Re: [biofuel] About to use some Rapeseed..!

2003-03-17 Thread Ken Basterfield

Sorry Nick,
The use of alternative fuels does not come completely duty free.
Non dino fuels are rebated by 20 pence per litre.
Customs and Excise Notice 179E has all the details.
Still even on a 3 litre trial there must be some satisfaction.
Good luck with your conversions.

Thanks Ed. I knew this was a little risky, and is certainly not a long-term
plan. Just HAD to know if it could be done!!
Our plans to run the vans on veggie oil permanently will come into force
soon :)
The satisfaction of doing our government out of 60p fuel tax was the best
bit though

One thing that will happen is that your cold starts will begin to
deteriorate. Then your filter will probably start plugging. Then your
injectors will likely, in time, get coked up. Then the spray pattern
will be wonky. Then you'll set the stage for ring sticking, glazing of
the cylinder walls, increased lube oil consumption and eventual engine
failure - if you can continue to get thing started in the morning. More
than 20% or so in the diesel is not a good plan for more than short
term "experiments".

Unfortunately, you're not doing anything new here, Nick, and if it was
as easy as running high percentages of SVO in diesel, and being able to
maintain reliability, we'd all have gone that way long ago.

Edward Beggs

Well, rapeseed oil and canola aren't *exactly* the same thing. Canola is
technically low erucic acid rapeseed oil. The eruric acid levels in
normal rape seed make it unfit for human consumption. Under 21 CFR
184.1555, low erucic acid rapeseed oil derived from /Brassica napus/ or
/Brassica campestris/ can be called canola oil. The Canadians simply
renamed it for marketing reasons. This is no more or less of a con job
than NZ marketing chinese gooseberries as kiwi fruit or simply kiwis in
the US in my opinion

IIRC, the EU requires the erucic acid content of less than 5% of the
total fatty acids to be called canola while the US requires the eruric
acid content to be under 2% to be called canola.

Re: [biofuel] About to use some Rapeseed..!

2003-03-17 Thread bratt

I have seen diesels running on rape seed oil at farm shows. They had an oil
warmer tank on one of them to keep it thin.

Knowing the history of rape as a source material for making plastics, I think I
would run it through the a bio-diesel conversion process to get rid of the
possibly harmful glycerides.

That would be a better use for it rather than eating it. Con artists have
re-named it "canola oil".

RE: [biofuel] About to use some Rapeseed..!

2003-03-17 Thread Nick Taylor (SMTechnology.com)

Hi guys,

Just to let you know that I stuck 3 litres of 'Tesco' (local supermarket) pure
rapeseed oil straight into the tank of my VW Caddy. Once the dino-diesel had
cleared the fuel lines, I was running on about 50% dino to 50% oil; (about 3-4
litres of dino in the tank) the only differences I noticed were A) the engine
ran about 10'c cooler; B) the exhaust smelt like a roadside burger bar ;)
Apart from that, no problems!
As the weather is finally starting to warm up here, I may increase the
oil/diesel ratio and see that happens.

Hi Steve,

I'm in the south west of England, and its pretty cold here at the moment (as
always!).
As I had about a quarter tank of Diesel, I thought I would get away with
just adding the oil (it would be heavily diluted in the Diesel), even maybe
popping over to the petrol station to fill up with Diesel too, to thin it
out even more?
I know this may sound weird to you all, its just that I have'nt got my veg
therm kit yet (still convincing the boss to get them for our vans!) and I'm
busting to run on at least a little sustainable fuel!

..in essence then, not a good idea?

what climate are you in? if it's over 80F, you may not have a problem. I
personally would not do it. always preheat veggie oil before injecting it,
always shut down on biodiesel or diesel to clean out the veggie oil.

Hi guys,

Here's an easy question for ya.
I just bought 3 litres of pure Rapseed oil form my local supermarket
(@0.66usd/ltr). I have about ¹ tank of dino Diesel in the tank (1998 VW
Caddy van).is it going to be safe to pour the oil straight into the tank
(mixing it with the Diesel) or am I about to do something really really
stupid? ;)

at best you'll clog your filter, at worst damage your injector pump.

Re: [biofuel] About to use some Rapeseed..!

2003-03-12 Thread Edward Beggs

The question is why? You just want to see if it smells like fries? To
see if it runs?

Answer, yes, and yes.

Now, you have to make the real decisions:

Two-tank? Yes.

Take your chances on the direct injection engines? Up to you. How long
do you plan to keep them around? If you are going to trade them in a
another year or two, then put on a two-tank system and get going. If
you plan to run them a long time and a lot of kilometers on vegoil,
maybe look at going further an investigate the idea of blending as well.
