Re: [Swlfest] First Impressions and Many Thanks

2024-05-14 Thread Eric A. Cottrell

Hello Y'all,

I think it went well even if it was not the first time.

I noticed occasionally there was a single person using the in-person
Hospitality Room to talk to people in the virtual hospitality room. But
it seemed like there were mostly two groups, the in-person group and the
virtual group. I also think that we should look at a more private space
for the in-person Hospitality Room, especially if we do a silent auction
or like activity.

The trinkets were a surprised and was in keeping with other Fests. An
April date will be better. I can swing both the Fest and Hamvention, but
others went virtual because of Hamvention.

The bands were lousy anyway so I did not really test things out. I was
able to pick up local MW stations in the meeting room for Dan's talk.

Well, the first of its kind combo in-person/ZOOM-virtual SWL “Winter” Fest is
in the books. Rich and I will be polling the attendees as well as those who
couldn’t attend but wanted to do so for their opinions, observations and
impressions. But in the interim, here’s some personal quick hits drawn from
the weekend.

1. The hotel Mr. Cuff scoped out (after he personally visited several) was an
excellent choice for this year’s event. Since this is a suites hotel, the
rooms were spacious even allowing for small gatherings if that was the wish of
the holder. It was comfortable, clean, had a much better than average buffet
breakfast (included in the price), excellent large video screens and reliable
high speed internet. The meeting room, though smaller than the prior hotels,
was perfectly adequate for the 40 or so participants in each session and,
according to postings in the room, could hold as many as 65, though perhaps not
as comfortably. In sum, the hotel was near perfect for a first-time, somewhat
feature reduced hybrid Fest event.

The operable question will be will this hotel or one similar to it be enough
for a future Fest that likely could add back in some of the features of past
Fests that were intentionally not included this time for sake of simplicity to
allow focus on the more vital technological factors.

Personally, I think it can. Given a range of factors including higher costs,
apparent lesser willingness or ability to travel and availability of virtual
attendance as an alternative, participation in an in-person Fest is very
unlikely to ever again approach the numbers realized over the first quarter
century of the event. The next one, if scheduled (and that looks right now
very likely) will be the 38th and numbers overall have been in a gradual
decline over at least the last 10, though certainly enough to more than justify
the event’s continuance.

Initial feedback has been positive, though there was some consternation
expressed about the inability of the hotel to accommodate antennas and the lack
of an in-house restaurant for meals other than breakfast. It was noted that
without the former, a “listening room” becomes impossible and some expressed a
desire for that feature to be reincorporated in the future.

Therefore, more consideration is warranted before committing to this hotel and
a format for the next Fest. Several seem to miss the swap meet, a few were
looking for the silent auction and a couple asked about a raffle. No options
are closed as of now.

2. Mr. Cuff did one hell of an excellent job piecing together, with the help
of Paul Kaltenbach and other electronically-savvy attendees, the technology
necessary to running this hybrid event. Bravo to him and all. It’s been
proven that a successful hybrid event can be done. While there were a few
hiccups, this was not unexpected and all were eventually addressed. This was
in essence a grand experiment that succeeded. Nonetheless, we are going to
want to hear from both “sides” — the in-person attendees and the ZOOM attendees
— about what worked and what didn’t for them.

3. Holding the two “sides” together was the Bob Brown Memorial Virtual
Hospitality Suite, manned throughout the event by the CIDX’s Sheldon, Gilles
and Mickey. I must confess I had little to no time to attend there myself,
much to my disappointment. But I know they were there throughout, linking
together the time between sessions for all who wanted it. Nonetheless, even
though I have no real experience of my own to relate, I do know we want to hear
from them and those who were “in the room” about what worked for them and what
didn’t, along with suggestions for next time, should the CIDX folks choose to
continue with their effort.

4. Comments I heard about the forums, the Shindig and the Dutch treat dinner
on Saturday were generally positive. The objective, as always, was to provide
a balanced set of topics led by knowledgable presenters. Because the venue was
new and the hybrid approach novel, it was decided to “back off” somewhat on the
scheduling to allow for breathing sp

Registration for the 2024 "Winter SWL Fest" is now available!

The Fest will be a combination in-person and Zoom event, and
will be held at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites in Fort
Washington, Pennsylvania - just north of Philadelphia.  We
have a block of rooms set aside for the Fest at a special
rate; this block will only be available until April 18th,
2024.  After that date our special rate may no longer be
available, and the hotel itself may sell out.

