[biofuel] Fair price for methanol

2004-06-25 Thread Steven Pfaff

So I ran across a guy that has a half-full drum of methanol in his barn. The
drum belongs to a buddy of his who says he'll sell it, make an offer. What is
a fair price for the drum and 20-30gal of methanol? I'm thinking around the
$40-$50 range. BTW, I live in Wisconsin.

[biofuel] Bio-motor oil?

2004-06-10 Thread Steven Pfaff

Is it possible to make motor oil out of WVO? I read in another thread about
using biodiesel in gas engines as a fuel additive, anyone know anything about
maybe using it as an oil additive? Good idea, bad idea?

Re: [biofuel] WVO in my Hummer

2004-06-08 Thread Steven Pfaff

Not sure about the coolant line heaters. I'm sure your plastic tank will be
safe up to, at least, 200 Deg, F. as for links to kits I found these on
veggieavenger.com

http://www.greasecar.com/
http://www.greasel.com/
http://www.elsbett.de/

 Good luck and have fun,

Hello Everyone, I'm new to the Bio-fuel scene.

I am planning on buying a heater kit for my 1996 6.5l TD Hummer Wagon.
I've been very intrigued in the WVO usage and would love to do my part
in helping the environment.

I've seen a couple heater kits, and I like the On demand inline heater
with the easily accessible filter.
I live in Phx Arizona, and right now it's a good 110 degrees during my
afternoon drive home from work. So I tried some SVO in my second tank to
see how everything would re-act, and it did great. No problems at all.
I'm now ready to buy a full system, and convert my 17gallon rear tank to
WVO.

Couple questions...

1.Are the Coolant line heaters hard to install?
It seems like it would be difficult to run the lines. Maybe someone
close would be willing to come over and help me out with the
installation? I'll of course take you for a ride.

2. The tank I have right now is hard plastic, Should I worry about it
getting too hot with the 170 degree WVO when it gets heated?
Or should it be alright?

Maybe some websites with some nice kits for sale? Or someone whom has
input on certain Kits.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Re: [biofuel] Home for the Processor

2004-06-07 Thread Steven Pfaff

  Luc,

Happy to hear you found a home for your processor. I am currently looking
for a new home for myself before I begin construction, however I have recently
accuired two electric water heaters. Not quite sure of the volumes of either
just yet as they have just been shoved into storage until the moment I wake up
the day after my move, I think they are 20-30 gallons and 40-50 gallons. I am
still looking for ideas for how I want to wash my fuel though. Do you by
chance have a link for the standpipe wash tank you spoke of? I'd love to take
a look at it. I am also building my processor after girl-mark's design.

   Thanks,
 Steven

biobenz [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
Having had the bright idea of building a Fumeless Processor on G-
Mark's design along with the Sean Park's Standpipe wash tank I was
in need of a compact way to house it all as I live in an urban
setting (an apartment) So I figured I would build a cabinet which
could accomodate the two side by side with storage space under for
22 liter pails, and the plan came together fairly well. The cabinet
is built, mostly painted, butthen the torpedo came in the form of
the landlord who insisted he did not want any closed cabinets in the
heated garage, even if it DID sit next to the Benz that I am paying
rent for. A home was needed, so I approached the organic farmer we
deal with on the weekend and it looks like the cabinet and it's
contents now have a home where there is electricity to power the
unit and water to wash with.
This may force my hand of sorts to use potassium hydroxide instead
of the easier-to-use sodium hydroxide as then he could use the by-
product as a crop fertilizer once the methanol is recovered (if I
understand it right), so there's something for everyone and everyone
ends up happy with the deal the way it SHOULD be, Ha! At first
though I will use the NaOH until I get a good grip, then move on to
the KOH once the confidence is well established.
Anyway, where there is a will there is a way, and it is often in
colaboration with others that the best results take place. (it also
helps to keep one's ego in check) :)

RE: [biofuel] Biodiesel Glycerin-to-Methanol Condensor plans

2004-06-03 Thread Steven Pfaff

How about just running the condenser coil through a cooler, or any container
for that matter, of ice water. A small 6QT cooler available at any
home/department store for $5 would work great. We use the exact same system to
chill a hard cider tap at the bar I work at. Never runs warm.

