A salamander is a type of gas-fired restaurant broiler that has an open
top - that is, unlike a normal broiler for home use, where the broiler
is is the oven, a salamander is a stand-alone broiler with an exposed
flame - perfect for warming up cold engine - sort of..

Saw some big as robins.
Later was told thems the small ones.
Natives carry a shotgun for the bigger ones.

I been to and through Minnesota a few times during winter and that is cold..
Bites right through your clothes. hell of a vacation.. You should try and
light one of those propane campstoves in that weather.. But the late spring
the year before was worse, couldn't light the stove for the flock of birds
buzzing around.. Later a native told us they were Mosquitos. Tennis racket
came in handy but we had to give up on the stove and find a fast food joint
instead..

>but by then we couldn't remember the context. a good idea even in warm

Well, okay, I'll own up - back home, when there still used to be such
a thing, was a rather pleasant Mediterranean-type place where we knew
a lot about heat but snow was picturesque-looking stuff on the tops
of distant mountains. We'd never seen it up close and nothing ever
froze over. Cold meant wet, and when it got really cold it also blew
hard, but stayed wet, and then we'd read in the papers with some awe
that an iceberg had drifted really close, less than a thousand miles
to the south. We'd mutter sagely that the weather was changing, as
people always will when things ain't wot they used to be, which they
never are, not even nostalgia, and now even the climate isn't - but
those folks still haven't seen a snowstorm, and almost certainly
never will. When I did finally experience cold, I couldn't figure why
people did it (even after spending an hour lying on my back on a bit
of frozen tundra watching the aurora). I still can't - why not just
go where it's warm? Beats me. You're right though - we didn't know
what the hell we were talking about, that much is true, and in this
instance I still don't: the context? Skiing at -40 F or C,
frost-bitten lungs and diesels. Naah. Not balmy enough.

The context I think of is what all the Indonesians, Thais, Indians,
Kenyans, Guatemalans and all the other folks who know enough to
choose a more sensible climate must think at this time of year when
all talk turns to how to keep your home warm and stop your diesel
getting frostbite. Many of them and all the Ozzies, New Zealanders
and South Africans are thinking of the slap-up dinner they'll be
scarfing in a week, in the midst of a blazing summer, made up of all
the very best sorts of food traditionally needed to keep Northerners'
innards warm and their hopes from flagging in the middle of a frozen
winter.

Best

Keith

I saw a couple of our hunting dogs out in the field with jumper cables