In-person registration is limited to 65 participants, so
register early if you don't want to get shut out; there is no
limit to the number of Zoom participants.

Start your process at the Winter SWL Fest website:

http://www.swlfest.com

You can find out more information there, and access the group
reservation link for the hotel and also register for either
the in-person or the Zoom event.

We apologize if you're seeing this announcement in multiple

We look forward to seeing you there!

Re: [Swlfest] Informal Poll of Past and Future SWL Fest Attendees

2024-01-20 Thread Eric A. Cottrell

Since the advent of COVID, we’re maintained an annual Fest by using the ZOOM
platform. This has proven popular and successful and will continue. However,
we have always considered a return to an “in-person” Fest something desirable
if at all possible. This year we decided to move the dates for the Fest to May
to address two potential weather-related roadblocks to doing so: ease of
travel and the likelihood that the potential for illness lowers as the weather
moderates.

This “unscientific” poll with help us determine the best course of action for
the “‘Winter’ SWL Fest” this year. We hope that everyone on these three
platforms interested in the Fest will participate in this poll. Just number
your answers according to the template below and e-mail them to both of us by
January 21 directly. We’ll let you know what we’ve learned immediately
thereafter.

Here are the 5 questions:

1. Yes or No. I would be willing to once again attend an in-person Fest.

Yes.

2. Yes or No. To demonstrate that willingness, I would be willing to make a
nonrefundable upfront payment of $50 to $100. This would ensure enough
participation to cover unavoidable fixed costs like a meeting room(s) and
electronic costs.
Yes.  Although the Festmeisters have endeavored to hold costs over the
years, I think it is slightly unreasonable to expect no increases after
four years.

3. Yes or No. Would a significant increase (say 25%) in costs (for travel,
lodging, food) to attend affect your decision?
No.   Unfortunately the Cost-of-Living (COL) increase is 19.1 percent
since we last held the fest in person.

4. Yes or No. Should ALL of the features of past Fests be retained? These
include: the Forums, the convention atmosphere by holding the event for two
days in a sizeable hotel, the Banquet, the Raffle, the Silent Auction, the
Swap Meet, the Hospitality Room.
Yes. All the components equal a great fest.  But, I am willing to scale
back things, like using a smaller venue due to lower in-person
attendance and what that may entail. One major component is the exchange
of information through talks and just hanging out. So the Hospitality
room is a major component, but if we have a smaller attendance it could
be scaled back and still exist.

5. If you answered “No” to #4, what features could be done without?

Please feel free to add any further comments you deem helpful.

Philly's Amtrak station is adjacent to Center City Philadelphia.
Not a cheap neighborhood by any means.

Commuter rail from that location does exist to areas where we have
held the Fest in the past, though not next door to the hotels
we've used.  Some Festers in years past took the commuter rail to
the nearest station and either took a taxi or finagled a ride with
friends.

Re: [Swlfest] Thank You All

2021-02-28 Thread Eric A. Cottrell

Hello,

Thanks to all for making this a great virtual fest!

The late session yesterday reminded me of the early one day fests, where
the attendees stayed in the hospitality suite to the early hours of the
morning. I would sleep a little later in the morning and drive home
pumped up with coffee. Even though some did not have a long drive home
this year, I missed some of the rituals of the homeward bound travel,
like the stop at the Morristown Dinner for lunch. There are other travel
traditions I missed, like the stop at Rein's on the way down. In a
normal year, I would need to get my car fixed quickly, or rent, to go
down to the Big Pencil. My brother is coming down today to help fix my car.

I learned about new stuff, like every fest. It is interesting to see
what others are doing, like using a O Cedar mop handle for support of a
loop. I immediately ordered one so I can build a more portable loop for
the next fest. I also found out about two premium receiver Facebook
groups from Dan Robinson. I have a couple of premium receivers that I
have brought to the listening lounge. I look forward to helping Dan next
year.

