Installing SM 2.40 and Relations To Different Drive....

2016-10-07 Thread SamuelS
Hello all, just received my new system, suffice it to say the company
that made it for me, did what they wanted to do and not what I requested...

I had my SM program on W10 pro on drive e: I have tried to re-install on
drive e: and the message:

Your Seamonkey profile cannot be loaded. It cannot be found or is
corrupted. (or something to this effect)

Thoughts on what my issue is on this?

Totally not enough nor clear information.

Does drive E: exist?

What do you mean by re-install on drive E:? Reinstall what? The
program? The profile? How?

Deatil what you have done and maybe we can help.

Your issue is, at this point, that you're not telling us enough to know
what the hell you're talking about.

Okay Ed, thank you

My issue is that I Am unable to install SM 2.4 on my W10 machine on
drive e: in my box.

I have dl'd the program, execute the installation, select custom
install, select drive e:, installed, then get the message noted above
about SM not being able to open.

I have previously achieved this, but cannot figure out what incorrect
turn I have made this time.

There is a folder set up on drive e: for SM, maybe I need to delete it
altogether and start again? Or maybe it is possible that I thought the
program was loaded on a different drive when reality that was not true
only the profiles?

Thank you all again and I hope this is clearer...

2016-10-07 Thread Felix Miata
Could it be that you need but don't have administrator rights to install it
at all, or that an existing profile has incorrect permissions? Can _you_
locate the existing profile(s) and read any of its/their files? Are error
message(s) you get if you open a command prompt and try to start SM from it
any different than you reported in your OP?

Why don't you want to install it on the system drive? There is no need to
keep SM profile(s) on the system drive. Profiles can be located anywhere you
please, including someplace you can easily remember, find, backup and restore.

DO NOT delete any folder from your E-drive.

Find the file named profiles.ini. It is likely somewhere on your
C-drive in a system folder. Edit that file as follows:
*  Set IsRelative=0
* Set Path= to point to where your profile was pasted. This should be
the complete path.

Find the file named seamonkey.exe. This should be on your E-drive.
Copy the file and paste the copy AS A SHORTCUT on your desktop. (Does
Windows 10 have a desktop?) Select the shortcut, right-click, and
select Properties from the pull-down context menu. Edit the target to
add "-p xxx" after seamonkey.exe without the quotes and where xxx is the
name of your profile (the value of Name= in the file profiles.ini).

You might have to edit the file profile.js in your profile folder. This
must be done without SeaMonkey running and must be done very, very
carefully. Paths in that file might have to be changed to correspond to
paths in your Windows 10 installation. Be careful to change paths while
keeping the format of the old paths. If the preference variable
print_printer in profile.js has a value that does not reflect the name
of the printer in your new setup, change it to
user_pref("print_printer", "");
to use your Windows 10 default printer. There might be other changes
needed to prefs.js.

I have done this myself in going from Windows XP to Windows 7. It can
be a tedious process. It might take several attempts to get everything
correct.

Actually, the message says the PROFILE cannot be opened.

How did you restore your profile onto the new machine and where did you
put it?

How are you launching SM? What shortcut? Right-click the shortcut and
click Properties, then the Shortcut tab. Check the Targe box. Is there
a profile specified at the end of the line?

Try launching the Profile Manager. What happens?

Click Start. Type %APPDATA%\Mozilla. That will open Windows Explorer to
the Profiles location. Verify that your SM profile is there, its name,
and see if the SM shortcut is pointing to that location.

I have previously achieved this, but cannot figure out what incorrect

The program directory and the profile are two different things. It is
easier to set up the program directory wherever you want it and just let
it set up the profile in the default location.

Samuel, how was your SM profile moved to your new computer??

I'm having flash backs of moving the profile via CD which usually/often
resulted in all the files in the Profile being set to "Read Only", and
SM needs to be able to write to various files in the Profile, so needs
all files (and the Profile, itself!!) to not be marked as "Read Only"!!

May mean nothing .!

Hello all,

Dumb me, last night tried to re-install SM 2.40 on my W10 machine as
desired c: drive and I receive the same message as above...

Now this is very confounding. I have tried installing as Admin, etc...

So SM is not installing at all on any drive, so far.

I only transferred my SSD's and HD's to the new system. I expected
some re-installation but nothing like this, so far. My focal point is
getting SM installed and getting emails then the rest to follow.

You give us NO DETAILS ... this is my details:
The SeaMonkey profile is for my windows7 pc at:
C:\Users\RZ\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\SeaMonkey\
where I can see:
- The "profile.ini" file
- The "Crash Reports" directory
- The "Profiles" directory
-- under the "profiles" directory I can see:
  - The "ey8r9gln.default" directory who contains all the profile.

I then just have a new pc With Windows 10 Pro 64 bits.
I just copy C:\Users\RZ\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\SeaMonkey\*.*
From my C: Drive of my Windows7 pc
AS C:\Users\RAY\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\SeaMonkey\*.*
To my C: Drive of my new Windows10 pc

RZ is my pc-username of my Windows7 pc
and RAY is my pc-username of my Windows10 pc

THEN I install SM on my Windows10 pc
And all goes well

SM was and is installed on W7 and on W10 at default locations.

You don't need MozBackup, you can just copy the profile to your new
