Have you tried Dyce?

Dyce Chemical Inc. -- 1353 Taylor Pl., Billings MT, USA (406)
248-3131 -- 99+% methanol in 5-gallon cans (expensive) or 55-gallon
drums (cheap).

I buy methanol from an industrial solvent supplier. There should be
dozens of them around Dallas. I pay $77 for 55 gal. in Little Rock.
You should find it cheaper there. Look in the yellow pages under
solvents. Or go here:

Thanks, Dale.

So I am talking to the wrong folks. Will report on results next week.
Was told that since most methanol in the US is produced with natural
gas that the cost has increased recently by $20 a 55 gal drum.

Excluding labor, is the 50 to 70 cents range what it is costing you
to produce biod?

Have searched the archives but didn't find any info on the cost of
production. Keith, do you have a link/source for the cost of
individuals to produce biod?

Thanks,

JV

No I don't. 50-70c is probably about average. Richard Scee posted
this recently:

I don't know what feedstock he uses.

OK, here's the results of my price survey in Dallas, Texas on
02/12/01. These prices are for pickup at the warehouse in US dollars.
Found these vendors under Solvents in Yellow Pages.

(Called four vendors)
One drum @ 55 gallons - $2.16/gal to $2.48/gal = $119 to $136
Quoted last week from racing fuel vendor 55 gallons for $110

(Called four, only one sold in 5 gal can)
One can @ 5 gallons - $3.45/gal + $5.00 for can = $18 ($22 w can)

Consensus was that the price of natural gas was driving up the price
over the last couple of months.

Even with the increase, comes in at 50 to 70 cents per gallon for
boid. This excludes labor and energy in production process.

I have been making B-D for a year now, and I but meth. at $1.65/gal, lye at
$4 for 18 Ozs. So: 60 gals oil(free) 12 gals Meth.=$19.80+$8=$27.80 divided
into 60 gal product=46 cents.

Re: [biofuel] Re: Methanol Source

2001-02-13 Thread Greg Yohn

I buy my methanol from an auto speed shop. (Those of you unfamiliar with the
term or out of the U.S., it is a auto parts store that sells auto racing parts
and sells methanol used in those modified machines.) I get it for $2.50 a gal
in a Philadelphia, PA suburb.

Your price to make biodiesel is close to mine. I used to use 20% methanol per
liter of oil. Now, I use 13% and it works fine. My technique is a closed
system, thereby saving methanol. I use 5 gal jugs to shake up my lye, methanol,
and then my 120F oil. An open system probably would need 20% methanol, since
the meth would burn off in the reaction.
