Frog, I seem to remember, at one time, somewhere here, you mentioned
that you copied your profile from an old back-up. Might this have been
from a CD?? If so, the files copied from CD's may have been marked as
Read-Only, which might explain why you are getting these results.

Close All versions of SeaMonkey and if you have the SM quick start
icon down near the Start button turn it off as well.

Now open you Windows File Manager and go to the profile that you are
having troubles with and right click on the inbox file and have a look
at its properties to see if it is marked as Read-Only.

If it is, un-check it and do likewise for the other files in the
profile, then go up a level and check and un-check those files, and go
up a leveluntil you reach a level where they are not marked as
Read-Only

Have fun.

Thanks for the message---

As I said in my earlier messages, my technical knowledge is limited.
Before I do something not so smart I will ask my questions. Are you
referring to Windows Explorer when you say Windows File Manager? If so,
all of the entries there from SeaMonkey through all of my accounts are
Read Only. I attempted to change one on them--the change simply
reverts back to Read Only. That is why I believe I must be in the
wrong place to make the changes.

Yes, Frog, I did mean the Windows Explorer when I mentioned the Windows
File Manager. Try going up the chain of files until you find one that
doesn't have the Read Only property set, then go down the chain one
level and see if you can make these files un-Read Only, and then the
next layer down and the next and so on!

Thanks for your help and thanks for not abandoning me.

I did as you suggested, and nothing was changed in the Go drop-down
window. Also, after making the changes, all of the green squares in the
box preceding Read Only reappeared. I did have two new observations
during this try, that I had not observed previously.

I noticed that the box in front of Read Only can be changed to a check
mark in addition to the green square and blank. I really don't know
what the difference is between the green square and the check mark, but
I tried all three possibilities without success.

During the process of making the square blank in front of Read Only
and clicking Apply, I was confronted by a second window. On that
window I clicked OK to Apply changes to this folder, sub-folders and
files. At that point is where I observed something that I hadn't seen
before. On Documents and Settings and the Frog folder, I observed a
Confirm Attribute Changes window (where I chose Apply changes to this
folder, sub-folders and files) followed by another window Applying
Attributes). In this window I observed a bar portraying some action
being taken. This bar was visible for maybe three seconds and then
disappeared. All of the other sub folders to Frog had only the
Confirm Attribute Changes window.

In any event, I continue to be in the gray

I believe you are right. Considering you did your current installation

your profile.

What I'd recommend is, uninstall 2.0.3 and then delete its profile
altogether(be careful to remove *that* profile, and not 1.1.18's!)—it
won't matter since you haven't used it and whatever it contained is
still in your 1.1.18 profile. Then reinstall 2.0.3 and it will create a
new default profile, offering you once again to import your 1.1.18 data.

Well, my report is not good. I removed 2.0.3 via the Add\Remove
process. I next made a visit to Windows Explorer where I removed
SeaMonkey on from the following string:

C:\Documents and Settings\Frog\Application Data\Mozilla\SeaMonkey...
I then reloaded 2.0.3 back on my computer. I did not modify any

Do you use the three-pane layout for the Mail Newsgroups application?
If not, can you try it? (in SM 1.1.X it was at View - Layout - Classic
View).

With this view, do you have anything listed in the left-hand pane? This
is where Accounts and News Servers are listed.

Are you able to click on the tree entry representing your e-mail
account? Does it show the set of operational links in the display
window (with links like Read messages, Compose a new message, etc.)?

Can you expand that tree node entry and see a list of your mail
boxes (Inbox, Drafts, Sent, etc.)? Can you click on these and
view their contents?

Can you expand the tree node entry for a news server and see the
groups to which you are subscribed? Can you click on one of these
groups and see the messages in the right-hand side?

You don't have to go through hundreds or thousands of files one at a

Just FYI, my top-level SM 1.1.X profile directory also indicates Read
Only when viewed in Windows/Explorer and my application is running
normally.

Note that when I view the properties of individual files (not
directories),

they don't show as read only. Perhaps checking the directories is not the
correct approach?

