RE: [svg-developers] SVG dying?

2006-04-19 Thread Peter Schonefeld
Hi All,

> is SVG dying a slow death?

IMHO, No...and in support of David's post, if you check out the section on
this page (http://www.nngroup.com/reports/life_cycle_of_tech.html) titled
"Diffusion of Innovation" there's a useful diagram that maps the adoption of
technology over time. We could consider pre 2004 as the time for innovators
and enthusiasts; 2004-2006 early adopters (thanks to Firefox, Opera, vendors
in the mobile scene etc)...perhaps now we are entering the 'Chasm', a
transitional period where SVG must cross from being appreciated as 'cool and
clever technology' to being considered convenient to use and implement by a
much lager pool of potential adopters.

>From memory, to get from the start of the curve to the peak it could take as
long as 10 years.

So for supporters of SVG, now is the time (more than ever) to 'stick in
there'.

My 2c :)

RE: [svg-developers] Mars and svg specifications

2006-12-12 Thread Peter Schonefeld
Hi Michel,

This is a good point. I think that the benefits of using SVG as basis for
the PDF pages are somewhat diminished if Adobe's extensions break what would
otherwise be valid SVG and thus render in other viewing agents...so instead
of...

http://www.w3.org/2000/svg";>

...the following document would be conformant and developers working with
Mars would be clued-in as to what was Adobe and what was SVG spec.

http://www.w3.org/2000/svg";
  xmlns:pdf="http://ns.adobe.com/pdf/2006";>

Leonard, you mentioned in an earlier post that you would look into fully
supporting SVGT. How was the response from others in the Mars team to that?

[svg-developers] Implementations Site Update

2004-09-11 Thread Peter Schonefeld
Hi All,

Needless to say the svgi.org site is not yet ready. I missed the deadline
for SVG Open, the project having been a victim of my overly optimistic view
of how long something like this will take to put together properly.
Apologies for that -- but please bear with us, Michael and I are keeping
things running along at a good pace and the site will be ready in the
not-too-distant future.

Michael will post an update at the svgi.org site in the next few days while
I continue to work on the site itself.

Please don't hesitate to send any questions or requests to Michael
(www.svgfoundation.org) or myself off-list.

All the best!
Pete

Hi Renato,

>>Is there a way to capture the client's SessionID generated by an ASP

You could create a hash of the SessionId at the server and send that to the
client with the page containing the SVG or in the SVG itself (if it has been
dynamically generated)...then you could pass the hash back to the client
with the postURL or getURL and (at the server) check that it contains the
session id that you are expecting. I could post some code if that would
help.

I may be misreading your problem, but i find the following code works well
to clear out *many* child nodes...

while((c = editLayer.firstChild)!=null) editLayer.removeChild(c);

IIRC, Peter Sorotokin suggests this as the most efficient method.

If this is not the answer you are looking, some code snippets would be

RE: [svg-developers] Enterprise Application Use of Flash

2005-04-30 Thread Peter Schonefeld
Hi Rick,

SAP is a good market to work in because SAP is dug in deep in many large
companies with *BIG* SAP budgets. I haven't done it before, but i understand
that SAP expose their APIs to .NET and Java providers, so if someone wanted
to there's no reason why they couldn't build a web based front end
featuring SVG for SAP modules.

I've briefly seen SAP's out-of-the-box intranet offerings (before this flash
thing) and must say that i think they are a mess. So, as you are hinting, an
area for great opportunity SVG wise.

Thanks for the link :)

2005-05-21 Thread Peter Schonefeld
based on what i can see from the developer site, flex trial and from being a
long-term dreamweaver user...I'd be interested in learning more about Flex's
custom control creation and databinding capabilities, but over-all I don't
see myself laying prone with arms wide open to an expensive, proprietary
format without *full* integration and access to SVG, HTML and their DOMs.

Why should anyone settle for second best?

RE: [svg-developers] Re: It's Time to Cut Adobe adrift

2005-05-23 Thread Peter Schonefeld
Hey Rick! To me SVG has never been just a 'vector drawing platform'...that
just describes printer juice...rather, it's always been a way to represent
and manipulate anything 2D on the screen...including -- no -- ESPECIALLY
user interfaces. Let's face it, an application is never going to be defined
only by the technology used at the UI...but there is a need for something
that is as flexible as SVG and as easy to develop and create as SVG...and i
say this with a windows application developer's hat firmly squared on my
head.

I must agree that the place of XForm's in the mix hasn't gelled for me, but
check out sXBL...it is possibly one of the most simple and powerful specs to
come out of the W3C...it'll provide the glue that SVG needs at the UI.

Flex to me is SVG + sXBL + application backend of any flavor with it's wings
clipped. SVG is too bloody brilliant to remain hidden from view by limited
proprietary formats.

I think that's my 2c worth of comment...no make that 5c...i speak the truth
;)

RE: [svg-developers] tone on this list, Re: A Secret SVG underground Society?

2005-05-24 Thread Peter Schonefeld
i think it's good that people express whatever's on their mind. it's natural
that some of us we are frustrated at lack of movement in viewers (at the
desktop, not mobile)..this is how i keep my chin up (these are my happy
thoughts)...

ASV 3 is something i can continue to use today for intranet work, even
though it's difficult to use on the web because of distribution issues...

there's nothing quite as satisfying in web development as building dynamic
svg on the fly...

