No messages since March 26th... until today April 3rd?

2012-04-03 Thread chicagofan
Am I the only one who has received NO messages in this group since March
26th?

I'm wondering if it's eternal-september.org, OR if it's because
yesterday I unchecked the hardware acceleration option, after reading
elsewhere about Chris' site and comments there. Has anything changed
about the Mozilla support server?

Perhaps you are. There's been dozens of posts in this group since the
26th.

It isn't eternal-september, because that news server is not involved with
mozilla groups at all. Mozilla newsgroups operate via giganews in a
private sort of way.

Maybe it is your anti-virus application getting in the way? Why are you
scanning outgoing news (and probably email) posts?

Mea culpa! Eternal-September is my other news server and I had a brain
lapse... forgot this one group is not on that server.

It's not an AV problem, and Avast is on default settings, except for
timing of updates. The only recent change, is the one mentioned. I
turned off acceleration, because I read other people were having
problems with it... and VOILA... SM support group came back. :)

Coincidence?

Still ... there's no need to scan in/outgoing messages. There is the real
chance that such scanning can corrupt your mailboxes. I don't know why
"acceleration" would keep you from receiving posts for a week, in only
one newsgroup.

When exactly did you turn it ON?

I'll check their options. although I don't think it has anything to
do with this. :)

Neither do I. I just read about other people having problems with it
yesterday,

and decided to check my settings and change them, if it was on.

When exactly did you turn it ON?

It was on when I downloaded SM 2.8 several weeks ago. I don't remember
if it was on in 2.72 previously.

So, it's been ON since several weeks ago, but you only stopped receiving
posts in this group on March 26th. Then likely the "acceleration" was not
the issue.

There could be a myriad of reasons why it failed, for a few days - and
the most likely seems to me to be a discontinuing of accessing the group,
for some reason or another. Perhaps an errant "Mark All Read" or
something.

All I know is after turning it off, I could see messages here again. :)

I don't remember the problems other people were having, or at what
sites, but something I read at DSL reports after the announcement about
Chris' site being updated and available made me decide to uncheck
acceleration yesterday.

Maybe I was blacklisted? :)
