I followed the directions and reinstalled SeaMonkey as suggested. Walla!! It
seems that did the trick. My thought was, I would lose my Bookmarks and would
have to reset my connections with my email accounts. Nothing but a reinstall
and a reboot and all is well with SeaMonkey. For some reason I hesitated about
doing that myself but I wanted to find the right answer through the forum.
Thanks

As Michael mentioned, the program installation is in one location and
your personal settings and data are in another. Re-installing the
program does not touch your profile. This link explains in detail:

Check the profile for a lock file and delete it.

How about checking in Windows Find Files and Folders, with SM
completely closed (including the quick launch function, if you use it),
looking for a file called parent.lock. If you find one, delete it,
then re-start SM.

I found and deleted parent.lock. Still get the same message and I cannot
update, and I get the same results from Help Apply downloaded update now.

I deleted parent.lock again, somehow it restored itself.I received a message
before the SeaMonkey started to download update. It seemed to go through the
process and when it finished I was asked to restart SeaMonkey. Although the
same message appeared The update could not be installed, I think it did
update.

I'd recommend downloading the program and installing.

How about trying the old fashioned method.

Download the latest, public, release to a folder on your hard drive.
Shutdown and power off the PC.

Power on (after 60 seconds) and boot up. do not launch SM.
With Add/Remove Programs (Control Panel) remove all installations of SM.
Reboot.
Go to the download folder where you saved the latest version and install
from there.
Use the normal default installation tasks so SM will install according
to your operating system.

Just as a backup, be sure you can access this newsgroup through IE.

You are very welcome. One of the reasons this worked so well for you is
because the really important files are in your Profile, and during
un-install and then install the Profile is not touched. All the
important things like e-mail and accounts, bookmarks, etc are stored in
your profile.

Since you did not give us critical information; such as, operating
system and version, I can only suggest you figure out how to report all
open processes on your system and close the open SeaMonkey.