I'm running Windows/XP SP3, btw.

Items on my system are the same as your system--the profile directory
level indicates Read Only when viewed in Windows Explorer and the
files listed under the profile are not Read Only. This fact is true
for both versions of SeaMonkey.

Well, it seems clear that this is not your issue, the problem lies

Frog, I seem to remember, at one time, somewhere here, you mentioned
that you copied your profile from an old back-up. Might this have been
from a CD?? If so, the files copied from CD's may have been marked as
Read-Only, which might explain why you are getting these results.

Close All versions of SeaMonkey and if you have the SM quick start icon
down near the Start button turn it off as well.

The only thing I did, subsequent to installing 2.0.3, was to establish
ICONS on the Desktop for both old and new versions of SeaMonkey, and I
copied/pasted, from a USB connected hard drive backup made on 2/15/2010,
the start-up information for 1.1.18. The original ICONs and start-up
information for 1.1.18 was removed by Seamonkey 2.0.3 asit was being
installed. I have done nothing, other than the two ICONs (browser and
mail) for 2.0.3 since it was installed.

Frog

-What role does the Profile play with regard to Mail and Newsgroup
Account settings? It appears that my accounts completed migration from
1.1.18 to 2.0.3. I say this because I can see (in gray letters) all of
my accounts in the Go drop down window. I can also open up my
default profile on 2.0.3 and find all of my accounts listed.

I have used every other aspect of the new SeaMonkey 2.0.3 software, that
I routinely use, and have found no other problems. I can download
personal mail, can access the web, can delete mail, can compose mail,
can open mail, etc. I can do everything I routinely do on 2.0.3, that I
previously did on 1.1.18. The big problem, however, is my inability to
access newsgroups as I did on the old system. That is why making the
Go button on the mail page work is so important. That is where I would
click the newsgroup I wanted to visit. Clicking an item in the drop down
window would close the account previously in use and open the new
account.

The bottom line at this point is--
I don't know whether to remove 2.0.3 and reload the software,
create a new profile or
make a change in about:config (with instructions).

I think that sums up where I am at this point. I sure hope

Close All versions of SeaMonkey and if you have the SM quick start
icon down near the Start button turn it off as well.

Now open you Windows File Manager and go to the profile that you are
having troubles with and right click on the inbox file and have a look
at its properties to see if it is marked as Read-Only.

If it is, un-check it and do likewise for the other files in the

up a leveluntil you reach a level where they are not marked as
Read-Only

Thanks for the message---

As I said in my earlier messages, my technical knowledge is limited.
Before I do something not so smart I will ask my questions. Are you
referring to Windows Explorer when you say Windows File Manager?

That seems like a reasonable assumption and the one I would make.

If so, all of the entries there from SeaMonkey through all of my
accounts are Read Only. I attempted to change one on them--the
change simply reverts back to Read Only. That is why I believe I
must be in the wrong place to make the changes.

If the profile is located on a CD, you can't change file attributes. If
it's on an ordinary hard disk drive, you should be able to.

With SeaMonkey closed, of course...

In Windows Explorer, select the profile directory (the one above
.slt, where is a random assortment of numbers and
letters) and right-click the folder name. One of the options should be
Properties. Choose that.

The dialog that appears should have checkboxes as follows:

Attributes: [ ] Read-only [Advanced...]

[ ] Hidden

Click the Read-only check box once to clear it, or more than once if
necessary, but don't double-click it. Then click the Apply button at
the bottom. Windows will prompt you, asking whether to apply the change
only to the folder itself, or to the folder and all its contents. Tell
it to apply the change to all the contents. After a minute of thinking,
it should mark each and every file and subdirectory within the profile
as read-only.

You don't have to go through hundreds or thousands of files one at a
time by hand.

Me, too.

A thorough examination of my system shows that all the /folders/ in my
profile have gray (not black) checkmarks, which normally indicates that
some of their contents are read-only and some are not (I suppose it
could also mean the attribute is not set for these folders). However,
all the actual /files/ are not read-only. This is with system and hidden
files and folders revealed.

