Re: More problems with Chase bank website

2016-08-27 Thread Ed Mullen

On 8/27/2016 at 8:03 AM, no...@nonospam.org's prodigious digits fired off:

It has been widely reported that chase.com will no longer allow access
with SeaMonkey.

The workaround has been to use the User Agent spoofing function of
PrefBar to tell the site Firefox is being used.

This works, but only up to a point. I can login, look at account
balances, download activity, and pay bills for existing payees.

But in the Manage Payees area, I needed to delete one payee and edit the
information for another. Clicking on the appropriate buttons for these
functions did NOT work.

I logged out and closed SeaMonkey, then started Firefox v48 and logged
into the site again. This time, the functions in question worked correctly.

Bottom line: Even though you can spoof the browser identity to access
the website, there is some difference between SeaMonkey and Firefox
which prevents SeaMonkey from being totally functional at chase.com

Since there could also be other issues that might not be obvious, I am
reluctant to continue using SeaMonkey to access this site. :-(

John

Any add-ons differences between SM and FF? Have you tried Safe Mode?
Javascript enabled? Allow cookies? Clear cookies?

No, this will not solve your problem with Chase; but it might help you
avoid this problem.

My father owned an independent furniture store. His inventory came from
local manufacturers and from local representatives of non-local
manufacturers. He did not need the services of a mega-bank. Instead,
he always used a small, local bank. He said that he wanted to bank
where the employees -- especially the branch manager -- recognized him
and knew him by name. This was all before the advent of the Internet.

Today, I bank at a small, local bank. I also have an account at a
credit union. I have no problems doing online banking through SeaMonkey
with either institution. Traveling in Europe, I had no problem using my
credit union's Visa card; and my wife had no problem using our bank's
Master Card.

I suggest that, if you do not use all the services of Chase, change banks.

How far does the user-agent spoofing go? I use User Agent Switcher, and
I noticed that the available database with fakes leaves blanks. The
user-agent itself is filled in, but app code name, app name, app version
and platform are left blank. If there is code that uses javascript to
do more poking into the user-agent and it finds blanks, it is obvious
that this is a fake. Fill in the blanks properly and the whole thing
looks normal.

You assume too much. Chase is the LOWEST FIXED credit card interest
rate of all banks I have cards from or have looked at. Plus, I have a
HIGH credit limit at Chase on my Slate card. Certainly, no local credit
union would offer anything like Chase even with my 822 FICO score.
Local credit unions offer dinky credit cards and NONE offer FIXED rate.
I have three local credit cards from local banks. My Chase non local
card is the only one with a very low FIXED interest rate and three times
higher credit limit than my local cards.

So, it is a matter of what bank offers the best card and that is never a
local credit union in my experience and I do belong to the highest rated
credit union here since the early 70's.

As for faking the UA, I do that with User Agent Switcher and fake as Fx
40. Chase is perfectly happy then and I haven't found anything I can't
do using SeaMonkey at Chaseonline but maybe I will find something
esoteric some day. I avoid paying bills the way notme does (as it is
too iffy) so maybe that would not work for me either, I don't know. But
what I do need to do at Chaseonline, since Chase first started their
online banking many years ago, I can do just fine on SeaMonkey. It is
scary though that Chase is so ignorant and makes it so easy to fake
another browser as the acceptable Fx. They allow all the way back to
Fx16! Yet get upset at SeaMonkey 2.40. (Plus, they are so backward
how they handle not recognizing your computer each time).

Since I pay off ALL my credit cards monthly, interest rates on credit
cards are meaningless to me. I feel that financing short-term living
expenses with long-term debt is definitely NOT the way towards financial
security. As for earning "points", my credit union no-fee Visa card
earns 1% back on ALL purchases.

In any case, I have yet to find a bank -- large or small -- that has
interest rates on loans lower than either of the two credit unions where
I have accounts. My home-equity line of credit is 0.4% above prime,
currently 3.875% with no fees.

I just checked the JPMorgan Chase Web site. After low or zero
introductory rates, the minimum credit card interest rate over all of
the eight varieties of personal and business credit cards is 13.24%.
Premier America Credit Union has a Master Card with a minimum rate of
7.50%, and Unify Financial Credit Union has a Visa card with a fixed
minimum rate of 8.99%.

Yes, those are Chase's current rates. I've had this card with them for
over 20 years. Chase, I don't think, has any fixed rate cards either
currently.
