Only Flash is supported in 2.53.1. Mozilla removed NPAPI support after 52. One
thing I actually agree with them but I would have kept java and removed Flash
first :)

I don't do development without being paid. Oh wait wrong. I lied :)

After a few days I would say 2.53.1 is imho mostly release quality. Any
problems with it won't go away with the final. There is a bigger problem with
downloads not correctly intializing when starting with the -private switch but
this will probably not be solved for 2.53.1. Hadn't even time to file a bug
yet. No one else filed a bug against it too so we will put some already
earmarked minor patches into the final and be happy with it.

So you don't use Windows 10 (home edition)?
Microsoft have changed their policy recently but for a long time users
of the "home" edition were being forced into taking the upgrades,
something which essentially made them beta testers. Even better: major
bugs which had been reported in "beta beta" testing *still* made it to
production.

If you can find these links, you should be good.

Beyond that, if you haven't done so already, consider the Classic
Add-ons Archive: https://github.com/JustOff/ca-archive/releases.

The downloads there are a fairly extensive (although not totally
complete) collection of what used to be hosted at AMO. When you install
that in Seamonkey, then you can put:caa:list in the address bar,
allowing you to browse extensions, in the same way they were hosted at
AMO. Install what you find interesting. There's 19,000+ titles there.

I have PrefBar 7.1.1 running in 2.53.2 beta 1 pre (Build ID
20200106130007), and not having any problems. I'm not running any
modules, so I can't comment on that.

For this kind of thing, if you want to take a look at the newest version
without disrupting your current installation, something that is doable
is to install to a non-default directory, and then run with a profile
that you use only with the testing version. Although it's easier to do
this kind of testing in a virtual machine, I have done it before where I
run separate versions side-by-side.

If you do this, there's several caveats, and you want to work carefully,
primarily in making sure that your working version and the testing
version are installed in different directories, and you're using
separate profiles for each version. It's not essential, but not a bad
idea, either, to refrain from having both versions open at the same time.

And when in doubt, always make sure you have current backups of your
primary profile... :-)

The Mozilla url api changes from 57 and up are not in 2.53.1. They would bust
most add-ons dealing with uris and urls. 2.57 will have them but this is still
not near. Most calendar changes up to 60 have been ported. Please open bugs
against SeaMonkey not Lightning if you exprience a regression here. The
Lightning in 2.53.1 is/can not supported by the TB devs.

Does the old PrefBar extension still work with 2.53.1? If so, I have a
PrefBar button that launches Bookmarks Manager by requesting
toBookmarksManager();
What is the replacement for that? Do other modules have new names?

Is it possible the the FireFox equivalents of these add-ons could be
converted to work with 2.53.x when they would not have worked with
2.49.x at all? If so, this might provide a path forward.

Hi FRG,

In a previous post I reported that the add-on "Download Status Bar 15.0.0.1"
was not working in 2.53.1,
and you explained that Mozilla has taken out some API which allowed that
add-on to work in 2.49.5.

As per your statement above, should we assume that some improvement or change
has been applied to 2.53.1 which now allows "download dealing add-ons" to work ?

I am asking that because I use this add-on a lot and at this moment that is
the only thing preventing me to move to 2.53.1.

Thanks and best regards,

Rubens

The Downloads api totally changed. It was previously implemlented in c++ and
is now done via javascript.

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=888915

Firefox switched to it in 24 and the old one was taken out by mozilla for 53
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1319762

Assume these old add-ons will never work again unless updated by the author.
Might even need further changes in SeaMonkey. I am not 100% happy with the
current state of the integrated download manager and the progress dialog still
has some problems too.

The bookmarks (places) api got a similar treatment. Not as drastic but the
result is more or less the same.

Other than this most should still work. Things like NoScript and uBlock
classic are essential.

Most add-ons should work fine. Themes probably need an update. Add-ons dealing
with bookmarks and downloads too.
