Re: [biofuel] Virgin Veggie Oil Prices?

2001-10-16 Thread wljohnson

These are more or less the same price quotes that I received for virgin
vegetable oil and WVO in Ga. Also restaurants are getting nervous due to
possible environmental issues. Some just out right wont sell WVO to
individuals.

The last time I checked was about six months ago with Cargill. At that time
I received a quote of +/- $3.80 or $3.90 per gallon if I purchased 55
gallons.

It's possible that the guy just wanted to get me off the phone or see how
serious I was. But that was Cargills price range.

Re: [biofuel] Washing the biodiesel

2001-07-31 Thread wljohnson

Hi Mike. There's a lot of excess flap on this site, sometimes not much
useful flap. Anyway, I haven't been producing bio-d very long but my best
result after washing has been about 60% bio-d. Not sure if I was having a
good day or if I did something wrong those days but my tractor ran without
a skip. Be sure that you allow the temperature of your wash water and the
temp. of your bio-d to be as close to equilibrium as possible before
washing. Be sure and check the PH level of your bio-d to compensate for any
excess lye or methanol. I usually allow my bio-d and wash water to set up
at least 12hrs before mixing to allow the temp. to equalize. On a nice
sunny day, I'll let the mixture set outside in the warm sun to aid in
separation (I'm still making small batches). Maybe one of the more
experienced producers can offer more suggestions.

I think that would be a very bad learning experience. A diesel engine fires
from compression, a gasoline engine, even a two cycle one fires from spark
plug ignition.

Re: [biofuel] Aldehyde and dioxin from biodiesel?

2001-06-29 Thread wljohnson

I'm not a chemist, so burning cooking oil may very well emit some dioxins.
Although I would not think the alderhyde content would be very high, if
any, providing the biodiesel is properly washed to remove excess
(lye/sulfuric acid) and (alcohol/methanol), depending on the process used.
However it is still my personal opinion that if burning vegetable oil (new
or used) in automobiles is not a good idea, then maybe we should not use it
to cook with either, after all we are what we eat.

they regular water heaters or are they special chemical heaters. I have

Re: [biofuel] me and my big mouth re: smalltimers

2001-06-20 Thread wljohnson

Ian, I think you brought up some interesting points. Although I have made
some small batches of Bio-d, I have often wondered what would I do with all
of the glycerin and wash water when I began making larger batches. When you
start making 100 gallons or more bio-d, it is no longer feasible to dump
the excess out back. So careful consideration will have to be made about
how to deal with the waste product.

RE: [biofuel] Digest Number 438

2001-05-17 Thread wljohnson

I would like to mention also that due to the design of some diesel fuel
pumps, gasoline would not have the ability to properly lubricate the fuel
pump parts. Diesel fuel is more viscid and due to the close mechanical
tolerance of pump parts the proper lubrication is essential.

In the state of Ga. red diesel is used primarily for farm equipment. The
only reason it is died red is so that D.O.T. can easily identify it from
highway diesel, (which is taxed higher).