 Good luck,

home-brew shop or here:

Jorge,

I am only in the building process myself so I may not be your best resource.
This is the design I will be using to build my processors.
http://www.veggieavenger.com/avengerboard/viewtopic.php?t=332

Here is another example of a 5 Gal. processor
http://journeytoforever.org/biodiesel_processor5.html#methcondens

This is another similar processor to the fumeless model I will be building
http://home.swbell.net/scrof/Biod_Proc.html

This is, I believe, a scematic for the processor at the previous link
http://home.swbell.net/scrof/Biod_Proc.html

Basiscally you need at least one pump (item number 01479-1RAH @
www.harborfreight.com) and a pot or tank capable of holding the oil to be
processed, a source of heat, and a method of mixing. You will also need a
container for mixing the Methanol and Lye. I'm sure you have read most of the
information available on Journeyto forever.com. Another good site is
www.weggieavenger.com . That's about all I can offer, aside from the best of
luck. Have fun and be careful.

  Hi Steven

That's the waterpipes, right? Grey stuff. I use it with biodiesel,
for instance as standpipes in the processor and settling tank, where
it's exposed to the biodiesel, by-product, excess methanol, no

RE: [biofuel] Biodiesel Glycerin-to-Methanol Condensor plans

2004-06-02 Thread Steven Pfaff

Hello Gents,

Am I to understand that the methanol can be recovered from the entire
Biodiesel/Glycerin mix before decanting/separating? In doing this, do any
separation problems occur? I don't plan to break down the glycerin into it's
elements, rather I plan to use it as a degreaser/hand cleaner.

Dale uses vacuum as well. See recent Vacuum Pump for Condenser thread:
http://infoarchive.net/sgroup/biofuel/34041/1

Also, Dale's recovering the methanol from the complete catastrophe,
not just the glycerine cocktail. There are advantages and
disadvantages to that. Advantage would be that you get more back
(which otherwise ends up in the first wash), disadvantages that you
can't separate the by-product cocktail into it's components with the
excess methanol removed, should you want to do that, and that it
might leave a solidified by-product in the bottom of the tank once
the meth's gone, especially if you use NaOH rather than KOH.

Actually there is information on condensers at Journey to Forever, it's here:

http://journeytoforever.org/biodiesel_processor5.html#methcondens
Simple 5-gallon processor

I responded to a question about this recently, perhaps worth a read:

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info Steve. That's exactly what I was hoping to hear. I'd be
down for recoating a fuel tank.

Much appreciated,

About 8 years ago I had the gas tank for my Vespa re-coated. It was done
by guy who used to do Vespa repair out of his garage, so I have no idea
what material was used. It was around $60 for a 2.2 gallon tank as I
recall. Re-coating may be a cheaper option to replacing the tank. A
quick google search yielded several tank-coating products. Maybe seek
out a pro who has experience re-coating fuel tanks. Though according to
these guys:

you could very well do it yourself.

Just a potential solution to a potential problem.

Speaking of fuel tank issues, does anyone else have a mid- 80's Ford F-
series? I have a peculiar problem on mine. The fuel filler hose has to
pass over the frame to get to the fuel tanks. To do this the filler hose
runs essentially horizontal, so the fuel wants to flow back out and all
over the ground. My work around is to park the truck with the rear wheel
up on a 5 block, this tilts the filler hoses down hill. It works, but I
just want to know who to blame for this problem, Lame FORD engineers, or
the sheisty ~1500 lb. Camper unit that has been sitting on the bed for 2
decades.

RE: [biofuel] Early 80's Mercedes-Benz turbo diesel fuel tank problem (Flaking and clogging)

2004-05-29 Thread Steven Pfaff

Not planning on using a two tank system, at least not right away. I will
wait and see if I'm able to produce enough biodiesel to run b100 and if so how
the b100 runs through a Wisconsin winter. Thanks for the lead though, I was
worried I would be spending a lot more if I had to recoat either of those tanks.

I read a post a few days ago about a problem with the fuel tanks
on the early 80's Benz diesels, and I have some questions
regarding this issue. I am looking at buying two of four
 Mercedes-Benz 300D's years 1979-1983 (the '79 is a coupe and the
others are sedans). I suspect three of the four have been
sitting a year or more. I remember reading that something inside
the fuel tank was flaking off and clogging the fuel system. Is
this the actual inside of the tank or buildup of some sort? Is
it uncertain what this material is? Is it absolutely necessary
to replace the fuel tank in this instance? How long did your
vehicle run before the problem arose? Was the clog (obstruction)
in the fuel line/hose, or in the filter? I also remember reading
that the fuel tanks were of some difficulty to obtain, but
possibly only for certain models ie; wagons. How much did you
pay for the tank? Where did you get it? Did you do the repairs
yourself or did you go to a mechanic?