I think the talks about how to get into basic amateur radio are very
important. I got a great deal on a like new Super Antenna MP1DXMax. It
was returned to HRO by a new ham who could not make it work. Some items
were still in their original packaging. I wanted to buy one to play with
after hearing about it from ham friends and the review by OH8STN.

https://oh8stn.org/super-antenna-mpd1xmax/

It is a lot better to start in Ham Radio with a 100 watt radio and basic
antenna like Skip detailed. I plan to experiment with an antenna type
that Skip mentioned at my home station. Palomar Engineers has all kinds
of interesting antenna and RFI stuff. They have a lot of application
information on their website. This is the antenna I purchased to put up
in Spring.

https://palomar-engineers.com/catalog/Bullet-End-Fed-Antenna-System-71-Antenna-80-6-meters-50-Coax-and-Choke-FREE-Ship-500-Watt-PEP-p88106137

Thomas and other IC-705 users may want to look at the IC-705 Carry Cage
by Peovi Mounts.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ag9aH3USKl4

It was interesting to see the various radios. Several attendees fondly
remember the Panasonic RF-2200. I still have my very beat up one. I had
the Yaesu FRG-7700 for awhile instead of the FRG-7. I still have the
Sony ICF-2010, AOR 8600Mk2, Yaesu FT-817, Kinetics SBS-1, and several
other radios.

the “leave” button on ZOOM at around 1:30 this morning.

But the most prominent emotion is joy — joy at watching so very talented and
committed people talk to us in the forums about the things that excite them
about radio; joy at seeing people we have come to know as good friends in a
familiar place that sounds and feels like an annual reunion; joy in knowing
that I am with those for whom radio is as interwoven into their lives as it is

It was all there this time too, which proves it matters little how or where we

So I want to thank my good friend Rich for the smooth and seamless way he dove
into the ZOOM environment and made it work for us. I want to thank Sheldon for
his excellent suggestions along the way and for always finding a way to step

with this greatest of ideas and leaving us with a format and spirit that I now

Finally, I want to thank all of you for being such an important part of it all

[Swlfest] Olympia Lansing carry-on as a radio "go-bag"

2019-05-21 Thread Eric A. Cottrell

Hello,

I remember years ago Ed Muro talked about what he used for a "go-bag" at
the scanner forum. I am always on the look out for good bags for radio
stuff.

The other day at BJ's Wholesale I saw a small under-the-seat carry-on
bag on clearance for $25. I thought it might be a good "go-bag" for my
radio hobby and it is a good choice. There are plenty of pockets for
notebooks and small items. The two side pockets work well for handheld
radios and antennas. There is a padded laptop sleeve that will fit up to
a 14 inch laptop. My main 15 inch laptop will not fit, but I have a 14
inch laptop I use that will fit.

I use a smaller case to hold my SDRplay and I store it in the main
compartment. My Icom IC-R8600 will also fit with plenty of room, but it
could get damaged by the handle shaft going up the back center of the
case. There is a thin zippered cover, so it might be possible to put
foam behind the covering to pad the handle shaft.

Re: [Swlfest] Amateur radio at the fest

2019-02-26 Thread Eric A. Cottrell

Hello,

I am charging up the portables today and preparing for the Fest. I have
the UHF DMR simplex channels programmed as well as the NJ-TRBO
talkgroups in my XPR from last year. It was neat talking on TRI-STATE to
a ham on one of the New Jersey barrier islands while I was on the NJ
turnpike close to the PA turnpike exit.

An alternative to DMR Simplex is the Local Repeater talkgroup (Timeslot
1 Talkgroup 9) on the Roxborough repeater. This will allow local
communications and still free up the repeater for TRI-STATE on Timeslot 2.

As far as DMR...you could program in 441.000 MHz, TG 99, TS 1 CC1
and use simplex since you're all in the same place! That is one of
the recommended DMR simplex frequencies.
http://www.va3xpr.net/dmr-simplex-frequencies/

Tom, while I know that TG 31360 is the best for you because you
already have it programmed in, I'm not sure that all the folks who
use Tri State during their daily commutes would be too interested in
SWL Fest chat about Pancho and purple paper for 3 days typing up
"their" TG. But that is just my opinion.

I've setup a D-Star callsign routing group which Festers are free to
use. It is live now and it is called SWLFEST. If you are bringing
your Zumspot/Jumbospot etc it can already do callsign routing.
Replace the CQCQCQ that is usually in the UR Call field with
"SWLFEST" and it will just work. To terminate use "SWLFESTT". I'll
leave it up through the end of next week, but maybe it will stick
around if I see it getting some use. For more on Smart Routing
Groups see
http://www.k2dls.net/blog/2019/02/19/adventures-in-callsign-routing/.

We will not be able to join the Fest this year because of a conflict
with other interesting plans. But here's wishing for a good
gathering of the radio active from me and Tina.

The recent discussion on choosing a fest comm frequency--2m or

Please advise.