Still, if the OP wants to clear the read-only attribute quickly and
easily after copying from a CD, the technique I described is the way to
go. Fast, easy, painless, guaranteed to work.

My profile for 1.1.18 is on my C: hard drive. The new migrated

associated with either version that is on a CD. I do have a Feb. 15

This process does not work on my system. I made the changes as you
suggested. After making the change, I went back to see if the Read
Only was deselected. To my surprise, the Read Only was again
selected. I attempted to make this change several times with the same
results. I then made a visit to 1.1.18 and Read Only was also
selected in this version, and the items in the drop down window under
Go were black and respond to my mouse clicks.

Items on my system are the same as your system--the profile directory
level indicates Read Only when viewed in Windows Explorer and the

the 2.0.3 software to be installed in the default locations--I made
absolutely no changes to this process. My operating system is
Windows XP SP3.

Problem 1:
I am having a problem with the entries listed under Go when I am
looking at the 2.0.3 mail window. Here is the problem:

When I click Go at the top of the screen (the line just under the blue
banner)I see the following:

Next
Previous
___
Mail Start Page
___
f...@pond.com
Local Folders
Microsoft Help
Mozilla Help
etc.

All of the letters for Next and Previous are in black letters and the
remainder of the entries are in gray letters. I need to know how to
make the gray letters black so that I can click on them--so that they
will take me to the items clicked. Any suggestions?

I have used a big part of my day today reading web pages/old messages
etc. in an attempt to find the answer to my problem--no joy. I now
have a few questions, that reach far beyond my technical skill level.
Here are those questions:

-Could it be that some setting is wrong in about:config. Don't
get excited about my doing any changes in this area--I know better
until some technically smart person informs me what I should do. I
just was wondering, if my problem might be in this area.

-Why is it that I cannot find any information about the Go
button that exists on the Mail page? I thought maybe I could come to
a conclusion about the source of my problem--possibly a corrupt
profile or an error in the 2.0.3 software download.

-What role does the Profile play with regard to Mail and Newsgroup
Account settings? It appears that my accounts completed migration
from 1.1.18 to 2.0.3. I say this because I can see (in gray letters)
all of my accounts in the Go drop down window. I can also open up
my default profile on 2.0.3 and find all of my accounts listed.

I have used every other aspect of the new SeaMonkey 2.0.3 software,
that I routinely use, and have found no other problems. I can
download personal mail, can access the web, can delete mail, can
compose mail, can open mail, etc. I can do everything I routinely do
on 2.0.3, that I previously did on 1.1.18. The big problem, however,
is my inability to access newsgroups as I did on the old system. That
is why making the Go button on the mail page work is so important.
That is where I would click the newsgroup I wanted to visit. Clicking

an item in the drop down window would close the account previously in
use and open the new account.

The bottom line at this point is--
I don't know whether to remove 2.0.3 and reload the software,
create a new profile or
make a change in about:config (with instructions).

I think that sums up where I am at this point. I sure hope somebody
will come to my aid before I go crazy--if I'm not already there.

Have you tried switching to another theme-just a thought. I am using SM
2.0.3 and Win xp pro and walnut theme and all works as it should.

Thanks for your message.

How do I switch to another theme? I also am using Windows XP Pro SP3.

The following is the remaining part of this call for help that has not
been answered. I thought it might help to get everything else out of
the way, so it would be easier for people to get to my problem. Here
is that problem and some of my comments.

There are many good themes and I did not mean you should switch to
Walnut. Try going to View when you have a web page up and at the bottom
select apply theme and choose the one not checked and click on it. It
will say it will apply when you restart SM -do that and see if it makes
any difference, if not you can change back redoing it with the other.
Little Seamonkey,Walnut,Pinball,Sky Pilot are just a few of the themes
you may use and switch back and forth as some people like some better
than others as far as looks or buttons. Also you might try reinstalling
SM 2. Hope you get it fixed.

Since the OP is using the default theme, what do you think are the
chances that this will actually resolve his problem?

I'm afraid this may just be a wild goose chase which will require
a significant effort on the part of the OP to try.
