[Biofuel] re: Stir vs Pump Processing

2005-05-11 Thread Paul Tanner

Hi,

In my research on the use and manufacture of biodiesel, I've come across
the following web site:

http://www.me.iastate.edu/biodiesel/pages/biodiesel1.html

there it explains the chemical background to making biodiesel. There is
also a video at the end, and they use a stirring method, which also aerates
the reacting fuel mix... the university indicates this helps the
reaction..

hope this helps.

regards,

Paul.

[Biofuel] liquid glycerine

2005-03-30 Thread Paul Tanner

Hi,

I've been making Biodiesel (BD) for a few months, now.. using the Mike
Pelly method.. and a curious thing happened with the last batch (my batches
are in approx. 160 - 180 litres).. the glycerine was liquid after the
reaction. This is the first time this has occurred for me, all other times
the glycerine formed and settle in my tank, and was solid at low
temperatures.

I had measured accurately, the quantities of methanol, caustic soda and
volume of oil...( I had an interested observer, who can testify if
required!! :-) ) I watched the colour of the mixture change, as I was
agitating, from a light caramel colour to a dark molasses colour... then
observed the glycerine start to settle, as expected. At this time the
glycerine was quite warm, so was still liquid, however, I let the mixture
settle for a 2 week period and the glycerine has not set firm. maybe I
should not complain.. 'cos it was easy to drain out of the tank! :-)

Did the reaction not go far enough? Any further ideas on what has
happened??

regards,

Paul.

[Biofuel] Biofuels slogan

2004-10-19 Thread Paul Tanner

ummm.. thinking about a slogan, I'll propose the following:

Biofuels - Flower Power

I think its kinda clever..

[Biofuel] cloudy Biodiesel...

2004-09-23 Thread Paul Tanner

Hi,

I have been making some small trial batches of Biodiesel, and had pretty
good success.. nice reaction, clear fuel, then refined with washing etc
(water and vinegar).. still nice and clear..

however, I notice that when I made a large batch (approx. 175 litres) the
fuel at the bottom (after I had removed the glycerine from the tank)
appeared to have some sort of crystals at the bottom of the container, that
looked a little like miso soup.. cloudy at the bottom, clear at the top..

the crystals (I'll call them that, given that's what they look like - I
doubt they *are* crystals) dissolve back into the fuel, when the fuel is
warmed.. I thought this might be the normal higher cloud point of
Biodiesel...but they re-appear when the fuel is back to normal room
temperature.

just wondering if anyone has seen this too.. or could provide an idea as to
the cause.

many thanks in advance..

regards,

Paul.

Re: [Biofuel] Final Filtering BD

2004-09-21 Thread Paul Tanner

I currently use 2 filters (EFI car filters) either side of a generic fuel
pump to get to approx. 28 micron..

racor make a filter, which separates water, and filters down to 2 microns,
its model no. is 110A.. I'm picking one up on the weekend.. and fitting it
to my tanks, for the final filtration.

hope that helps..

regards,

Paul.

This is in querry as to what others are using for final filtering of the BD
as it leaves the wash tank as is being prepared for use.
I have read about 1 icron nad 5 micron filters but not one post that I have
been able to find gets specific as to what TYPE of filter is used. Is the
best avenue to take a water filtration unit with 1-5 micron filtration
capabilities ?
Any input is appreciated.
