The original problem turned out to be that he'd accidentally entered a
password into a non-password box, and then SeaMonkey was offering the
password in the drop down. I was able to use the tip above to delete the
unwanted value while not affecting other forms.

While looking into this, I also found many more sites that provide a
user-name and password log-in facility on a page that is NOT SSL.
Sometimes that page you land on after logging in is SSL, but not the one
where you are typing the password.

 Hi,

 SM 2.0.11

When you fill in a form in SM, it remembers the values, and when you
navigate back to that page it will offer you the values as you start
typing. I don't remember it doing this in early 1.x builds. It can be
 very handy.

Anyway, on a friends computer, it seems they have accidentally typed a
password into a field that's not a password field, and it now pops up
the password in plain text when they re-visit the page! Unfortunately,
this computer is hundreds of miles away, so I can only try to help by phone.

 I have two questions:

 1. Can I clear remembered form values without clearing other saved items?

 2. Is it possible to turn off the feature that remembers values in forms?

 Thanks.

On the SeaMonky menubar, select [Edit Preferences]. On the
Preferences window, select [Browser History] under Category (on the
left side of the window). On the History pane, make sure that the
Enable form and search history checkbox is NOT checked. Select the OK
button.

Finally, you might clear data on terminating SeaMonkey. Again, on the
menubar, select [Edit Preferences]. On the Preferences window, select
[Privacy Security]. On the Privacy Security pane, make sure the
very top checkbox IS CHECKED. Then check the other checkboxes per your
personal preferences. Remember to select the OK button.

[The above is from a reply I posted only two days ago to the thread
filling out forms. You really should read some of the other threads
in this newsgroup before asking a question that has already been answered.]

Thanks, this is very helpful and I'm sorry I didn't see the recent
similar thread.

I also did some further testing, and notice that not all web sites
remember values that are typed into form fields. Could it be SSL vs
HTTP? I then noticed that if I go to BT (the UK phone company), it has a
log in box on the right, and this site does NOT appear to be SSL -
unless they've got SSL buried in an IFRAME or something? I thought you
were not supposed to enter passwords into forms unless it was SSL?

Anyway, on the friend's computer, he was logging into a bank and I'm
sure it must be SSL enabled, so I'm wondering, perhaps there's something
else going on. I thought it was just SM remembering values...

Some sites claim they can get user IDs and passwords encrypted on
non-SSL pages. I don't believe it and am cautious when using such pages
to login. User IDs are okay on non-SSL pages, but I weigh what it is
that I am protecting with a password if it is requested on a non-SSL page.

Thanks! That explains a lot. I did look in the help file, but didn't see
this info. This also explains why I thought it had changed between 1.x
and 2.x

The tip about being able to delete specific values is really handy; I've
just tested it and it works as expected.
