317 SeaMonkey/2.0.13 NOT Firefox/3.6.16

On the other hand, if I spoof myself as simply Firefox and Windows XP:

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.2.10)
Gecko/20100914 Firefox/3.6.16

I'm not having any problems with that one.

So, is it possible use spoofing or whatever to get the new Yahoo mail to

Yes, although as has been discussed in this group before, if you're
doing spoofing, wherever possible, it's preferable to do it in such a
way that you're showing Seamonkey in the UI string. That way,
maintainers who actually pay attention to their logs can't claim nobody
uses Seamonkey. And the same applies for other Gecko browsers, such as
Camino, K-meleon, etc.

The underlying problem is that sites that do browser sniffing tend to
assume Firefox, rather than Gecko, without the understanding that
Firefox, Seamonkey (and others) are all merely renditions of Gecko.

http://geckoisgecko.org/

My understanding is that the Firefox developers considered changing
their UI string to show only Gecko (and not Firefox) in Firefox 4,
but chose not to. Doing so would have forced the issue of sniffing for
Gecko, rather than Firefox as an implementation of Gecko, but it would
have caused a lot of problems for Firefox users at sites that demand
Firefox.

What I find amusing is that long after Netscape died, there were sites
that insisted on Netscape 6 as the only acceptable alternative for IE.
However, I still occasionally see sites that barf on Seamonkey, and
their unsupported browser page still indicates that they want
Netscape, even if they actually accept connections from Firefox.

Smith

Could you please provide the actual wording in order to get the spoofing
to work?

Odd - Yahoo (via ATT) has always told me that I'm unsupported but
gives me an option to proceed anyway.

This is the only message I get:

Your web browser doesn’t support Yahoo! Mail Beta.

Tom,

Open your SM browser and select Bookmarks from the top menu, then select
Manage Bookmarks and see if you can delete the RSS bookmark.

Michael
No, it won't delete. It is a separate section right under Manage

You can use a userChrome.css style of a Stylish user style to hide the
RSS feed button.
