I seem to recall that you might need to download the newsgroup posts
onto your hard drive in order to do a search of the posts, because
the NG posts are not, normally, downloaded onto your hard drive!!

Note the reference in my above post to "local system archives. " The
emails ARE on my HD if I have read them, which I have.

And now, I must report that "Option" has entirely disappeared from
the drop-down box of search options, although all the other search

Yes, your emails are on your hard drive, but you said you were
searching this newsgroup and the messages are not.

You are reading the content from the server, only the Header is
downloaded.

First download and install SeaMonkey 2.48 released 2017-07-31.

<https://www.seamonkey-project.org/>

Then select the newsgroup Account > View settings for this account >
Synchronization & Storage, then click the "Select newsgroups for
offline use..." button and select the newsgroup, then try your search
again.

Duh!! I see I was getting myself a bit confused above. Thought I had
been able to search for content in the news groups previously, but I
think I was actually searching the subject line - haven't done it for so
long. Have set things for offline use as you explain above, can now
search the contents. Thanks for the heads-up..

Larry, as I understand it, this means that you are not allowed to
conduct a search on this server! (well, something like that!!)

However, all is not lost...

Down in the bottom right hand corner is what looks like a power

News servers such as news.mozilla.org have the XPAT support disabled, so
you won't be able to search on line in this news group. Instead of going
off-line, you can also check the "Search Local System" box in the upper
left hand corner of the search window. That let's you search whatever

Well, I've seen that check box but wasn't sure what it really did for

Haven't seen this in a bit, but first what it means. Chaining means
sending one command to a server, then sending another before the first
completes. With some server software this might allow multiple commands
to be running at once, but in general it just saves the time between
client and server interaction. Some servers don't like this, because it
could fill a network buffer, have multiple commands running at once, be
used for spamming, or "just because."

What to do? I thought there was a setting for this in the "server" part
of the account setup, but I don't see it. None of the servers I use
needs to have this changed so I didn't look all that hard, I thought I
remembered a checkbox in the server settings, but that might have been a
1.1.x thing, or even 1.0.x, I've been using Seamonkey a long time.

Thanks for any advice anyone might have.

Since you have a reason to look harder than I do, and now you know what
to look for, see if you can find anything related to chaining commands.
Or find another server if possible, or live with the message. Your choice.

Larry

Thank you, Bill. Good insight into the problem, so now I understand it
(within the range of my limited technical abilities!). Sadly, no such
check box. I'll investigate the possibility of a different server.

Thanks again,

Then I might just as well stay on 2.0.14 and wait,

Easier than:
1. - search messages
2. - Mark/flag all messages in list
3. - return to total list
4. - sort on marks/flags, to get all the messages
from the search contiguous
5. - Do whatever actions on selections from this

work flexibly anyway)
6. - Clear flags
7. - Fix up sorting, et.c. of the original message

8. - Grumble, grumble

Known, and fixed for the SeaMonkey 2.2 (due in ~1 month):
<https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=660882>

Unfortunately it was found too late to be fixed for 2.1.

Confirm w/Build identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:2.0.1)
Gecko/20110531 Firefox/4.0.1 SeaMonkey/2.1pre

Recommend filing a bug report. When you do I'll add to it noting the
same issue w/linux.

"2.1pre" (RC2) and search results--can't do much in "Search Messages" window

2011-06-09 Thread Bob Fleischer
I am running RC2 on Windows 7, 64-bit and find that when I use the
"search messages" window, there is very little I can do with the listed
search results.

Click, double-click, and right-click do nothing on a search result item.

While I can select any search result item, and highlight it, I can't
open it with the "Open" button. (I can however delete it with the
"Delete" button. "Open Message Folder" will open a new message window
with the message selected.))

This is stuff I used to do all the time with earlier versions of
SeaMonkey (such as 2.0), so this is very worrisome.

Does searching "body" look at more than the visible message?

In my experience, yes. It also looks at the alphabet soup used to send
graphics (do CTRL-U to see what I mean), so if you have an attached JPEG
that happens to "contain" your search string, it will be reported as a
hit. That's why it's a good idea to choose a string longer than a few
characters.

Also, is there any way to have Seamonkey highlight the searched word?
Or is there any other software that might do this for me?

Dunno. I just use CTRL-F (find) and CTRL-G (find again).

Thank you -- that works!

Using:

Build identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.1b3pre)
Gecko/20090122 SeaMonkey/2.0a3pre

And I search on 1/12/2009 I see a message that was sent (from Taiwan):

>From - Tue Jan 13 07:43:32 2009
Date: Tue, 13 Jan 2009 13:50:35 +0800 (CST)
Received: (qmail 34719 invoked by uid 60001); 13 Jan 2009 05:50:35 -

but my mailserver:
X-Apparently-To: via ; Mon, 12 Jan 2009 21:50:37 -0800

Display date on the message is 12 Jan 2009

Another (from Japan)
>From - Tue Jan 6 19:00:06 2009
Date: Wed, 7 Jan 2009 11:08:40 +0900
X-Apparently-To: via ; Tue, 06 Jan 2009 18:08:41 -0800

So I _think_ it is correct; I received the first on 12 Jan 2009 21:50:37
-0800 and the second one on 06 Jan 2009 18:08:41 -0800
my time.

Search Messages and Timezone

2009-01-23 Thread Bruno Escherl

Hello,

if I want to search for all messages from one day, using the "Date is"
filter in Search Messages, I get confusing results for Mozilla/5.0 (X11;
U; Linux i686 (x86_64); en-US; rv:1.9.1b3pre) Gecko/20090122
SeaMonkey/2.0a3pre

Date seems to be take from the original send date of the message while
ignoring the timezone. So e.g. bugzilla Mails for 22.01.2009 will start
at 09:00 und go to 8:59 on the 23.01.2009 (9h time difference).

The same search worked fine with SeaMonkey 1.1.14 for Windows, i.e. I
get all Mails I got on 22.01.2009 between 0:00 and 23:59 CET.

I first thought it could be a regression in trunk, but SeaMonkey 1.1.14
for Linux shows the same disturbing behaviour.

Has anyone an idea, why it doesn't work as expected under Linux?

Bye
