Re: [SWCollect] Multi-format floppy drive

2002-11-06 Thread Pedro Quaresma

I think I'm missing something simple here but... so with this new Multi
Format Floppy Drive you have hardware to read all the amiga/c64/whatever
floppies... but what about running the software itself?

Actually, you can now read Amiga disks on a regular PC, thanks to the
insane
work of an insane friend: http://www.oldskool.org/disk2fdi/

Qmodem, hands down. Interface and general responsiveness was much better than
Procomm for most of their lives. Procomm was the popular favorite, but I
always thought it was clunky.

All three, actually. :-) For exactly the reasons you listed. I also had fun
with some Chicago-area Apple II d-dials (remember those?) where I saw the
birth of "welp" and other countless online slang I don't care to repeat :-)

The HP 200LX is, literally, an 8086 crammed into a palmtop with a mini
keyboard. It runs at about 8MHz and handles CGA. Getting one for cheap is
unfortunately the hard part.

Otherwise, pretty much any old machine will do. To make life easier on
yourself, get any laptop with one or more build-in 3.5" drives (don't have to
be high-density) so that you can create bootable disks, transfer files, etc.
using any modern 3.5" drive.

Since I already have a cacophony of oldskool hardware and several Central
Point Option Boards, I'm not planning on getting one in the near future.
