Re: [biofuel] Re: Reclaiming the methanol

2001-05-28 Thread zh24mij

Paul, one vessel would be great, but poses (at first glance) two
problems:
Time and batch quantity, which is to say that you'd be producing a
smaller batch over a longer period of time. Sure, it's compact, but for a
garage operation I'd prefer a multi-barrel approach allowing many batches to
be mixed, settled, washed and stored at the same time.

Just a thought!

Re: [biofuel] Water vs Energy Importance

2001-05-17 Thread zh24mij

Plentiful energy is currently the preserve of the rich (who waste it,
mostly). For most of the world, successful water projects are very
local, and low-tech. But there's no need to argue about which is more
important, of course they're both important, and both problems are
symptoms of an over-riding cause - an unjust and inequitable economic
system. If you can call such insanity a system at all.

Keith, when you talk about the inequality and inequity in the world
economy, what are your views on this? Basically, what do you mean?

Of course the rich waste, but to them they've earned it. If the rest
of the world isn't made up of servants, they say, let them rise up and be
rich. Self-fulfilling prophecy, I think. I wonder what your solution would
be, Keith- i'd just watch out for putting emphasis on supposed human
cooperation, goodwill and the urge to go further, faster. God, the
philosophy... I hate it. Why in the hell can't people just 'get along',
'love their neighbors', and learn how to live instead of consuming? Why, for
example, am I, a purty decent guy, not given options to either consume or not
consume? Most of us don't have a choice; most of us never will. The world
might not have a chance, and it's a curse to see the problem without even
knowing how to grind yourself into the gears for a start.

I'll shut up now, thanks.

[biofuel] Cleaning oil drums

2001-05-14 Thread zh24mij

Hello All,

Finally, sweet success! I found my first steel drum
today, the very nucleus of my biodiesel operation. Kudos to me, I must have
killed a coupla dinosaurs finding it. Anyhow, I think I probably need to
clean the thing, it was used to ship some kind of marble cleaner called
Thermaclean, a polymer (the label says). Any ideas of how to de-chemicalize
the drum? I can't wait to get started... Watch out OPEC, Jim's coming your
way-

Thanks,

Actually, guys, fuel cells were used as early as the first gemini and up
to the Apollos (which had no/few solar cells). Oxy and Hydrogen are combined
in NASA cells to make water and lots (many kilowatts) of electricity. Solar
panels in space are usually only good for station-keeping or low power,
long-duration operations. Just a thought...

Holy Cow!! How could Volvo say that? They should know better, if
everything you guys at the bio-board have said... I've known the company to
make a stand for the environment at every turn, from the early cold-weather
research to the lambda-sond to the LPG... Frankly, I cannot see VOLVO, THE
Volvo, missing something so obvious as the advantages as bio-d without them
being correct- Everyone knows that they're owned by Ford now, right? So, you
can figure Volvo=Ford, and if ford hates bio-d, so does Volvo. (Does it?)
I hope to hell there's a reason to hope that Volvo is wrong, and that bio-d
really is the miracle I was used to viewing it as. Hail Jendenuvaden!

-JIM

Bio-diesel is 10 times more carcinogenic than low sulphur diesel,
exhaust fumes smell like oily chips and running costs are inflated,
says Volvo.
Responding to a report by the British Association of Bio Fuels, which
promoted the fuel as the 'fuel of the future' Volvo claims Bio-diesel
is dirtier, smellier and less fuel efficient than low sulphur diesel,
and engines are more costly to maintain.

Despite the move by the Government in the recent Budget to make the
cost of Bio-diesel 20p per litre less than low sulphur diesel, Volvo
believes that fleets should think carefully before encouraging its
drivers to top up with Bio-diesel.

The most alarming statistic from recent Swedish research says Bio-
diesel emissions are 10 times more carcinogenic than standard low
sulphur diesel used in Sweden. Tailpipe emissions of 'smog forming'
oxides of nitrogen can be up to 40 per cent higher than diesel
engines. Combine that with a 10 per cent drop in performance and fuel
consumption when running on pure rape seed oil, the fact your car
exhaust will constantly smell like oily chips and the fuel's poor low
temperature performance and the future of Bio-diesel looks grim, a
Volvo spokesman said.

An explanation:
My post was a response (included below) to
someone who, in my opinion, was using the US gov'ment and the DEA in specific
as scapegoats in his discussion of hemp's reluctance in becoming a new
biofuel. I was aided in this conclusion by the post's lack of concrete
detail, sources, or even a cursory objective view. Hell, my response may have
been unfounded or spurious (or not), but I was just trying to get a response
as to why the information seemed a bit opinionated.