The wide-area N3KZ 70cm analog network is off the air, perhaps for
good. There has been ongoing nonsense--deliberate interference
caused by troublemakers--and the management pressed the red kill
button.

The PARA W3PHL network is probably the next largest linked analog
network. Look at http://para.buxcom.net and/or
https://www.repeaterbook.com for information.

For those on DMR, probably the Brandmeister talkgroup (TG) TriState
31360 --
https://wiki.brandmeister.network/index.php/TalkGroup/31360 --is
the most convenient for festees to use. The TrIState TG is on a
host of DMR repeaters. See http://www.wr3irs.com and
http://www.n2jti.net for repeaters, color codes and time slots. The
Philadelphia 440.650 repeater in Roxborough (near City Line Ave and
I-76) should easily provide coverage at the hotel.

If you are using a hotspot and a VZW Jetpack (or equivalent) in the
car or in a go-bag, then simply add 31360 to your codeplug.

Re: [Swlfest] Portuguese Pirates on UHF MilSats

2018-03-14 Thread Eric A. Cottrell

Hello,

I got my Mini-Circuit order today and wired up the ZX60-P103LN+ LNA to 5
volts. I hooked it up to the discone and fed it into the R8600. I can
now see the noise floor of the transponders! The amplitude scale on the
R8600 is fixed at 10 dB so it is not a tall plateau. I can see the
smaller data transponders as well. The LNA has a 0.5dB NF.

I tried my vertical Log-Periodic Antenna on the roof and noticed I could
also see the 255.550 MHz transponder noise floor with a higher signal
level when pointed to the SE. I can barely see it with no LNA.

I've managed to see the transponders with a discone (with good LOS

[Swlfest] Emergency Power and Lighting

2018-03-11 Thread Eric A. Cottrell

Hello,

The last Fest caused me to focus more on Emergency Power. The recent
storms continue to cause Power Outages. Maybe portable power will be the
subject of a talk next year?

My past focus was more toward operating radios disconnected from the AC
mains. I have a couple of flashlights at home to handle power outages. I
also have an old fluorescent light camp lantern for an area light. There
are a number of camping items that can be used for emergencies, like
small pop-up LED lanterns. I am thinking of getting a couple of small
pop-up LED lanterns that I could put in the suitcase and keep around for
emergencies.

I got a LED headlamp to put in the car and for fixing things in dark
places. They are more handy for nighttime tire changing than trying to
deal with a regular flashlight. I used to have an big maglite in my old
car and did not bother to get a flashlight for my new car until now. I
put a small LED flashlight in the glovebox and my suitcase.

USB seems to be a popular power connector for low wattage connections. I
carry an eight ampere-hour (8Ah) power bank with a USB connector in my
laptop bag. I used it during the Fest to recharge my phone's battery.
The power bank is recharged via USB. I also have a 5Ah one from the
Radio Shack liquidation.

Another camping item is a 40 watt LED bulb with a switch that connects
to USB. An 8Ah power bank should power the LED bulb from four to eight
hours. I also have an Aspect Solar Energybar 250 containing a 250Wh
(20Ah) battery, 4 USB ports, one 12V output, and one 110VAC outlet. The
Energybar can be recharged through an AC Adapter, DC Adapter, or Solar
Panel. Unfortunately Aspect Solar is out of business, but other
companies make similar devices. Anker is introducing the Powerhouse 200
with a 200 Wh battery this summer.

So I am planning on updating my emergency lighting and putting the
Energybar in the trunk when I travel. I will likely not face another
power blackout at a hotel again, but it is best to be prepared.

[Swlfest] Great Fest this year

2017-03-06 Thread Eric A. Cottrell

Hello,

Even though I got sick over the weekend, this was one of the best Fests
that I attended. Fortunately I was able to minimize the ill effects and
have a great time. Thanks to everyone who helped make this a great Fest.

Route 202 turned out to be a good route and I am considering using it
more in future. The rush hour traffic on the PA turnpike westbound can
be bad. Any heavy traffic on Route 202 was going the other way. I took
the same route going home so I could lunch at the Morristown Diner in
Morristown, NJ.

The listening lounge was successful due to four people providing radios
and additional antennas. It was too bad that propagation was poor
Friday. It improved Saturday. I may bring my Fairhaven RD500DX next
year, unless I buy another radio.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CS35l2Rqs5g

It was interesting comparing the different generations of NRC and Racal
Receivers. I always wanted to see a Icom R-9500 in person. The small
Mason Engineering Mini-Probe TSCM receiver was very interesting. I was
not familiar with the company.

http://cryptomuseum.com/manuf/mason/index.htm

There were many talks I found interesting and with good information.
Some talks had subjects beyond the typical radio listening. I missed a
couple that I wanted to attend.

