Mgrove,
I am interested in how you designed your system.Where I work we pay
renderer to haul away our WVO which is generated by three of our tenants that
are food vendors in our foodcourt.I was asked to take responsibility of
project to somehow clean up the WVO dumpster area since it costs us for
removal. The first thing I did was go to the internet and search waste
grease. That was one year ago.Since then I have experimented w/ different
methods. Last method was the two stage. I have since started to re-fit used
water heater to be made into solar water heater. Please e-mail me directly if
you can give me some advice on using water heater for WVO processing.

I have been trying to get the 2 stage method right . I still didn't quite get
it. I really need to get a successful batch right about now to boost my
confidence. I feel as though I have the right timing and technique . It seems
relatively simple to me .

Re: [biofuel] Re: Aleks' 'foolproof method' methanol reclaim

Mike,
I was processing 11 litres of WVO . When mixing methoxide I used 1100
ml. methanol with approx. 33.5 grams lye. It appeared as though it was all
dissolved. In the first stage I added half of that mixture. The next day I
added the second half.

I did add half of the methoxide , but it was after mixing the acid in for
fifteen min. I should have done it after five min. Would ten min. make that
much difference?

Re: [biofuel] Re: Aleks' 'foolproof method' methanol reclaim

2001-06-01 Thread KDe3198534

Mike,
When I purchased the methanol it was 99 , I used it a few times for one
litre batches doing it the old way from the book From the Fryer to the Fuel
tank. It worked fine for that. Then I read about this procedure and re-read
and re-read until I felt comfortable enough to give it a go. During first
stage I added just methanol after the initial heating of WVO. 1100 ml. first
mix for five min. then added the 11 ml. sulfuric acid, mixed for 45 min.
settle overnite. Next day heated first stage mixture added 1100ml methoxide
and mixed for 45 min. I am not sure what you mean , did I stop reaction by
adding methxide. exactly when do you mean add methoxide to stop reaction?
Thanks for any help you can give so I can remediate .

Aleks, I'm the one that failed w/ 11 litres of WVO that at room temp. is
liquid. Methanol was a few months old but was always sealed in fuel
container. The lye was also a few months old but still pretty granular.I used
1100 ml. mixed for 5 min. added 11 ml. sulfuric acid. WVO was heated to
approx. 140 degrees F. Mixed oil after adding acid , for 45 min. The next day
I added second stage sodium methoxide and mixed for aprrox. 45 min. w/ a
higher rpm. motor than I used for first stage. I allowed to settle through
the weekend. Mon. am. I had what appeared to be soap. The WVO I used had been
settling for sometime and the solids had settled to bottom. I used only the
oil that appeared to be translucent. It looked dry but may have had some water
in it. The WVO that I was going to use , I heated to 150 degrees F. ,let it
settle overnite but it did not seperate. So that is why I used the cleaner
looking oil .
Aleks I need some of your expertise here please

Hi James,
I recently processed 11 litres of WVO using the foolproof two stage process
and failed. I might have been using a too high of an rpm motor. I would like
to hear your procedure.

Re: [biofuel] Re: small diesels and filtering fat

2001-04-22 Thread KDe3198534

Steve ,
I am wondering if I can just seperate oil from water when it comes out of the
fryer. The next morning when the WVO has sat unheated for approx. 10 hrs.
Where I work I am able to collect oil directly from fryer. Normally the food
vendor heats it up to 350 degrees F before they dump it. Would it work for me
to seperate before they re-heat it?I put the heated oil in 15 gal. steel
drums with the lids still intact. I could fill the barrels with the heated
oil and put them in drum cradle horizontally till it cools down. With ball
valve in place could probably seperate it. From there I could transfer oil
through filter and re-heat to 140 degress F. and continue with first stage of
two stage acid procedure. It might seem like I am thinking out loud , but I
would really appreciate some input from the veterans.

2001-04-21 Thread KDe3198534

Todd,
I collect WVO from food vendor when the oil is 350 degrees , Using Aleks
method I wouldn't think I would need to re-heat the used oil for the water
oil seperation would I ? I think for the two stage acid method I should be
able to just let the WVO settle and after a day drain the water off. Is that
correct ? I am very close to be ready to do thirty gallon batches . What is
your experience?

I sent an e-mail to the Rodale Research Center in SE Pa. I don't live very
far from there and I was wondering if they currently do anything with WVO. I
can remember one of their mag. called New Shelter. They responded by saying
they are not involved with that.Let me hear more about Rodale.