IDEAL would be a V10 TDI Volkswagen Tourag. 310hp 533ft/lbs. tourque(enough to

Re: [biofuel] Followup 82 mercedes 300td HELP! (DOUBLE THANKS)

2004-05-21 Thread Steven Pfaff

Thanks for that bit of info. I am planning to buy two Mercedes 300D's.
Specifically, a '79 300CD and an '81 300SD. I'll keep that in mind and most
definetly use it as a bargaining tool.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:List members,

I wanted to take a minute of your time to thank the list collectively for the
kind offers of assistance which numbered over a dozen.

Most all of the advice was very useful.

With that being said, I have learned something valuable that I feel the need to
pass on to those current and future list members who may be buying 80's model
mercedes cars.

The car I bought has a problem where the inside of fuel tank is flaking off
small metal fragments. A local owned, private Mercedes shop [mechanic named
Dietmar- go figure!] said this condition occurs when an older benz has been
sitting up for a year plus.

Dietmar highly suggested the replacement of the old tank. 300TD models have a
special fuel tank that can only be bought through a mercedes dealership. $550
ea! no aftermarket fuel tanks for the wagons! Dietmar said the 300D's are
easy to get new fuel tanks for however.

My suggestion for future benz buyers is this, buy the old cars, but only if
they have been driven daily and you are 100% sure that the car has not been
sitting for months on end.

---

the car also had a serious mold problem in the same fuel tank/ system.

Thanks, Michael

[biofuel] HEET

2004-05-06 Thread Steven Pfaff

I saw in another post that HEET gas line antifreeze is pure enough methanol to
produce biodiesel. I am planning to run my first test batch very soon but I'm
having trouble finding methanol. Does anybody know if HEET is pure enough to
use?

One more question about the Methanol. In the recovery process explained on
the Journey to Forever website (condensing the methanol out of the glycerin)
approximately how much methanol can be recovered?

RE: [biofuel] OT: anybody have a 1.6 VW diesel head or motor for sale?

2004-05-03 Thread Steven Pfaff

A few months back I saw a diesel rabbit come into a salvage yard that I
frequent. I have no idea the size or condition of the engine but I personally
turned it over. I have no idea if the car is still in the yard but the place
is called Sturtevant Auto Salvage - Sturtevant WI. The phone number is
262-835-2914. It's a long shot but at least a shot.

Ed Hall [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:Good luck you guys, I've gone through this

Rebuilt heads are $400-700.00. Be very cautious about he quality of a
rebuilt head, don't take it for granted that it was done correctly.
I asked around on a number of VW sights, nothing really came of it.
Used heads are a roll of the dice at best, about $150. Depending on the
condition, it may be another $200 the rebuild. Have a reputable diesel shop
measure and pressure test before you buy, runs about $30. Most shops will
tell you they can do the work but, they're really not set up for it, try to
find a shop that does only diesel work, trucks, forklifts... They'll have
all the right tools, gigs, manuals/specs and will have seen many VW heads
already. They'll disassemble and clean the head. They'll measure for the
amount of warppage and previous machining. They'll pressure test for
leakage. If the crack is between the valves, the head may still be
usable/serviceable, If the crack comes out of the prechamber it's done for.
I drove with a cracked head for over a year. It was supposed to be temperary
fix but, these darn heads are hard to find! I found the last head by pure
chance.
Most of the VW Parts shops are dealing in the 1.9L.
I did hear of a Co. that was casting/machining new heads for about $700.00.
I have no idea about how well they're working. Does anyone know?
If you find any working/rebuildable heads please let me know.
Good luck and thanks,
Ed

offtopic:

Does anyone on these lists in the US have for sale:
any of the following Volkswagen diesel engines or engine parts from the
Rabbit/Jetta/Golf family:

1. functioning (or at least not cracked) 1.6L, non-turbo cylinder head (12
mm bolts),
2. or a 1.6 turbodiesel motor in any condition
3. or a 1.9 (nonTDI) turbo motor/trans for sale,
4. or a crashed, cheap, parts VW with functioning engine from post-1981-ish
that is located within a day's hauling distance from San Francisco??

I'm working on my biodiesel site's landlord's truck (s brother';s cousin's
girlfriend's boss's cousin's) and we're a little stumped on how to proceed
with it, affordably, especially since we don't have a good core to use if
we're buying a rebuilt head.

He cracked the head on a nice engine in a truck he was planning on
eventually doing a major restoration job to, and he was additionally
planning on someday putting a turbo engine into this old little vehicle.
It's a tough call on where to proceed with it with the premature demise of
the current engine, and he is now considering an engine swap to a turbo or
1.9 canadian turbo engine if we can find one quickish. Cheap turbo engines
needing a rebuild= work for me.

also, does anyone in the SF Bay Area have VW injection pump timing tools
that I could rent from you (or buy from you) for the job?
