This is unfortunately common and realistic case.
We had about 40 to 50 domain names in .ch and .li alone that where registered
to operate TorentLocker.
As the operators make a lot of money with ransomware, they can afford buying
domain names and hosting, even if they can use them only a few days.

You should inform the responsible CERTs, in Switzerland MELANI, the registry,
(for .ch and .li SWITCH c...@switch.ch) and the registrar if you are not a
registrar yourself.
Basicly to inform them about the malicious registrations and allow them to
detect similar cases.

Handing over the logs to a CERT for victim notification doesn’t make so much
sense in this case as victims will most likely notice that they are infected.

I think you should also contact KOBIK/FEDPOL and report the case as you are a
victim.
You should first ask them what data they need to investigate the case and then
make your decision on handing over the data.

Best regards

Michael

[swinog] DNSSEC Training with PowerDNS

2018-02-27 Thread Michael Hausding
Dear all

SWITCH is organising a one day DNSSEC training together with PowerDNS

The training will be given at the following dates:

9.4. Zurich, SWITCH
10.4. Bern, Uni
11.4. Carouge HESGE

The one day training will give you an introduction into DNSSEC and show you how
to sign DNS zones on an autoritative DNS server.
We will use PowerDNS for the practical and hands on part. PowerDNS contains
support for DNSSEC, enabling the easy serving of DNSSEC secured data, with
minimal administrative overhead.

Agenda:

• Short introduction to DNSSEC
• how DNSSEC works
• keys / signatures / NSEC / NSEC3
• Working with DNSSEC and the PowerDNS Authoritative server
• Short overview over PowerDNS Authoritative server backends (MySQL,
PostgreSQL, BIND, pipe, ...)
• DNSSEC signing
• Pre-signed zones
• Zone transfers
• Utilities (pdnsutil)
• The PowerDNS ALIAS record (and its future)

Required skills: Unix system administrator skills and DNS server know how.
The training will be delivered in english.

More information and registration here:

2018-02-28 Thread Michael Hausding
Hi all

The interest was quiet high, Zurich and Bern is already fully booked, only a
few places left for Carouge.

Good to see so much demand for DNSSEC :-)

We are looking to add another date in Zurich later in April or May.
Announcement will be made via mailing lists and twitter.

Re: [swinog] {Spam?} GDPR / DSGVO and 'whois' domain data

2018-07-02 Thread Michael Hausding
Hi Benoit

As far as I see, the common understanding of the GDPR of most registrars is
that they need to protect the personal data if the domain holder is a private
person.
If the domain holder is an organization, the holder and tech-c can be
published, but most registrars are paranoid because of the fines in the GDPR
and don’t publish anything.
ICANN sued one registrar (EPAG) for not publishing, but lost the initial court
case:

https://www.icann.org/resources/pages/litigation-icann-v-epag-2018-05-25-en

For .ch there is still the VID that requests the whois data to be published:

 Art. 46 Öffentlich zugängliche Daten

1 Folgende Angaben müssen in der WHOIS-Datenbank abrufbar sein:

a.
Bezeichnung des zugeteilten Domain-Namens und entsprechenden ACE-String;
b.1
Name und Postadresse der Halterin oder des Halters des betreffenden
Domain-Namens;
c.2
bei einem aktivierten Domain-Namen: die Daten der zugeteilten Namensserver;
d. und e.3
…
f.4
Name und Postadresse der technisch verantwortlichen Person;
g.
die Angabe, ob ein Domain-Name durch das DNSSEC-System gesichert ist;
h.
Datum der ersten Zuteilung des Domain-Namens;
i.
verhindern.
