SM 2.02, Ubuntu, heavy CPU load
Upon upgrade af SM to version 2.02 this morning I notice that SM is - still - rather slow, like it was in the previous releases. I've installed the GTK distributions on my Ubuntu 9.10 work station equipped with 4 1.60 GHz processors and 4GB RAM. While working, for example saving a mail/news posting, SM will sometimes for a while take more than 50% CPU; and even while idle will inbetween take 20% CPU. During startup SM can take up to 98% CPU. It may influence the CPU load that I use to have half a dozen browser tabs open? I've got the figures above by monitoring SM through Ubuntu system monitor. It's my overall subjective experience that SM reacts slowly (sometimes more, sometimes less) in spite of sufficient PC resources. Do others share that experience? I'm using SM anyway due to its obvious other qualities for me as a former Netscape user:-) -- Christian Mondrup, Archive Editor WIMA: Werner Icking Music Archive http://icking-music-archive.org/ ___ support-seamonkey mailing list support-seamonkey@lists.mozilla.org https://lists.mozilla.org/listinfo/support-seamonkey

Can be solved by backing out a certain patch, but on the other hand this patch is quite useful, so i don't like that solution. ;) For me i have solved the issue by setting '[x] Delete messages more than 60 days old' under 'Synchronization Storage' for each of my news servers. Here's a log from the time in which i had the problem. http://triffids.de/pub/sm/2.0/load/smlog.txt Hartmut ___ support-seamonkey mailing list support-seamonkey@lists.mozilla.org https://lists.mozilla.org/listinfo/support-seamonkey

Thanks for the tip. It looks like changing to these settings has had some effect on the 'slowness' - subjectively experienced Here's a log from the time in which i had the problem. http://triffids.de/pub/sm/2.0/load/smlog.txt for comparison I've uploaded a similar log as http://www.icking-music-archive.org/cmo/musik/outgoing/sm.2.02.log The average CPU load is 30% Isn't that rather high for an application like that? Christian Mondrup: Thanks for the tip. It looks like changing to these settings has had some effect on the 'slowness' - subjectively experienced On my icewm i have a little window in the taskbar which monitors the CPU-Load. It was easy to see the high load in the intervalls when new postings were automatically fetched. After the checkin of the aforementioned patch. *g* Since removing my previous '[x] Don't delete any messages' this hasn't occurred anymore.
