Hmmm... are you, by any chance, spoofing a Firefox user-agent? That

SM 2.0.14, and Adobe.com offers me the full download by default.
YES !!! I removed the spoof entry in about:config then i was able to
download the lastest version X - i was obliged to fiddle around to
permit me to download the english version ... he was insisting to
download the french version :-)

Perhaps, should i go there
ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/10.x/10.0.1/en_US/ for the
latest Adobe Reader X ?

Yes, that's a valid workaround.

and then ... how to switch to the Version 10 plugin for IE(would be
easy) for SM

Don't worry about it. Just install Adobe Reader X and it will take care
of the plugins for all the browsers.

I have installed the just downloaded: AdbeRdr1001_en_US.exe
And ALL is OK, plugins are silently installed in my IE and SM browsers.

Thanks again pinpointing the problem caused by spoofing.

Probably one of the few cases where the compatMode UA format can harm
us... in theory though, the adobe addon should actually work for
SeaMonkey if they advertise it as such (though I don't like that request
of users though)

Well, this doesn't actually break anything -- it just doesn't upgrade,
you stay with the old version.

You can always get the full download from http://www.adobe.com . In
fact, I prefer using Seamonkey to get Adobe Reader *because* the Adobe
site does not recognize it and therefore does not attempt to install
GetPlus -- instead, it offers the installer as standard download. I
dislike this practice of forcing visitors to use your custom download
manager -- I mean, why should I have to have a download manager for
Google, one for Adobe, one for Microsoft Technet and so on? I already
have a general-purpose download manager!

They should offer the option of downloading it any way you want. If they
are concerned about bandwidth costs, offer BitTorrent downloads.

Running SM 2.0.14 here and doing about:plugins in the URL window shows:

Adobe Acrobat

File name: nppdf32.dll
Adobe PDF Plug-In For Firefox and Netscape 10.0.1

You can try to uninstall your reader by removing the nppdf32.dll file
and re-installing Adobe Reader.

Because I have an old version of PGP installed on my PC, I had big
problems with Adobe Reader X. I have PGP 8.0.3. The "trialware" form
of PGP 10.0 contains a security vulnerability that I could avoid only by
obtaining a purchaseware form. However, Adobe Reader X is incompatible
with PGP 8.0.3 although no one could explain why there is any
relationship between the two applications.

Various strategies were proposed by others to overcome the
incompatibility. I tried most of them. While they allowed me to use
Adobe Reader as a stand-alone application, they generally prevented use
of Adobe Reader with SeaMonkey. Finally, I found a successful strategy.

To use Adobe Reader X with SeaMonkey under Windows XP, I had to do the
following after installing Adobe Reader X:

1. In my Windows registry, in
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Adobe\Acrobat
Reader\10.0\FeatureLockDown], I had to create a new key named
bUseWhitelistConfigFile with the dWord value of 0001. Be careful
when modifying the registry. Great harm can result from an erroneous
modification.

2. In the folder containing the installed AcroRd32.exe, I had to create
an ASCII file named ProtectedModeWhitelistConfig.txt. This file
contains the one line
SECTION_ALLOW_ANY = *PGPhk*
