Sorry for the delay, but here the results
starting old profile in safe mode doesn't help: problem still exist
starting a new profile: problem is not present
in the new profile I added the pref.js from the old profile: problem is
present
So I have removed a line therein, tested , re-added it until I fall on
this
pref
user_pref("dom.disable_image_src_set", true);
removing it solved the problem;

Enter about:config in the address bar, dismiss the dire warning of 
disaster, search for "dom.disable_image_set", without the quotes and it 
should be set to false as default.

I use SeaMonkey 2.38, selected the Night skin, clicked the Download link 
in the pop-up that opened, got the Save file dialog box, clicked Save 
and the file downloaded with no problem.




Any idea?




Use Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled and try again.