Will we find salvation in Firefox? nighly builds include SVG so this can
only be a good thing. I don't know anyone who hasn't been glad to switch to
Firefox from IE...

Opera, conqueror, Ronan's perl library, Steve's galactic pathways and many
others...I don't use these, but it's pretty cool that so many people in so
many projects are spending so much of their precious time working with faith
in SVG.

I do use a KDE desktop from time to time so v4 might open some
opportunities.

GoSVG looks super cool!

Mobile development is not my thing, perhaps only because i almost went mad
working three weeks at a 96 x 120 resolution on the plazmic engine that i
don't think it even exists anymore...but a lot of smart developers go for
the mobile scene...pda phones have been released in Japan so the display
size is getting bigger...

SVG and XAML are not mutually exclusive technologies...it's been said on
this list that if you know SVG then you know XAML.

While there is plently of uncertainly out there, we do have the knowledge
that SVG is a comprehensive and carefully developed grahpic specification
that shares all of the benefits of being a member of the XML family...i
think this means that any one organisation wanting to dominate with a single
closed alternative is not going to succeed in the long-term.

Well that's my rave. but one more thing, i suggest we cheer on the team
developing the 1.2 specification and let them know that we're here for the
long run...ready and willing to jump onto the next big full implemetation
that comes along.

As for the long term, the way i feel is that if i'm not using SVG to develop
GUIs in five years time then i won't be developing GUIs at all!!

NOW, my rave is really over!

[svg-developers] Purpose of the list.

2005-05-25 Thread Peter Schonefeld
Doug and Berend, This group has a good tradition for posting news, examples
and discussion threads as well as development help. As long as it's a
constructive post and relevant to SVG it is OK.

As Richard points out, a flashkit.com would be good for SVG...but right now,
as far as group communication goes and until a non-commercial alternative
surfaces...this is it.

Good point...with regards to svg implementations (svgi.org) site, when the
site goes live we will be releasing the directory in an xml format, so
anyone will be able display the directory anywhere on the web. We will also
eventually provide updates via RSS.

Pete

BTW: the preview site will be all test data and is just for feedback, so
please feel free to have a look around, register and add to the
directory...implementors please note that any entries in this version will
be deleted when we go live with the finished site.

AFAIK the gzip content will need to be served with a file extension .svgz
and a HTTP header:

Content-encoding: gzip

Which will be a difficult requirement to meet if serving from IIS. Also, if
i understand the spec correctly, the .gzip exention should be optional.

>>you won't need the svgz extension, in fact you can serve it with any
extension you want, as long as its send as "image/svg+xml"<<

While I realise that the .svgz should be optional, I'd heard that the above
were specific conditions of the Firefox implementation, but as I haven't
been able to get any gzipped svg files to work at all with any extention and
with or without the header, it might not even be implemented yet!?

>>because of the last fact, in iis you can turn on content encoding for
all content of a site, upload normal unziped svg,
and IIS will send your svg files ziped, with content encoding set, and a
normal .svg extension.<<

True, but what if you don't want to compress all files on the server, but
instead manually gzip a few? Which is what you need to do if you have a
commercial ISP or don't have admin control of the server. So in this case,
you wouldn't be able to control the endcoding header at the file level and
firefox will not render it...

...anyway, it's all academic until we can find out for sure what the go is.

However, a good thing about this group (with almost 7000 members!) is that

RE: [svg-developers] Re: sXBL, loading using JavaScript

2005-06-10 Thread Peter Schonefeld
Hi Holger,

If you use a handler on the xbl:bound event for a particular binding, don't
you (as the binding's developer) have script access to the the custom
content and also full control of relevant shadow tree? So the document
author need only write:

10
20

or

10
20

I'm thinking that, if the idea of sXBL is to make it simple for the author
to include potentially complex content into a document, then as a general
rule the less exposure they have to script the better.

...meanwhile the code junkies are having more than their share of fun behind
the scenes!

What do you think?

suppose you have these custom elements, and a binding, that renders a

now suppose you have a few s in your document, and you want
the user to change the appearence of every single individualy.
in mozilla, you could use javascript to change the binding for each

this example: http://www.treebuilder.de/svg/xbl/pieChart.xml )
i wonder how i would do something like that in sXBL. maybe i miss
something in the spec though.

[svg-developers] VectorShapes

2013-08-01 Thread Peter Schonefeld
Hi All, It's been a long while since I posted here and great to see many
familiar names still active. I've built a new SVG based website aimed at
generating design elements for designers. http://vectorshapes.com

I wish the browser compatibility was greater at this time, but decided to
get the site 'out there' and work on browser issues progressively. So what
you see now is only 100% functional in Chrome.

Used the Dart programming language to build the site and am pretty wrapped
with the development experience provided by Dart with SVG. For any
interested i've also written a blog post about using dart
here
.

Any feedback will be greatly appreciated!

Kind Regards
Pete

[svg-developers] Re: color blend mode filter

2013-08-29 Thread Peter Schonefeld
Hi James,

The following might be a step in the right direction...

In summary, define your colorful shapes in the defs g element and then use
a combination of blend and composite ops to get the color like effect. The
alphaMask node helps bring the dark values back. If you need to retain the
colors of the original graphic you should be able to use a composite of the
#colorLayer's SourceAlpha to mask outside of the color shapes.

Would love to know if you find another way besides this!