It was good to meet up with people from previous years and remember
those who are no longer with us.

It is amazing comparing the technology we could buy in 1988 with today.
Some of the top end receivers of the 1980s, like the Racal 6790/GM, are
still good performers at a more reasonable price today. At past Fests I
usually struggled to find time to monitor the local VHF/UHF/800 bands.
This fest I had a laptop with a 2TB SSD and a SDRPlay RSP2Pro to record
several minutes of up to 8 MHz swaths of radio spectrum. I can review
the files anytime. They also make good test input to the various decoder
projects I am working on.

If you want to read some long threads on the little experiment I started
back in August.

Hello,

There is usually an open connector or two on the distribution amplifier.
I doubt we could string cables outside the hospitality room to other

[Swlfest] Listening Lounge Feedback and Logs

2016-02-22 Thread Eric A. Cottrell

Hello,

I am looking for feedback about the Listening Lounge. I am also
interested in what stations you were able to receive.

I may print out some basic instructions so people can sit down and
operate the radios better. Headphones may be useful to cut down
background noise.

The Wellbrook signal output is 'hot'. I have problems with several
nearby AM stations overloading some receivers. The situation is similar
at the Fest site with AM station towers a short distance away. I use a
MW Band-Reject Filter, which also worked at the Fest site. The noise
level seemed reasonable. I did not try for any DX, but there did seem to
be a good selection of stations on. There was Caribbean Beacon, a couple
of religious stations, and a couple of South Americans. In the Evening
there were a several stations on the 60M Band.

[Swlfest] Scanning Beyond The Scum

2016-02-17 Thread Eric A. Cottrell

Hello,

I do not mean any disrespect to the regulars who do the Scanner Forum,
but I just love the title of my presentation "Scanning Beyond the Scum".
It reminds me of the titles used for the sequels to 1970s disaster movies.

I appreciate the opportunity and hope to present a forum that meets Scum
standards. Being in many aspects of the radio hobby since the 1970s,
there were many topics I could present. Discussing changes of the past
year was a given.

As I worked on my presentation over the past weeks, it grew to add a
discussion about information sources that I regularly use for listening
above 30 MHz. There were paper guides, like Police Call and the
Scannermaster Guides, in the old days. Now there are mailing lists,
message forums, and various websites. Scanning above 30 MHz is mostly a
local activity, and what a person can hear depends on the radio and the
location. I like to explore the radio spectrum and see what is around me.

Looking forward to a great fest.

Re: [Swlfest] Arrived home already!

2015-03-01 Thread Eric A. Cottrell

Hello,

I got home about 5PM. There must be some truth about antennas performing
better when put up in rain or snow storms as I am listening to Morocco
on 171 KHz using the WJ-8711A and the Wellbrook loop. Currently snowing
and another 3 to 6 inches expected by tomorrow noon.

Unfortunately I stayed up late and the sun, that awakened me at 6:50 AM
the past two mornings, was a no show. So I got on the road a little
later than planned. No snow until just before the lunch stop in Norwalk,
CT. The snow was very light and turned to light as travel progressed
along Route 15. The slowest part was around New Haven as it looked like
it snowed lightly for longer and the road was slippery. Conditions
improved on I-84 in NE CT, but there were still icy spots underneath
overpasses. The Mass Pike and the Boston area was good as the light snow
had just started.

From what I heard from later travel information, it got worse in NY and
CT several hours after I drove through, so I am glad to be home. Thanks
again for a wonderful fest. I hope everyone gets home safely.

[Swlfest] Listening Lounge and Internet Access

2015-01-15 Thread Eric A. Cottrell

Hello,

Dan Robinson and I am planning on bringing a couple of premium receivers
and a distribution amplifier. I am also planning on bringing a Wellbrook
Loop that did very well on Shortwave at the last Fest. I may bring some
other short antennas to try out.

I am plan on bringing the Cradlepoint Router to provide Internet Access
via WI-FI for the Meeting Room area. I have both Clear and Verizon
access. Clear is preferred, since their 4G is unlimited, but usage has
not been excessive in the past.

