Re: [biofuel] Boidiesel mixer
While used for stirring mash in an insulated tun rather than for biodiesel, my mixer may be of interest to others. The drive is an old windscreen wiper motor bought for £1 at a local sale. Its output ( on an extended shaft) is about 70 degrees of arc reversing in alternate directions. This gives a good degree of turbulence with a flat blade. In order to get some large-scale circulation going, the flat blade was replaced with a piece of 1 and 1/4 inch dia pipe, cut down the middle from each end not quite to the central axis. Opposite trough-shapes were removed from each half-blade. If that sounds complicated, just think of a cup anenometer :-) Now, when it rotates back and forth, there is a bias one way and we get both turbulence and circulation. The 3 amp fuse in my 12 V power supply has survived, and the motor is only warm after one hour of stirring. David Teal -- eGroups Sponsor -~-~ eGroups eLerts It's Easy. It's Fun. [biofuel] Boidiesel mixer
Keith, Sent the following e-mail to Simon Wells the other day following your putting details of his biodiesel mixer on the web but have not heard back from him. Would appreciate yours, Steve Spences, or anyone else who is knowledgeable comments. Thanks. B.r., David Hi Simon, Had a look at your biodiesel mixer pictures and read the article when Keith put in on the net the other day. Believe you have done a good job keeping it simple and that it should work well. One question though. I see you are usinga 1500 rpm motor and that you state the blade turns at about 800 or say 750 rpm using 2:1 reduction pulleys. By my reckoning this equals about 13 r p second which seems very fast to me. I would have thought about 1/2 that would have been more than plenty (420 rpm = 7 revs per second). Interested in your thoughts on the matter and why you have chosen this higher speed. At present have not yet made bio-diesel so have no practical experience but intend to shortly. Have I missed something or is there something I cant yet see. Re: [biofuel] Boidiesel mixer
Hi David I'm sure Simon will reply. If not I'll ask him. Terry de Winne reckons 700rpm is optimal. I'd've thought it might depend on the pitch and size of the fan, the size and shape of the container. At first I was using a much higher speed (electric drill) with a much smaller fan (and a smaller container), which worked fine. I think all you have to do is agitate it effectively. Here's the url, by the way: Simon's Guide to Building a Biodiesel Mixer http://journeytoforever.org/biodiesel_simon.html Oh, right, I see your other message - now you should get a reply.
