Re: [Biofuel] Chicken Little Strikes Again! CO2 is rising!C02 isrising!A scientific Rebutal
This may seem high, but then when I think about that forest around my parents' property in eastern Washington, every piece of land surrounding us has been logged at least once in the last 25 years -- many in the last 10 years. From the satellite photo of the area (about 2 meter resolution) you can clearly see our property lines by where there are and are not tall trees. Yes, there are still 50 foot trees left all over the rest of it, but the 100 foot trees are mostly gone. Maybe in the Dakota's trees have increased alot, but how big are those trees? I grew up in the Northwest, and can't say that I've seen many trees in Colorado that really seem to count as trees compared to what I'm used to. If it's not 2 foot diameter and 80 foot high.know, I'm a tree snob, but from a carbon sequestration standpoint, the very large trees in the temperate and tropical rainforests, as well as the temperate broadleaf and boreal coniferous band, probably do alot more than the more arid forest that occupies alot of the rest of the world. And those ones are the ones that I think have been destroyed or "degraded" more. Zeke >> ... Thats a good point Joe I heard a deal on NPR about the worlds Oceans are absorbing most of the Co2 - albeit it is starting to cause more sinister problems as a result. It seems to stand to reason as it was algae that created the oil, that we are turning to carbon, in the first place. Re: [Biofuel] Chicken Little Strikes Again! CO2 is rising! C02 isrising!A scientific Rebutal
John, If your theory were correct then we wouldn't have an atmosphere and you certainly wouldn't be alive writing spurious emails. The greenhouse effect is a known natural phenomenon that has existed on earth for millenia - it keeps the earths temperature from falling too low (it would be about 60 degrees colder without the greenhouse gas layer in the stratosphere). If you still don't believe it then consider two facts. In the last 150 years or so we have dug up and burned one half of all the fossil fuel reserves on earth and burnt them. At the same time, 85% of the world's forests (which are natural carbon sinks) have been destroyed or degraded. So, the CO2 levels in the atmosphere have without doubt risen and the planet has got warmer through the augmentation of the natural cycle. Re: [Biofuel] Chicken Little Strikes Again! CO2 is rising! C02 isrising!A scientific Rebutal
John, It is called the "Greenhouse Effect". Clear glass does not block the visible area of the electromagnetic spectrum, hence light enters the greenhouse. When visible light hits a surface much of it (depending on color/texture of the surface) is converted to heat . something there in the Laws of Thermodynamics. The glass that allowed visible light to enter now blocks the longer waves. (To understand the analogy substitute CO2 in atmosphere for the glass in the greenhouse.) Perhaps you could plan a field trip to a greenhouse. If not, the same principle applies to a car in bright sunlight ... windows closed, temp in car is warmer than temp outside. (Not as effective using a convertible while the top is down). The concept of visible light being converted to heat when it hits a surface can be explored by standing in direct sunlight on a warm day then stepping into the shade. Try this experiment wearing dark clothing vs. similar clothes, but white. Temps of water in beer/soda cans in sunlight vs shade would provide similar insight into this particular "Law of Physics". Tomorrow we are going to explore the myth that cold water freezes faster than an equal volume of warm water. CO2 is rising! C02 isrising!A scientific Rebutal Doing an article to rebut this CO2 nonsense. It is so easy to refute. Anyone ever tell you people who are for this chicken little theory that C02 causes global warming that heat rises. The co2 theory defies the laws of physic. If Co2 is intercepting radiant enery from the sun and stopping that energy from reaching the surface of the earth, ice fields and oceans and then carrying that energy to the atmosphere, then CO2 is not contributing to global warming it is slowing the process of global warming ie it is cooling. Elimating or limiting C02 in the atmosphiere will actually increase global warming not the reverse.