[Swlfest] Thanks for a great Fest

2014-03-17 Thread Eric A. Cottrell

Hello,

Once again a great Fest!

I delayed the trip down to get better weather and ended up only getting
caught in a few traffic delays. I had a late dinner at The Persian
Grille. The Chicken Fesenjan was great.

My room was on the fifth floor and I managed to get exercise over the
weekend by mostly using the stairs. The hospitality suite was on the
sixth floor so it was an easier walk. I liked the hospitality setup.
There were two interesting HF receivers thanks to Dan Robinson. I got to
tune in stations from India, CFRX 6070, etc. I tried for some LW
stations at night, but did not hear anything.

I recently bought a used Wellbrook ALA1530 loop. I brought it to the
Fest to try out. It worked okay in my room and up in the hospitality
suite. I am thinking of experimenting with some loops after hearing Jef
Eichner's talk. I might bring a HF receiver and a loop for the
hospitality suite next year. I should have setup my Wellbrook in the
hospitality suite sooner.

I found the talks on North Korea very interesting. Thanks for hosting
the talks.

http://www.nknews.org/2014/03/behind-north-koreas-propaganda-curtain/

I managed to do some listening above HF and found some interesting
digital radio systems. I used an Icom R2500 with a laptop running dsd. I
also used a Winradio G305e to do some recording of signals. The Winradio
also works good for DRM on HF.

It seemed quieter with several of my friends not able to attend, but
still not enough time to do everything.

All too soon there was the banquet, the Pancho Villa broadcast, and time
to head home. It was a nice relaxing trip home.

Already looking forward to next year.

Re: [Swlfest] Hospitality Room will not have alcohol this year...

2013-02-27 Thread Eric A. Cottrell

Hello,

And just as I had a 2-1/2 year alcohol restriction lifted...

Actually I do not drink that much alcohol anyway, so it does not matter
either way.

Thanks for the information as I was going to contribute fruit juice
boxes for the hospitality suite as usual. I will just bring some for my
own use.

Hi Ed -

The only thing we can't do is "serve" our own alcohol as part of the
Fest. I know of no restrictions regarding individual guests.

Rich, thanks for the heads-up on the new dictatorial culinary regime.

I've seen other hotels pull this scam with other conference groups I've been
involved with. After the conference establishes a hotel as a repeat venue
and everyone is comfortable with there, the hotel starts turning the screws
and nickle & dimeing the group for everything conceivable without fair
warning.

So what, exactly, are the new rules the hotel is imposing on 'fest
guests--as opposed to NASWA the organization?

Will 'fest guests be permitted to bring their own foods & beverages (incl
beer, etc) into the Hospitality Room and into the Atrium?

Is there a quantity limit to how much food & beverages each 'fest guest can
bring into the Hospitality Room or into the Atrium?

Is there a prohibition on 'fest guests sharing their own foods & beverages
with other 'fest guests in the Hospitality Room or the Atrium?

Please advise, and thanks much.

FYI...the hotel is requiring us to use their operations for 100% of
our food & beverage needs this year.

Their costs for beer are much higher than what we would pay for it, so
we opted to keep somewhat of a lid on registration costs by
eliminating the cost of alcohol from our purchases.

Their costs for snacks & soda are higher as well...but manageable...
we'll have a "kitty" set up in the hospitality room if you feel led to
specifically donate to hospitality costs. Of course, you could also
just by a few more raffle tickets...

As for buying beer in the neighborhood of the Fest, remember that
Pennsylvania's alcohol laws are odd -- you can't buy beer or wine at
your local supermarket.

Here are some options:

Beer -

The Whole Foods Market across the road sells beer.

The Bottle Shop, attached to Capone's Restaurant, is at 224 West
Germantown Pike, Norristown - about 4 miles northwest of the hotel.
Has a reputation of a nice microbrew selection. Open until 1 AM
Thurs, 2 AM Fridays & Saturdays. You can buy up to two six-packs each
trip.

If you want case quantities in PA, shop at a beer distributor.
Closest to the Fest is San Beverage, 200 West Ridge Pike,
Conshohocken. They're probably open as late as 9 PM or so.

Wine & Spirits -

For wine & distilled spirits, you need a "Wine & Spirits" store, part
of our wonderful state-owned system. Nearest one to Fest is at 2927
Swede Road, Norristown. It's one of the "Premium Collection"
locations, and will probably be open until 10 PM.

Perhaps some of our more local folks can chime in here...

See you (egad!) in a day or so!
