How about checking in Windows Find Files and Folders, with SM completely closed (including the quick launch function, if you use it), looking for a file called parent.lock. How about trying the old fashioned method. Download the latest, public, release to a folder on your hard drive. Shutdown and power off the PC. Power on (after 60 seconds) and boot up. do not launch SM. With Add/Remove Programs (Control Panel) remove all installations of SM. Reboot. Go to the download folder where you saved the latest version and install from there. Use the normal default installation tasks so SM will install according to your operating system. Just as a backup, be sure you can access this newsgroup through IE. One of the reasons this worked so well for you is because the really important files are in your Profile, and during un-install and then install the Profile is not touched. All the important things like e-mail and accounts, bookmarks, etc are stored in your profile.
